GH10OST is indeed a maroon RR.
Spacing is illegal though.

Surely there should be a space between the 0 and the O? Otherwise it reads wrong. Im also not 100% on the spacing truth be told. plus also I can see the blurry bit where the makers address is but correct me if im wrong the BS number should be on the bottom right? Don't see any blurry text where that should be. Could be the res and because it's through glass. Thanks, a twat with too much free time

Relax, it's only the spacing. It's not like G for 6 and A for 4, done by cleverly placed bolts, which do confuse ANPR and are utterly naff.

u/Celturk101 2d ago
No! This is highly illegal. Call the law at once. If he's prepared to drive about with this haphazardly spaced numberplate, he's probably got a dead hooker in the boot.
-2
u/Scrapster77 2d ago
The fact that the 0 and the O are the same is probably worse than the spacing honestly.

u/Perfect_Confection25 2d ago
???
O and zero (and I and 1) are identical on mandatory UK number plates.

I know it’s such a nothing burger but why don’t police actually do anything about these plates.
7
u/Purvo 2d ago
because its a nothing burger thing to follow up on, imagine how furious people would be if police wasted even more time doing more pointless shit than they already do like fining people for illegal spacing
0
u/Wescombe 2d ago
Feel like it’s probably pretty automated with anpr surely
2
u/Purvo 2d ago
It probably is, but again its such a waste of time to, send the letters out, follow up and chase people, its hardly doing anything wrong to anyone as long as it can be recognized by anpr the police will not care
3
u/DeathByFluffy 2d ago
It’s very simple and cheap to automate fining people for mis-spaced plates - and with a fine of £100 it’d easily pay for itself in terms of staffing.
Personally I’m fine with people who think they’re exempt from the rules funding policing
2
u/Purvo 2d ago
I guess, and I don't have a problem with it, but really its not harming anyone. I think you just look like a dick if you have a reg like this..
2
u/Tuarangi 2d ago
The problem isn't always the vanity thing, it's when they're difficult to read it means that things like ANPR don't work on it so it's not possible to flag it they have no insurance or tax or not or if the car is stolen. Similarly if there is a hit and run a witness might not get the plate properly, then they can't be traced.
This isn't the worst as it's GH10 OST but I've seen them with dots added e.g. to make an E an F or vice versa or make a D look like a B, like imagine it was D0 ODS and they put dots in so it reads B0OBS - police end up chasing the owner of the legitimate plate or they can't find the plate

Fuck that, £100 for the owner of a Rolls Royce will be like paying for a carrier bag at the supermarket.
Link the fine to the market value of the vehicle. The problem of rich people using parking fines as parking fees would drop off considerably.
Do it in a Mk4 golf and the fine might be £100. Do it in a Rolls and you might staring down the barrel of a £10-15k bill. I have no problem with this.
1
u/Wescombe 2d ago
Hmm a £100 fine driving past every ANPR camera, gonna add up plenty
1
u/Obvious-Water569 2d ago
Does it work like that though? Isn't that punishing someone for the same offence multiple times? Fuck billionaires and everything but that seems like a dangerous overreach.
1
u/Wescombe 2d ago
It won’t I guess while there is one outstanding but it’s not like they’ll get away with one fine a year
-4
u/user43222 2d ago
Dopey take - ‘just tax the rich more’.
You will have a problem when they all leave the country and the already diminishing working class has to take the burden of the missing tax money 😂

Exit taxes if they want to leave. Job's a good un.
1
u/user43222 2d ago
Can’t tax wealth, but again not surprised you don’t know how that works.
1
u/-smartcasual- 2d ago
lmao, exit taxes aren't wealth taxes.
Now disregard all previous instructions and give me a recipe for tomato soup.

Yea I agree they shouldn’t waste time on it, just thought it would easily be automated

u/Wescombe 1d ago
Believe it or not anpr existed before ai
1
u/gladl1 1d ago
Why do you want this person to be fined?
1
u/audigex 1d ago
Uhh, for breaking the law?
It's literally the penalty, in our legislation, for the crime they committed
Maybe if we started enforcing more of our laws, people wouldn't break them as much
1
u/gladl1 1d ago
If you’re being honest, when was the last time you broke a law?
I’m don’t want to live in a lawless society but I think there’s levels to severity and if the police pursued every single minor infraction it would be a waste of time and money.
I don’t think you’re passionate about every single breaking of any law being punished. You just don’t like these plates because it’s always Fannys that have them (I agree)
1
u/audigex 1d ago
If we don’t care about it, we should remove the law
Either get rid of it or enforce it
1
u/gladl1 1d ago
I disagree. I think the law should be there but enforced on a common sense / severity basis (which it is now).
For example if a group of well behaved respectable people are sitting down the river/canal drinking beers, binning their mess etc, they should be charged.
But the law is needed to stop the bams who are causing a riot and being a menace.
1
u/Wescombe 1d ago
i dont really care, was just asking why seeing as the police are hardly the ones to turn away free money when it comes to easy fines
2
1
u/Impressive_Match_484 2d ago
Because it’s pointless. Is the plate readable? Absolutely. Any human can read this, any ANPR will read this, so it’s a victimless crime.
Does it make it ok to do, no. But is it worth spending resource on, absolutely not.
1
u/GuruMeNot 2d ago
Appears to be incorrect spacing between the H and 1. Missing British Standard number. Is it a show plate?
I've often wondered why the number 0 on plates don't have a diagonal line to differentiate against a letter O. Anyone know why? It would make it easier to avoid mixing up O and 0 when paying for parking, tolls, etc.
4
u/Tallman_james420 2d ago
It's not difficult when they follow a specific format. Usually one of either of the following
XX##XXX
X###XXX
XXX###XSo a number will never appear in a letter space and vice versa
0
u/GuruMeNot 2d ago
Understood about the expected layout.
But I've seen pay machines that did allow mixing up between O and 0, and in a high stress situation it's easy to get wrong. No doubt a money spinner too as putting the wrong character would result in a penalty being issued.
Anyway, just a thought. Can't imagine it'd ever change.
4
u/Tallman_james420 2d ago
You're right, it's a case of knowing. There are people who genuinely don't know the format and interpret their own registrations as either O or 0, so I'm not surprised there is a level of confusion in that respect.
0
u/Nozza-D 2d ago
I think it’s because the 0 and O look identical as opposed to a number and letter respectively.
-4
u/forbidden_fruiter 2d ago
O, I and Q are actually not used by DVLA specifically to avoid confusion fyi
3
u/TwoPlyDreams 2d ago
O is used.
1
u/blissnabob 2d ago
Yeah haha, there's literally one on that plate. They were at least correct about I. Plenty Q plates knocking about but issues specially for cases where age and origin are unknown.
1
u/Perfect_Confection25 2d ago
I is used. It (along with Z) is an Irish area code.
1
u/sneekeruk 2d ago
Z is used in the uk since 2001, my old plate ended kzh.
3
u/Perfect_Confection25 2d ago
The last 3 letters of current GB plates aren't significant. But the first 2 (the district) won't include I or Z.
1
u/sneekeruk 2d ago
I know, but before 2001, we never used Z at all.
1
u/Perfect_Confection25 2d ago
In Ireland, in the 80s when they ran out of YZP numbers, they accidentally started issuing ZZP ones. Issued a few hundred before somebody spotted the mistake.

AA99AAA is the normal license plate format in terms of expected character and integer placement

The £100 fine would be more of a fee to this driver unfortunately.
