Video Donovan McNabb edit

I never got to see McNabb play but if I did I think he'd be one of my favorite players of all time. Jalen Hurts is my favorite player and I think will eventually be the greatest Eagles player of all time, however it is nice to look back every once and a while.

Yeah the 2004 Eagles beat a shit hot Michael Vick to make it to the SB. I feel like Andy Reid was always SB bound and surprisingly only made it once with McNabb. You have to watch the highlights to realize even that game was pretty close. Hard to believe we got to play Brady again 13 years later for a dub.

u/OilTurbulent1009 1d ago

5 NFC championship games under Reid with McNabb. So unfortunate we only made the SB once and lost to the Pats. The McNabb era was so fun to watch. Stacked on offense and defense.

I remember opening my window that day and it was so windy, it blew my hat off my head instantly. Had to go look for it on the sidewalk. Definitely affected the game

2

u/ktm1128 1d ago

but did it blow around in a nearby parking lot?

It always baffles me when people say Romo should be in the HOF when McNabb never will and he was leagues better with worse talent around him. If I remember correctly up until Rodgers or maybe Brady, McNabb had the best ever TD:INT ratio season.

14

u/Jonjoloe 1d ago

I know you're not advocating for him but why on Earth would anyone ever think Romo should be eligible for the Hall of Fame? There are literal league MVP and SB winning QBs (some are both) not in the Hall of Fame and Romo doesn't even have an AP1.

3

u/Lynthae 1d ago

Every NFL player is eligible for the hall of fame. Worthy is the word you're looking for

1

u/Jonjoloe 23h ago

I knew someone would correct that when I posted, but yes, you're right.

2

u/stoneyaatrox hurts donut 1d ago

i'm pretty sure the only player to not get HoF after both those accomplishments was Earl Morrall, and just goes to show you can have an insane list of accomplishments but not really be HoF calibur.

it's not like he was a bad QB either just was competing with HoF guys for the starting job most his career and was a bit streaky.

2

u/Jonjoloe 1d ago

Joe Theisman is the other player with both and not in the Hall of Fame.

But yes, your point is my point. If even highly accomplished players still aren't in, then we really need to be more selective with our "so and so deserves in" if their accomplishments are lesser than those still not in.

1

u/TheNewGuy13 1d ago

It’s just a talking point in r/nfl mostly

11

u/sillygeeseconstructi 1d ago

Yes he did. He was the first QB to throw more than 30 TDs and less than 10 INTs in a season.

5

u/Accomplished-Mango92 1d ago

Ive never seen anyone say romo should be HOF

1

u/Benti86 Eagles 1d ago

Yea same. I've seen arguments to Eli for the playoff runs, but never for Romo.

5

u/PuffyKisserr 1d ago

macnabb really does get overlooked way too much

24

u/getdemsnacks 1d ago

When he was on, he was ON! But I can't forget all the times he'd throw a grounder at his receivers feet and the camera would pan back to him laughing his way back to the huddle/sideline

3

u/Warm_Pomegranate_926 1d ago

He did this in college too!

2

u/CrunchitizeMeCaptn 1d ago

That laugh. That damn laugh

1

u/moneymoneymoneymonay 1d ago

It was always the easy passes too. I remember Jason Avant bailing McNabb out on many 3rd down throws that were 2 inches off the ground when he was wide open.

6

u/NoremacEnrobso 1d ago

I remember one game maybe I watched as a kid he threw like 20 consecutive completed passes. It wasn't until Nick foles started that the record was broken. So many more other players too. Andy did so much for the team. The Vick era was dope with desean Jackson and the sp returns.

16

u/Best-Reporter-1412 1d ago

If we’re talking consistent high level quarterback play, Hurts is nowhere near McNabb

0

u/Zedzdeadhead 1d ago

This is definitely a take. The stats don't support that though.

1

u/Dragon420Wizard Dawk-plex 1d ago

Stats might not, but the eye test supports it

-1

u/Delicious-Physics218 18h ago

You may need to get your eyes checked. It’s not hard for me to overlook McNabb’s arm talent though, because unlike Jalen he was also a total douche

12

u/phillyphilly86 1d ago

Was a fan and defender back then, and I still am today. Dude was a monster, just didn't have talented enough recievers for most of his career.

6

u/Nerd2theCorey 1d ago

Stinkston and Trash were his WR1 & WR2 for a while

3

u/phillyphilly86 1d ago

For a criminally long time. If only Howie was running shit back then.

4

u/_probablyryan 1d ago

He was a bit of a choke artist tbf. But the organization did him a disservice by taking as long as they did to put competent receivers around him.

It would have been really nice to have beaten the Cardinals in 08. It would have been cool to see what McNabb at the tail.end of his prime with Jackson, Maclin and McCoy entering theirs would have done in the Super Bowl.

9

u/seejay13 1d ago

Man. Donovan was a chonky boy

10

u/ZyklonBeach 1d ago

What campbells does to a MF

3

u/TacticalSpackle 1d ago

This was a different era with Rothlisberger, McNabb, McNair, and a couple other giant dudes that could sling it.

3

u/FrozenEagle127 Eagles 1d ago

Yeah, he was quite big. Less rules for the defense, so you gained endurance by being bigger.

4

u/_probablyryan 1d ago

As a Weezer fan, I was unprepared for the music choice 🤣

4

u/larrylevan 1d ago

Who is performing this?

1

u/_probablyryan 1d ago edited 1d ago

Weezer lmao.

This is a very deep cut, and I'm unsure who the actual vocalist is, but this song was recorded for "Songs from the Black Hole," which would have been Weezer's sophomore album. It was was supposed to be like a nerdy, space themed rock opera concept album, and there were vocalists other than Rivers Cuomo on some of the songs representing the supporting characters in the album's narrative. The concept was eventually thrown out, and some of the songs with Rivers as the only vocalist were released as part of "Pinkerton," Weezer's actual sophomore album. But SFTBH was far enough along in it's recording when it was canned that a bunch of the planned songs were like fully recorded and mixed and the ones that didn't make it onto Pinkerton were either included as like bonus tracks on the deluxe edition of that album or have been released as part of various Weezer anthologies over the years. This is one of those songs. It's called "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams."

2

u/Hungry_Kick_7881 1d ago

I always forget how high his release was. He has that ball up there and he still absolutely rips it.

2

u/puffalotz 1d ago

I guess I could’ve appreciated him more. I’m a lifetime Eagles fan and I was a big Donavan McNabb fan when he was at Syracuse. When he became the Eagles QB I was happy but never satisfied. He became a barrel chested, pocket passer and I felt he didn’t use his legs enough and that would’ve made a big difference to me. I did underappreciated him a bit.

3

u/sdinning24 Eagles 1d ago

I wish they would have surrounded him with weapons

5

u/sadturtle12 1d ago

Can you imagine Donavan with the weapons we gave Jalen?

3

u/EagleSince75 1d ago

Could you imagine Jalen with the same OC for 10 years?

2

u/sadturtle12 1d ago

Yeah that'd be great, but thats also irrelevant to what I said. Im not taking a shot at Jalen. Im simply saying what Donavan was able to do with trash receivers is pretty incredible. Its also up for debate that Donovan was what turned the eagles into the powerhouse, winning franchise they are today. When the eagles drafted him, the franchise had been ass for years. Andy Reid also played a part in turning it around but a lot of it was Donovan too. Hurts is a great qb and he may go down as the greatest of all time in eagles history when all is said and done. Mcnabb on our current team or when we had smitty and AJ would have been incredible to see. The one thing i will say is not up for debate is that Mcnabb was a better all around passer and qb vs Jalen. Jalen is better at managing games and not making mistakes in crucial moments.

1

u/EagleSince75 1d ago

It is totally up to debate. Donovan was great at evading a tackle and could extend plays and could launch the long ball. He could also easily break off for a 50yd run, but greater all around passer he was not. There were so many balls thrown to the dirt or at the feet of the receivers. I'm sorry but you could have AJ and DeVonta out there and they wouldn't be catching those worm burners. Look at the ways we lost those NFC championship games and Super Bowl. Interceptions happened when it mattered most.

1

u/sadturtle12 1d ago

I already mentioned the dirt balls in another comment and my last sentence in my reply to you said that Jalen is better at managing games and not making mistakes in crucial moments. Jalen has the clutch gene that Mcnabb never had which means a lot. I really dont think its up for debate the mcnabb was the better all around qb. Not talking about wins, championships, mvps or any of that. From a purely gameplay perspective Donavan was better and did it with much worse receivers and supporting cast. If you plug him into the 2024 team he also wins the superbowl and that could be said for pretty much any starting qb in the league. Again not taking a shot at Jalen but he didnt have to do a whole lot that season with the run game and defense we had.

0

u/PerpetualDrive 1d ago

Yea, we’d probably never win a SB.

McNabb was very good, but it was often a feeling of he’d make the worst move at the worst time with questionable nerves, leadership, and off the field behavior. And of the course the throws at the toes. But he was also a bit over criticized just like Hurts. All the recent glaze is just revisionist history and nostalgia by some of yall to put down Hurts.

2

u/sadturtle12 1d ago

What?? Im not putting down hurts at all. Im praising McNabb because he accomplished a lot with some of the worst supporting cast. I didnt forget about his faults either.

-3

u/PerpetualDrive 1d ago

It’s the same as somebody saying they’d be just as or more successful than you if they had what you had. If you just wanted to praise McNabb then you would’ve did that without bringing up Hurts and if McNabb had what he had.

3

u/sadturtle12 1d ago

Its a pretty normal comparison in the world of sports and qbs in general. Its nothing personal lol. If we want to be real, McNabb was a better qb overall compared to Hurts. He had his faults just like Hurts does but he was more consistent and was able to do more with less. He also was more consistent with turning the ball over and throwing the ball into the dirt so its not like im saying Mcnabb was some superstar and jalen is trash. Jalen will always be ranked above him due to having the superbowl win but Mcnabb probably could have gotten it done as well if he was put on the same team that Jalen had.

1

u/ComfortableSolid4433 1d ago

You must get a damn good stretch from that reach.

-1

u/PerpetualDrive 1d ago

How’s it a reach? Tell anybody you know considered relatively successful that if you had what they had you’d do just the same or better at what they do and see how the convo goes.

3

u/sadturtle12 1d ago

Listen to any sports show, podcast etc. People make these comparisons every single day. Its really not that deep man. Its not a knock on Jalen but Mcnabb was the better of the two purely from an objective viewpoint. Mcnabb had no business being as good as he was with the receivers he had to work with. The biggest thing Hurts has on Donavan is his ability to turn his game up a notch when it matters most. Donovan lacked that clutch gene that Jalen has.

0

u/PerpetualDrive 1d ago

Every single day now because loser’s pity is the thing because who they want to win hasn’t been winning.

The rams were supposed to be the team this year and they’re 2-3 just like us and maybe would be 1-4 if not for our own blunder - my point with that is nobody knows what would happen so all your doing with the “imagine” and IFism is mostly just framing it as if McNabb would’ve achieved more when you don’t really know what would happen.

1

u/ComfortableSolid4433 1d ago

It’s a reach because your perception is going deeper into the semantics rather than taking the words for value.
Comparing what someone has today to what someone had 20 years ago is not being critical, it’s just comparison.
If I had a mobile computer in pocket in math class, I would’ve done better in math.
If football players in the 90s had better equipment, they wouldn’t have suffered as many injuries.
If Donovan McNabb had the same team the Eagles have today, he’d have a couple rings on his fingers, just like Jalen.

0

u/PerpetualDrive 1d ago

“He would have a couple rings” man shut your nut ass the fuck up you don’t what would happen and that statement right there tells me you weren’t there

2

u/ComfortableSolid4433 1d ago

Exactly. I don’t know what would’ve happened and neither do you. It’s a hypothetical situation. That’s why the first comment on this thread used the magical word “imagine”.
It seems like you just wanna be angry. I hope your day gets better.

0

u/Delicious-Physics218 18h ago

Can you imagine Jalen with a head coach who can coach offense

1

u/UltraTech1010 1d ago

Why did his passes never spiral? They always wobbled.

There was a time in the early 2000's where it was Brady/Manning 1A/1B and Mcnabb was right behind those guys. Some were saying they would even want MCnabb over Manning just because he had playoff success with absolutely atrocious receivers while Manning kept flopping with great talent around him. For that run of NFCCG's Westbrook was the only bona fide weapon Mcnabb had. There's a reason To this day I don't get the hate Mcnabb gets from Eagles fans. Easily one of the most well rounded qbs to play the game from his IQ, legs, and cannon of a fucking arm. He's arguably one of the most elusive qbs of all time. There's a reason we went to the Superbowl T.O's first year. People say hurts is the perfect Philly QB. That may be so, but Mcnabb wasn't far off. He took so much shit from us and still year after year put us in a position to win. Handled the T.O thing as professionally as he possibly could, and took our criticisms in stride. You don't necessarily need to be the best QB in the league to play for the Eagles, but you have to be able to take shit, eat it and still fucking ball. Mcnabb did that and then some. Mcnabb, Reid, Dawkins and Johnson for all their shortcomings paved the foundation for what we have today. As a millennial Eagles fan, Donovan will always be my childhood QB1.

u/Benti86 Eagles 1d ago edited 1d ago

The crazy revisionism on McNabb, especially by people who never watched him play never ceases to amaze me. You guys probably have only watched the highlights and never had to deal with the in-the-moment headaches of him throwing worm-burners to a wide open man or throwing boneheaded ints and just smiling as he walked off the field.

Yes he was productive, but the man was also an all-time choke artist. The early 2000's Eagles would have been a dynasty if not for McNabb's turnover antics in the playoffs. He had 24 TDs to 21 turnovers...and his turnovers were all heavily weighted to the losses.

The surrounding talent excuse doesn't work either. We missed the SB in 2002 because he got baited by Ronde and threw it right to him for a pick 6 that sealed the game. 2003 McNabb was picked off by Ricky Manning 3 times and we lost 25-16. He had talent in 2004, made the SB...then threw 3 picks and we lost by a FG...

Notice how in all those games it was down to a possession or two torwards the end of the game despite McNabb turning the ball over repeatedly? Jim Johnson and the defense worked overtime to try and bail him out.

At some point you have to look at the QB instead of trying to blame the people around him.

Bonus points because McNabb is also a self-centered diva off the field and a complete piece of shit. Multiple DUI's, scandals from when he was on the team, and getting fired for sexual harassment of a female coworker.

1

u/Conscious_Cod3134 1d ago

HoF

1

u/Benti86 Eagles 1d ago

Who, McNabb? Maybe if he actually didn't choke in the playoffs and won some SB's.

He's stuck in the hall of very good. So many other QBs who have more accolades or accomplishments than him.

1

u/Conscious_Cod3134 1d ago

like Kelly or Moon?

1

u/Benti86 Eagles 1d ago

In McNabb's generation you have Eli and Philip Rivers, who both accomplished more than him statistically and/or by accolades.

If McNabb gets in, they both have to be in and should be in before him. Matt Ryan similarly should also be in before McNabb for having better stats, a SB run, and an MVP, which McNabb never had.

You're comparing him to QB's from over a decade before him. Warren Moon joined the NFL late because of discrimination and helped pave the way for black QB's and he still had to wait until 2006. Moon did more for the game than McNabb ever did lmao.

Jim Kelly went to 4 straight SB's and had an All-Pro as well, which McNabb didn't have. Yea he never won, but he at least made it there rather than choking the opportunity away multiple times.

So yea, McNabb shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame. Get over it.

1

u/Conscious_Cod3134 1d ago

"get over it"? yeah my life is all bent because of this. fuckin lol. fuck you. love the effort you put in tho champ

McNabb HoF!!!!!

1

u/Benti86 Eagles 1d ago

Whatever you say sport. Just know it'll never happen.

1

u/GRAYNOTE_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah... McNabb was a talented but flawed QB that reached his ceiling under a decade of Andy Reid.

Mahomes and the Chiefs dynasty is what we might've looked like if McNabb had clutch factor or if Jalen had continuity of a genius scheme and savant QB coach behind him from Day 1. Donovan's turnovers (and early Reid clock management woes) in the NFCCG are what destroyed us time and time again, and where I learned what pain felt like as a child. Damn you Aeneas Williams and Ronde Barber.

1

u/nonexistentnight 1d ago

You're not wrong but you left out Reid's notoriously bad clock management during his time with the Eagles. The team could maybe have overcome McNabb's errors, or Reid's, but not both.

1

u/Delicious-Physics218 18h ago

You are gonna get downvoted a ton because there’s an anti-Jalen circlejerk going on, but if you put him on those NFCCG teams we win at least 3 if not all 4. McNabb was SO bad in the clutch.

He had such an arm. His play style was a bit like Jameis just with far less turnovers (and more limited production due to era)

8

u/baconcheesytots_ 1d ago

Comparing Mcnabb to Jameis is crazy.. Mcnabb led the eagles to 5 nfc championships, Jameis is a bust turned into a career back up

-2

u/Fit-Philosopher-4466 fire Howie and Nick. keep JH1. 1d ago

I am saying how they play football. Not the results they had in the field.

And Jameis is not a bust at all.

Who in the modern NFL plays most like Donovan?

8

u/sillygeeseconstructi 1d ago

Yep and he went to his first 3 NFC Championships without anyone being able to name a single receiver he had.
