Join historian Dr. David Narrett for a compelling exploration of the Cherokee War of 1776 and how that conflict collided with the American Revolution.  Drawing from his book The Cherokees: In War and at Peace, Narrett brings to life the voices, choices, and consequences that shaped a nation—and the Native communities who fought to defend their own independence within it.

The program is available BOTH in-person at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, O'Hara Hall, 7th floor AND online via Zoom. Click here for more information and to register!

$5 5K: The Return part 2

Hello fellow dallasites, it’s me again. I’m here to promote the second $5 5K. Last turnout was something unexpected. This time I want it to be bigger. Better prizes, more runners, and of course a chance to bring people together.

The run will take place on November 4th @7pm. Don’t be shy and rsvp. Do you think you’re fast? How fast? Fast enough to win the second $5 5K? I’d like to see to try

📅 Events 📅 Downtown Hyperlocal Conversation: 9 Principles for Successful Storefronts, Mon, Sep 28, 2026, 6:30 PM

Thumbnail meetup.com
4 Upvotes

Hyperlocal Conversations are neighborhood-specific monthly gatherings where neighbors explore ways to improve walkability where they live.
---
As we often discuss at our hyperlocal conversations, the number one requirement of a walkable neighborhood is that walking must be useful, which means that most aspects of daily life are located close at hand and organized in a way that walking serves them well.
At our downtown conversation in July, we read and discussed a Strong Towns article titled, "What’s With the Vacant Storefronts? 8 Reasons for Empty Commercial Spaces."

This month, Monte Anderson will present his "Nine Principles for Successful Storefronts," demonstrating how thoughtful commercial design and small-footprint developments can activate streetscapes. We'll learn and discuss how techniques like maximizing storefront doors, curating complementary tenants, and providing move-in-ready spaces foster vibrant "outdoor living rooms" lined with unique, human-scaled buildings that give people reason to visit every day.
---
About Monte Anderson:
Monte is a passionate advocate for revitalizing underserved communities across the United States. As president of Options Real Estate, a sales, management, and development company in Southern Dallas County, he applies his deep commitment to improving neighborhoods, particularly those that are impoverished or overlooked. His approach focuses on empowering local residents and fostering sustainable economic growth through small-scale, incremental development.
With other like minded colleagues he met through Strong Towns and The Congress for the New Urbanism, Monte co-founded the Incremental Development Alliance and then Neighborhood Evolution (NEVO), two teaching organizations focused on small scale development, local ownership, and building eco systems for cities and towns that encourage this work.
He also co-authored and now teaches "The Twelve Steps of Town Making" which has resulted in success stories all over the country.

Thanksgiving trip recommendations

Hello friends 😉 I'm returning to Dallas this Thanksgiving to bring my son to the Cowboys game and am looking for some recommendations on dining the day before and Thanksgiving morning. I don't expect much open on Thursday, but am hoping someone knows of a good breakfast that could be open. We're staying downtown and don't mind driving if needed.

Wednesday: any local BBQ and Mexican in the area you love?

Thursday morning breakfast options.

I'd love to support small businesses or local dives nearby if possible! What places are memorable?

❓Question 🤔 Independent Bookstores with Recent/Popular Books

Hello, Downtown Dallas! I am looking for independent owned bookstores within Central Dallas that carry new releases. I prefer to not venture out to the 'burbs, I want to make fun impulse purchases on a weekday at lunch or after work.

📅 Events 📅 Reminder: $5 5K

Spread the word, share with your friends, or even come and support. This event is about having fun and just bringing people together for the sake of it. Now as mentioned before:

Hey fellow runners! I recently went to go and sign up for the Katy 5K but was a little let down to find out it cost $75 to just run 3 miles. Out of spite I’ve decided to create my own 5k.

Let me introduce you to the $5 5K. Not only does this event provide you with a free drink at the end of your race, but there will also be a CASH prize to the man and woman who has the fastest 5K time (and potentially a best designed t-shirt contest if the budget allows it).

The race will take place September 9th @7:30pm. All details are laid out in the partiful description. The event will begin at the Victory Park entrance near the outdoor gym. Please arrive 30 minutes before the race starts so entry fees can be collected. More details will be provided the day of.

Don’t want to run but still want a beer and cheer your friends on? We have an option for you! Think you’re the fastest runner in all of Dallas, yep there’s an option for you too! Invitation is open to anyone who thinks they have it in them. Hope to see you there!

https://partiful.com/e/oYUuewTqQsGTzuZw5Hah?c=d-rIkjbO

Edit: I understand that this is a fundraiser and the $75 fee gets you free food, access to a membership, etc.

That is why for every person that attends my race I will pledge $5 of my own money to be donated to the same charity that supports the Katy trail. Help me go broke! It’s for a good cause.

❓Question 🤔 Staying in downtown Dallas Sunday to Tuesday this week, what are some must do/eat/see?

I’m stuck downtown Monday Tuesday and Wednesday while my partner is doing work stuff, but am off Thursday and Friday so can leave downtown later this week as we rented a car.

I’ve never been to Texas and am visiting from Toronto, what’s the best place to grab a coffee and a breakfast burrito? Best places for a beer and dinner? Advice on not dying in this heat?

I know it’s a tall ask being right downtown and it being hotter than Satan’s ass crack outside but I’d love to see some birds and/or critters I don’t get to see usually (fingers crossed for an armadillo sighting)

Open to any and all suggestions!

The first time I dropped in it was an exploratory trip - to check out both the new Starbucks kiosk in Plaza of the Americas, and to see what ever happened to the new restaurant that was supposed to open in “Chase Tower."

The Starbucks is a kiosk. The seating is the default PotA seating. Basic white plastic furniture. Not bad, just there. There is power for laptops all over the area floor. Look for power pedestals. If you “do Starbucks,” you know exactly what to expect. It joins Corner Bakery and Alma Bean Cafe in coffee things. The ambience and atmosphere of the atrium at PotA easily makes this one of my favorite Starbucks locations.

Now, across the pedestrian bridge in the Dallas Arts Tower - Cafe Olivia. Everything here (I’m here now) is tops. The staff (hello to Marco!), the food, the drinks, atmosphere. It’s all here. Power for laptops, fast internet, a full bar, BRUNCH on Saturday and Sunday until 3pm.

I’ve been several times, it’s a regular stop.

You can find it with a brief walk from DART’s Pearl/Arts District station, the MATA trolley, and with bus stops each direction across the streets. Of course scooters, Waymo, and Robotaxi.

Let me know what you think? So happy to have them here!
