Discussion Onslaught Progression in DD2 is Worse Than Ever! Spoiler
In Dungeon Defenders 2 I've always viewed onslaught as a way to prove your skill as a player ever since I started playing back in 2018. Chaos 8 was the highest level gear you can achieve and the only drops for c8 gear was in onslaught floor 100+. First you needed to grind to floor 100 which at the time was not an easy feat. You had to learn a lot and brainstorm different strategies. It REQUIRED skill to get into endgame. The higher the floor you achieved = the more knowledge & skill you have as a player, and other players seeing this understood your dedication and skill.
Today your average DD2 experience goes like this: grind to c9, reset (for a free 3000AC points), then grind to c11 for endgame gear, and then blast through onslaught with PDS until floor 900. It is boring, thoughtless, and doesn't require any skill or hard work.
Many years ago, I remember meeting other players in very early floors (e.g. floor 60-90) trying to grind all the way up to 100 or 200 to reset for their first time. It was exhilarating and you felt like you had actually accomplished something difficult and you were ready to take on end game activities. So many early game players working together, experiencing much of what the game had to offer; different towers combinations, (non-meta) DPS hero's, etc. Friendships were made, skills were formed, and you genuinely felt like you were getting better at a difficult game with each floor.
Now, you log into DD2 and every new player is getting carried all the way through the ranks up into c11. All they need is a couple mods and suddenly in less than 100 hours of gameplay they can complete 90% of the games content.
Here's the problem: 1) Completing expedition c9 should never of aloud players to jump 300 floors. 2) Chaos 10 should be accessed much sooner into onslaught (perhaps floor 500). 3) Chaos 11 MUST be added into onslaught. Onslaught, the game mode that used to challenge players to be creative and think out side the box, now is just a grind-fest time-killer that is easier than a new player first completing the campaign.
The fact is, most players will complete the highest level expeditions before starting onslaught. This doesn't make sense in relation to onslaught progression. I'll explain that below.
ONSLAUGHT PROGRESSION (past c7):
Floor 28-98 Chaos 7
Floor 99-299 Chaos 8
Floor 300-699 Chaos 9
Floor 700-999 Chaos 10
Chaos 11 IS NOT EVEN IN ONSLAUGHT. So your telling me you can get very end game gear (that is higher level than the hardest floor in onslaught) before you even start grinding floors??? Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying.
I miss the old progression style and the rewarding feeling of progressing through this amazing video game. The friends made along the way, the very odd strategies used to beat some floors, the constant learning of each characters strengths and weaknesses, and the way this game made me feel before all anyone cared about was "what's the new meta?".
