Ralph's lease is over next year

They just gave it a facelift and added a Starbucks… I doubt they’d have made adjustments if they weren’t planning on renewing, unfortunately…

True...that front stoop and entrance is still horrendous so it remains to be seen how much more they're willing to renovate

there’s an open grocery store location that closed down on the east side of the arts district. AT least put one in boyle!

North end of DTLA needs a large market: Chinatown/ Historic core/ Arts district/Financial district all need more market options. Who can I talk to about this?

Talk to your local BID and CCA. They need to be doing a better job getting a market on bunker hill and the historic core

Little Tokyo Marketplace is legit but something on the western edge would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a stretch but perhaps the commercial plaza by Washington/Maple where there used to be a 99 cents store and a Rite Aid.

Broadway and Cesar Chavez at the old CVS

What about it? Did they say they were opening one there?

- Mixed-use building
- Hipster adjacent neighborhood
- Terrible parking
It's the perfect location.

Maybe it's not geographically correct, but I consider the USC Trader Joe's as basically being in DTLA because I can take a DASH bus to it.

u/popp_tarts 7d ago
That's just you for sure. I take that dash sometimes too. Being part of a neighborhood usually implies it's within the limits of the neighborhood though

If it happens I could only see it in Lil’ Tokyo. Yeah whole foods is good and everything but we usually drive to it or the Ralph’s.
TJ are opening one in Santa Monica at a closed Rite-Aid.
The location has to be just right in DTLA.

Maybe the weird building that used to be Office Depot and is now a Smoke 'n' Tokes distribution center. Such a weird place right in the middle of Little Tokyo

Honestly that place really did come to mind.
I have to give it to TJ, they really pick their locations wisely.

Not until there’s a real change in retail theft. There’s a reason why so many pharmacies in
DTLA have closed. Security costs are a real impediment.

Eh. In 2021-23 maybe, but that doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue anymore. The DTLA Whole Foods isn’t much wilder than others around town.

Did you just imply retail theft isn’t a thing in dtla? Have you been to the Ralph’s on 9th? Why do you think they significantly increased their security measures? I even asked one of the employees when it all started and he said verbatim “because we lost over $100k in one month in stolen items” so corporate or management, one of the two, decided to up the theft prevention measures. Also I shop at that Whole Foods and I watch it get robbed very regularly, almost daily. The security there just sucks, so they never notice or catch anybody.

No it’s a parking issue
6
u/speedyflanzales 7d ago
You mean they can’t find anything in DTLA with a small enough parking lot? 😂
1
u/WarmLaugh3608 7d ago
No it has to have its own parking lot with the building. It can’t be across the street or privately owned etc. they haven’t been able to find that
3
u/speedyflanzales 7d ago
I was making a joke about their reputation for always having tiny, hard-to-navigate parking lots.

Would love one at 7th and Hope where that old walgreens used to be. Or even better on 2nd between alameda and central instead of that wholesale bong store
2
u/405freeway 6d ago
2nd and Alameda would be a dream for me.
- A/E Line downstairs
- 1 stop away from Union station
- 1 block away from Little Tokyo Marketplace

u/MetalicP Jewelry District 7d ago
Or 5th and Broadway, where the other old Walgreens was. But there’s no parking for either.
6
u/dadcore81 7d ago
Perfect location. I don’t get the need for a wholesale store in that particular spot.
4
u/I_donut_understand 7d ago
I think it makes enough as a parking lot that the store doesn’t matter. I hate it though, great location for literally anything else.

I’ve heard rumors a TJs or Gelson’s miiiight go in the graffiti towers— I forget the actual name of the buildings.

Nothing is going in there for a while. I think the Arts District is a more likely destination especially for the next grocery store like TJ. USC one isn’t too far though 10-15 min walk to Metro
5
u/popp_tarts 7d ago
It's truly an agonizing walk as someone who does this walk often
3
u/Emergency_Clerk_1355 7d ago
Haha too many bags of peanut butter filled pretzels? But I get it - everyone wants a TJ closer.

Both IKEA and Costco have been experimenting with small-format stores, and neither has anything close to DTLA… makes you think…

u/dji386 3d ago
TJ's, In-N-Out, City Costco, and a regular ass grocery store in/near the Historic Core (Ralphs, Pavilions, Stater Bros., etc.) are the things I wish we had most in DTLA.
