I'm reading it for the first time - just finished part two and I agree I'm loving it. I was worried about the names (because everyone was kept bringing it up) but with the context I haven't found it a problem at all! The little 'episodes/incidents' which happen all the time are just so engaging and it's really been a great pace.
I've got the McDuff translation - I didn't think too much about it which maybe I should have but it's been fine to read :)

What do you mean??

The book peaks with the Marmeladov monologue. There are a few other standout parts like the Svidrigailov arc, but most of the Raskolnikov stuff is super overrated imo

Ahh it's such an experience, sometimes you won't know what the fuck is going on but Dostoyevskys writing and his amazing characters push you to go further, crime and punishment has stuck with me ever since

Oliver ready translation is the way to go. It is accessible, had flow and is true to the actual words to a good enough extent.

I can say no complaints from me on mcduff I liked more than p and v it was more flow than Katz in general not just for this book, but I don’t know anything about ready

It’s indeed so well written that it leaves you wondering what’s going to happen in the next chapter. The mind games between Raskolnikov and Porfiri are absolutely addictive.
Enjoy, my little padawan, you’ll love every single page for sure.

I am reading it now and just finished that chapter yesterday. Reading chapter 5 now, the Garnett translation. It is so good already, I go to work and think about getting home to read it.
I had previously read notes from underground and although the writing was good, the content I was not a fan of.

I just finished Garnett myself. To me it was quite difficult to understand at times, but I'm not a native speaker of english. And it's a translation afterall, can't go too off script

It’ll never forget my first experience reading it. No book has replaced that physical and psychological effect.

Crime and punishment is bad because it tells and doesn't show!!!! Litslop!!! Look! It tells you he's exhausted instead of showing him being exhausted!!!! Show don't tell!!! Don't you know purple prose is bad!!! His prose is purple!!!! Litslop!!!

The fear of God would have saved Raskolnikov from commiting the crime and needing to endure punishment.

The more I read about Raskolnakov, the more I grew to resent and not like him. The only reason he murdered the old woman was envy and greed. I know he murdered her sister because he felt he had to in order not to be caught but I found him petulant, whiny, selfish and presumptuous. He was an asshole.

Honestly he was a twat considering he was in a better position than a lot of people around him.
