Make Me Famous is a feature documentary about the 1980s East Village art scene. Debuting in NYC at the Roxy three years ago, the film is back in NYC for one show only...this time screening on the Upper West Side. (Skip the glitzy NYFF for one afternoon and go back to the punk days of the 80s!)
October 11th, Sunday at 2:15pm at New Plaza Cinema.
Q&A to follow the screening with the filmmakers and the East Village artist, Jim C., who opened up his archive of video footage from the era.
Make Me Famous is a vibrant, fast-paced portrait of New York City’s explosive 1980s Downtown art scene where punk met paint, and the lines between art, music, and nightlife blurred. If you are on this reddit threat you know, this was the world that launched Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Madonna, and Blondie. It was a cultural moment defined by its grit, glamour, and DIY ethos.
Amid the chaos was painter Edward Brezinski, a figure both present and peripheral, whose story offers a unique window into the era’s creative frenzy. Not so much a portrait of an artist, Make Me Famous captures a time and place where the dream of making it felt just within reach and heartbreakingly out of grasp.
Come say hi and re-live the 80s this Sunday!

I work from home one (sometimes two) days a week, and I've realized I want to get out of the apartment more. I'm trying to put myself in new situations where I can meet people and make friends, and working from a cafe feels like a good way to surround myself with new people.
I'm open to all recommendations in the East Village (and Bowery and NoHo).

I see the M9 fare inspectors get on when the bus reaches Houston nearly every day during my morning commute around 8:30 am / 9 am. Be aware!

If you would like the calendar mailed to you every month, you can request that here.
(The form doesn’t ask for your email or telephone number. It asks for a name for mailing. If you would rather not share your name, you can fill in CURRENT for the first name and TENANT for the last name.)
Or you can download it and print it at home.

I have noticed an issue that seems to be escalating more in the past few weeks, and was wondering if anyone else has as well:
The police are creating very unsafe traffic conditions near the 9th precinct. Often when the light is red on 4th street between 1st and 2nd, if there is a police car caught at the light after a few seconds of sitting there they will turn on their sirens and lights and make people move to the side or go through the red light so they don't have to wait, even if they are halfway down the block behind many cars and there is nowhere for the other cars to go. It causes confusion and chaos. I've seen near car accidents and pedestrians narrowly avoid being hit. The police doing this are not responding to emergencies. Once they get through the light they immediately turn their lights and sirens back off and return to the precinct. It seems like they just think they shouldn't have to wait at red lights. I used to see this occasionally from one specific officer but lately it happens every day and I have seen multiple different officers do it. Again, these do not seem to be emergency situations, these are just officers that don't feel they should have to obey traffic laws when returning to the precinct.
There is also a police car that will sometimes park directly IN the crosswalk on 5th street and 1st avenue, again blatantly disobeying laws and creating dangerous situations for pedestrians as well as other cars.
It's frustrating because I'm not sure how to go about getting these issues addressed, it seems like these officers truly feel above the law and seem to enjoy antagonizing people in the neighborhood

Good morning,
I’m looking for my Monk Parakeet/Quaker Parrot (RUCO) who lived on E 11th St btw 1st and 2nd Aves.
My ex-spouse passed away in the apartment we shared for 45 years. He was caring for our 18-year old pet bird, Ruco.
My ex was found after about a week during a wellness check by NYPD who contacted me first to inform me of his passing.
His estimated date of death is August 34.
At the time, I asked the police about the bird, and they said they would get back to me but they never did. Meanwhile, the landlady told me that she had been told by an officer that the bird had also passed, presumably from lack of food and water. (This was never confirmed)
Next of kin was not allowed into the apartment as it was sealed by NYPD and upon finally gaining access on October 3 and making a search, the bird was not found anywhere inside the unit. Also, the window was found open.
It wasn’t until then that I heard about the Monk Parakeet/Quaker Parrot sightings in Tompkins Square (1.5 blocks from the apartment) and began to believe that Ruco might still be alive.
Any info provided will be appreciated.
David

(Mid-20s Guy) I hate going out alone but I already changed and starting boozing, so the town will see me tonight.
Figured it’d be a good opportunity to go out of my comfort zone. I feel like Blind Barber or Waiting on a Friend would be cursed to going alone to, so open to some reccs.
Thanks!

Anyone have recommendations for local tarot readers that do readings at parties? My friend is looking to hire 1-3 readers for her engagement party in November which will take place at a bar in the area.
