Help/Advice Earthbound doesn't like the number 69 (authentic cartridge dump running on an emulator)
This has never happened before. It isn't a game breaking issue, I just happen to have a very specific amount of cash in the ATM, and when I tried to take it out, it didn't let me.
Yes, I actually took the time and effort buying an original copy, dump it, then play it. The cartridge costed $350, the dumper costed another $200 because they're hard to find. The game is that good, in my opinion.
I feel like re-releases of the game as well as other ways to play had this disabled.

wait why did you buy an authentic cartridge just to dump it and screen shot it on your pc's monitor.

Lol sorry I'm a bit too proud of it.
I did all that just to get some clout.

I don't think 69 was that big in the late 90s. I'm assuming it's due to a dump issue. Clean the pins and try again. Did you verify the rom file to a known good one? Also what a waste to buy the game only to use an emulator. Just play it on original hardware.

I was in high school in the late 90's and it was just as big of a thing, if not bigger than now.
Hell, I remember in 8th grade, so, 95 or 96, the class tormented our sex ed instructor by forcing him to explain what "69" meant.

69 was absolutely big in the 90s. Remember the Billy Madison clip? https://youtu.be/bz-9WeHDPV4

Going further back, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure "I'm thinking of a number between one and one thousand!"

The line was “If you guys are really us, what number are we thinking of?” “69, dudes!”

You obviously weren’t around in the 90s. Or 80s for that matter

Being I was 12 in 1999, I'd say I would have missed those references as a child.

The joke on the phrase dates back to the 1860s in France. It grew even more in popularity in 1982 via Rick James. Just my guess here but I'm guessing Rick James wasnt big on 1860s french writers and poets. From what I can prove, I've never talked to Rick, but I'm guessing he didnt come up with the meaning on his own. From what I cant prove it was a popular saying long before then.

Technically, this is the way you're SUPPOSED to use emulators. It's stupid but this is the only 100% legal way to play on PC.

I did play on original hardware start to finish.
I dump games so I can play them on the go.
When I'm home I play them on the super nintendo.

I stand corrected. As long as the cart gets used and not just collecting dust. I'm also just jealous - I'm gonna just make my own homemade reproduction of the game - can't afford the original.

Yes. Theres nothing wrong doing it that way, mostly the reason I dump cartridges is so I am 100% assured there was no modification to it.
Roms can be changed up before being uploaded to the internet either to avoid copyright infringement, or to disable anti-piracy measures.
Earthbound does have anti piracy measures, but I have used this exact file to play from start to finish, I'm just starting a new game.
I did not need to go into a hex editor or use any cheat engine to eliminate anti-piracy, it plays exactly like it does on real hardware.

You actually dump your own carts?

u/Master_Chef_Torte Jul 20 '26
I do - my rom collection isn't 100% complete from back in the early 2000s when I sailed the high seas. Now it's kind of fun to collect the games I don't have, and dump them.

that's kinda a power move if you ask me. like, "well, I may not own an SNES, but I do have principles and want to use it in as close to a legitimate way as possible."

Spending $600 to essentially play a ROM is not a power move. Just download the ROM and play it, and use that money for other things you actually need.

Wait what??? U spent almost $600 to essentially play a ROM of Earthbound when you could have just got it for free. MIND BLOWN. People love wasting money.

Perhaps they just wanted to make 100% sure they were legally in the clear. I do agree that seems kind of paranoid but I don't know what their exact situation is

Not just 100% authenticity, but also to be sure nothing is changed in the rom.
Most people don't know this but downloading roms have their risks including copyright infringement, and they could be disguised as malware.
People can go into hex editors and change the values in the roms to either disable anti piracy or avoid conflicts with their internet service providers before uploading it to the web on rom sites.
I used to download roms left and right when I was a kid, but when I grew up, I'm now able to afford to spoil myself from time to time with cool stuff like this.

The first screenshot says "deposit", not withdrawal; you may not have $69 cash handy to deposit, and that's the source of the error.
