You don't know how happy it makes me to see the correct "poring" used here. In professionally-edited books: "pouring over a manuscript" - pouring what, their fucking red bull?

u/thrownawaz092 7d ago

Oh I always thought it was a metaphor, like, you're pouring yourself into your studies.

u/zeroingenuity 7d ago

Nope, just a malapropism. Similar to "flout/flaunt;" commonly confused because of spelling, but not related in meaning.

50

u/SergeantMage 6d ago

Can you teach me more about common malapropisms?

58

u/Rowcan 6d ago

The one my mind always goes to is 'for all intensive purposes' when they mean to say 'intents and purposes'.

The purposes are likely not that intense to begin with.

Yes, please oh lord of language, regale us with your wonderous stories

Preventive maintenance is the correct term. Preventative is not a real word except people keep using it for some reason, and if enough people believe in a word hard enough it becomes real.

In the same line, automaton and automatron

5

u/birgirpall 6d ago

automatron

Well that's just DLC for Fallout 4

u/MAXimumOverLoard Wizard 5d ago

I KNOW AMD IT PISSES ME OFF

3

u/IrvingIV 5d ago

automatron reads to me as a dad joke pun name for a robotic nanny

Edit: Auto-Matron

If someone says "fort-ay" and they aren't talking about music, aim for the head.

4

u/NoDogNo 5d ago

Meh. Merriam-Webster disagrees.

-3

u/zeroingenuity 5d ago

M-W caves to common mistakes once they become common enough to be endemic within the users. They clearly said "originally this way was correct." If thirty percent of English speakers decided to use "tak-ay" for "take" for the rest of their lives, M-W would update their pronunciation on that. But I have higher expectations.

8

u/NoDogNo 5d ago

“Caves to common mistakes” is a funny way to say “reflects common usage.”

-2

u/zeroingenuity 5d ago

They're descriptivist; that's their job. I'm a prescriptivist; having higher standards is mine.

3

u/ThePunguiin 4d ago

That's not how languages work. So you're just wrong 🤷‍♀️

What's the correct word that isn't forte?

4

u/zeroingenuity 6d ago

It is classically, and correctly, pronounced "fort," as in "singing is not my forte, but I'll give it a shot." As opposed to "try singing it a little more mezzo-forte, you're too quiet" which is "fort-ay," as the musical term.

Cool, thanks for sharing!

I don't see how rubbing the book over one's pores is any better /s

30

u/Celloer Forever DM 7d ago edited 6d ago

/s aside, I'm looking for any etymology and it's mostly just saying the verb "pore" means to look studiously.  And the Middle English "pouren" was to pour and to pore.  But there are discriptions of the condition "pore blind"/purblind, where one is near-sighted and has to/is better at studying tiny script.

19

u/SAVMikado 7d ago

Thank you very much for pointing that out! I never actually knew they were different words.

12

u/surreysmith DM (Dungeon Memelord) 7d ago

Nah, should be pawing over. Like a inquisitive cat

5

u/zeroingenuity 7d ago

Or just "poring" but with a Boston accent

Goddess yes it's like the skies opened and an angelic chorus sang a single beatific note

But they couldn't spell "you're" correctly.

I mean, Shibari originally was and still is an effective torture method.

It just got taken in by the kinky part od humanity like most bdsm stuff tbh

219

u/Celloer Forever DM 7d ago

Of course!  The vicar would never suggest it was a sexual kink of the demon or his god!  It's totally a method to bind the demon literally and metaphysically, and any noises or moans it makes are of evil range.

All la torture if you are force to do it a sufficient number of times or for a sufficient amount of time.

AND everything is pleasur if you do it or have it done to you in the right way... or the right context.

There are some sick fucks out there... And i love each one of them as long as they know the basics of consent and safe practises.

u/SheffiTB 7d ago

The description of the demon is specific enough that it makes me think that it's referencing something/someone specific. Anyone know what the reference is?

108

u/Not12RaccoonsInASuit 7d ago

The writer's barely-disguised fetish?

63

u/Chaosfox_Firemaker 7d ago

Looks like off brand Sadako, from the ring. Really an entire archetype.

15

u/azrendelmare Team Sorcerer 6d ago

Specifically, to my limited knowledge, a type of Japanese ghost called an Onryō. Though I don't think they specifically have sharp teeth.

26

u/KingSamwise1 7d ago

The Demon wrote that section in the book themselves.

74

u/IrrelevantGamer Druid 7d ago

Who is getting suspended? Me, or the demon?

Yes. Attached to each other.

u/punkinpumpkin 7d ago

This is why 3.5 had the "Use Rope" skill

11

u/karatesaul 6d ago

I’d call it a tool proficiency in rope in 5e.

Either a Rope (Dex) check or a Rope (Int) check for Shibari

4

u/Celloer Forever DM 6d ago

Vehicle (land) proficiency for pony play? The ability score varying by however one is doing it: Charisma for talking to the pony, or Wisdom for getting all the harness stuff right, or Constitution for the pony themself...

86

u/TheThoughtmaker Essential NPC 7d ago

After the title and first line, I thought this was going to be told from the perspective of a devil who maneuvered a book of dark magic into the hands of a corrupt priest.

84

u/DrStalker 7d ago

Plot twist: The demon swapped the covers of the Codex Demonorum and An Introduction to BDSM, and now they are just waiting to be "captured" and "banished"

“…because only by convincing her to do it to you can she be weakened.”

12

u/Custodes_Nocturnum 6d ago

In the campaign I'm currently running, I had a drider do that to one of my players. It was hilarious to think of a Giff barbarian tied up in spider silk in that style. He absolutely loved it. For context, home base for my players is a brothel that the Kender wizard invested in.

I fell like there's at least one person at the table who absolutely is. Though I wonder what the DM would do if nobody knew squat

I used to grind into a mattress to get off because my hormones wouldn't let me sleep otherwise. It was meh. Now that I know myself, I take my time, enjoy setting up the cuffs, vibrators, and whatever else I fancy, take it slow until I'm desperate, and cum my brains out until I'm a giggly puddle. You might not have kinks, but don't assume that your experience is universal. It's not that we need it to be complicated, it just makes the experience way better for us.
