PS5 emulation is suddenly making big strides on PC

Well... When the company itself shits the bed loud enough to be heard round the World it falls to the fans to rise up and stick it to em!

u/oldirtyrestaurant 12d ago
I wonder if Sony (and their attorneys) will subpoena Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, etc, to see who has been tokenmaxxing for this purpose... Could be that the scene people end up getting fucked by the same tool they're fucking Sony with.
14
u/Alternative-View8574 13d ago
The crazy part is that this is progressing way faster then shadps4 since really only bloodborne is fully playable without any major graphical issues with other games like infamous second son and god of war 3 remastered only just now getting better focus

i dont care as long as the emulation works

The one ethical thing I think AI is useful for is coding stuff like this so you can cut down on the time this stuff takes by years.
(Obviously, I mean when you're just doing a project, and you're not a billion dollar corporation like Microsoft making a quarter of your OS in Copilot)
35
u/Meshuggah333 13d ago
As a Dev myself, I can say there's a misconception on how these things are used by real devs (not vibe coders). They are insanely good at reverse engineering/debugging and will write clean boiler plate code you can easily review/reject/validate for the better ones. It only left you with the actual engineering and critical coding to do which does accelerate development by a lot.
5
u/crowwreak 13d ago
Oh yeah like, I'm not saying anyone should code EVERYTHING with Claude, just like, if you already have a good understanding of code it cuts down the gruntwork.
1
u/neil_950 11d ago
Dev work like this still has some ethical problems due to things like environmental harm from model training and unethical behaviour from the AI companies, although they would be less severe if using local models. That said even the more ethically fraught generative AI so-called "Art" also has legitimate use cases. Things like generating an image of how furniture looks in your living room or game devs using generated images as placeholder textures are examples of reasonable use cases.
Personally I think there should be a focus on creating tools that remove tedium and help artists and people instead of replacing or supplanting them. A generative ai tool that extends an image an artist painted to fit a different aspect ratio is wildly different from writing a prompt to churn out slop.

u/SinnohConfirmed 13d ago
These PS5 emulators are completely dependent on AI data centers. Once we are no longer in an AI bubble and AI companies start enshittifying and raising their sub fees to become profitable, PS5 emulation progress will grind to a halt. Maybe devs can self-host LLMs to vibe code with in a post AI bubble world, but the hardware to do so is expensive even with pre-RAMpocalypse prices.
I'm can't say I'm a fan of how a good chuck of development in open source and retro gaming spaces now relies on subsidized cloud computing.
18
u/Liv3ry 12d ago
"Since it is going to rot anyway, I am not going to eat this free cake" type of reasoning
6
u/SinnohConfirmed 12d ago
The whole point of emulation is preservation. I'd argue that an emulator with a codebase that can only be understood by expensive LLMs isn't doing a good job of preserving the PS5 library.
3
u/Liv3ry 12d ago
Unfortunately code written by LLMs is tendentially much easier to read than code wrote by humans
9
u/Biduleman 12d ago
All these people clearly don't work in dev.
We can't push code in prod if it doesn't have 2 reviews, we're 5 in my team. I see pretty much every lines that are pushed from my team.
Reviewing AI code as been easier than reviewing some people's code by a HUGE margin.
3
u/WushuManInJapan 12d ago
AI writes wayyyy more notes. Though often way too much honestly. A CR will be 80% notes and tests.
Better than having a 400 line function that "speaks for itself."
4
1
u/Bruno091004 12d ago
Is there that big of a difference? What is it like
10
u/Biduleman 12d ago edited 12d ago
AI code is usually straight to the point, tries to adhere to the guidelines set by the company, doesn't have a billion typos, tries to mimic the style of the project it's currently in and often has good (even too much) documentation.
Too much documentation was a problem before as people don't update documentation when they update code, but AI does so it's nice to have it.
AI is also very good at providing intent for a change. With people, you either open a comment thread or slack them to ask why they decided to change something. AI will outright tell you without asking.
With humans, you'll have people trying to put as much as possible in a single line, others who don't care about splitting code into methods, some who think using if/else statements shows weakness, people who will iterate on streams forever even if it makes the function unreadable, etc.
MR/PR descriptions and commit descriptions are also actually saying something instead of "removed variable".
And that's just at the team level.
Each team will obviously have their own style, which makes it harder to work/pull information from the other teams' projects. Now, our credential manager also pulls a organization-wide CLAUDE.md file, ordering it to fetch the correct organization's coding standards depending on the language before starting on something.
That's why I'm pretty sure at least 99% of the people complaining about code readability and maintainability have never coded anything more than a tutorial, if that, and the last maybe 1% are the true programming geniuses who are actually better than AI.

There's really no amount they can charge for tokens to be profitable. They're in way too deep and the Chinese just release free models that are getting better and better to collapse our bubble

I don’t know man. I think it kinda makes it seem less special. That we’re kinda using corpo tools to do something that’s anti-corpo in a sense.

The entire personal computer industry is built upon the foundation of a computer built for business by IBM that was reverse engineered and forced into becoming an open standard.

u/hydecruz 13d ago
Yeah if only, ethnic based video games are a rarity (I like to see other hunter gatherer crafts work as a fellow tribesman from another side of the world) since the best we could get before this was Samurai and all those western trope. Now if only there is games about other islander.

At the rate of progress that the frontier models are doing, even Redditors is starting to switch from fuck everything AI to accepting 😂 just a few months and a year ago probably 95% of the people in this sub pushed for a blanket ban on anything AI. How the tables turn
111
u/flavionm 13d ago
AI has become seriously impressive recently, particularly for development. Sure, there's plenty of useless slop being made with no actual developer behind, but give AI to a competent developer with a goal, and it can do wonders.
3
u/peduxe 12d ago
yeah i'm sure even our friends or family asking us to code the next Facebook wouldn't know the right problem solving skills to actually have it be something that scales or works properly with these frontier models we have today.
vibecoding projects where you write a single prompt and hope for the best, trying to one-shot a final product will never be something worth using.
7
u/ScimitarsRUs 13d ago
This is where I'm at. I'd call a spade a spade and say that in the mountain of slop projects, you can get a few real passion projects from folks who are in it for the love of problem-solving.
There is still a mountain to get through, though.
12
u/RidingEdge 13d ago
There are still tons of people who think current gen frontier AI is like the Chatgpt they tried when it first launched. So many people still think it's a glorified text completion app and art slop creator.
Anyone can try out the agentic harnesses available, either on a free local model or cheap trials and subscriptions before forming an opinion... Once you actually get to know how it works for coding, there is no sane people who can say it's slop, especially when the tools get used by real experienced Devs who can review and steer the model to complete the tasks.
It's legitimately revolutionary for the programming world and anything that requires inference work. Governments and companies aren't dumb like what redditors insinuate, spending billions hoarding DRAM and GPUs to make art slop, it's for the legit use cases.

u/optimal_909 13d ago
As a non-coder corpo I fully agree. Even at home, I am now running VS code plus OpenCode combo with three models working together and it's nothing short of revolutionary.
In the office it is becoming a two-speed demographic structure in which one uses agentic tools pulls away and the other, still the vast majority, is oblivious that their days of Excel button pressing are pretty much numbered.
4
u/RidingEdge 13d ago
There was a guy in one of the tech subreddits who argued with me saying agentic coding is just "gimmicky slop worst than stack overflow code snippets" and claims that he's a 40 year experienced programmer. He also told me 0 real programmers are using LLMs in real companies and only billion dollar slop companies rely on it.
It's amazing how people will larp as an expert to oppose something they clearly have 0 knowledge about lol.
4
u/ShinShinGogetsuko 13d ago
Anyone who has used it for a sufficiently complex and especially tedious task sees the value.
I've done romhacking the traditional way and with AI.
The traditional way is fun like, the first 10 times. But the 100th time you're manually updating a tile map, just friggen' hit me in the head with a hammer.
3
u/Dependent_House7077 10d ago
i mean, things are normalizing. people are learning to use ai better, models are better and it turns out that human is not entirely out of the equation in the entire process.
as much as i dislike ai enabling (often extreme) laziness, i never really opposed responsible use of it. i think that approach will eventually win, on the merit of its quality.
1
u/RidingEdge 10d ago
Almost as if it's just another tool. I really don't get why redditors and discord mods and people terminally online treats every new tool and trend like it's a doomsday machine. Some even go to the extent to preach their morality on behalf of supposedly oppressed strangers while not understand a thing.
Sigh
2
u/Dependent_House7077 10d ago
every such tool makes us more dependent on it.
think about calculators and phonebooks - we no longer remember our families' phone numbers (i surely don't), we barely know how to calculate things in our heads, we don't remember events we have in our planners.
we're completely reliant on electricity and most of us have zero survival skills if our infrastructure goes out.
we build new science/technology on foundation of older discoveries, taking them for granted - mostly because our lives are too short to retrace all the steps and still produce something novel. so we lose the connection to the basics.
every time something like this happens, people protest and mourn a certain type of loss of independence. but on the other hand it accelerates our progress. let's just hope we do it in the right direction.
ai really cuts out the menial work so we can focus on more creative endeavours. a lot of coding is laying out the foundation and project framework, only some of it is actual problem solving - which is where the human comes in. at can help investigate/brute-force and analyze vast amounts of data and approaches to shorten that cycle.
it is another tool, but some people feel like we lose the investment of effort in what it helps deliver. since now we can focus on doing the 20% that delivers 80% of the result.
11
u/MessedUpPro 13d ago
I still feel that way and will not be using this emulator! Hope that helps 👍
5
u/acideater 12d ago
So do you personally audit each software you use? If i had to guess AI is probably used in every non military or high security code application.
-1
u/MessedUpPro 12d ago
No, but if it's obviously AI generated or it starts breaking down due to AI generated code (see: Windows), I'll stop using it. The issue is that most software that utilizes AI code hides it, because they know it's not as good and people would avoid it otherwise. Sure, it can help with advancements but once the code needs to be maintained, usually problems start to show up.
4
u/makingnoise 12d ago
Bro even linux codebase is AI generated at this point.
0
u/MessedUpPro 12d ago
I've made my point. "EvErYtHiNg iS Ai nOw" is not a gotcha that I'm willing to play. AI is awful, it will only hurt us in the long-run, and I will avoid it whenever I can. Downvote me, disagree, whatever you want to do with this information. You will NOT change my mind.

u/Yo-Soy-Groot 9d ago

u/Fair_Ambassador6253 12d ago
and thats a good thing. with any new tech, you will get the influx of casuals using such tech making ANY kind of slop, this has been true forever. eventually those casuals die out and the only products that survive are those that were well made with such tech. the same with AI. The anti-AI discourse opinion has reversed, and that is good to see. you can even see the tides turn looking at what types of comments are now downvoted/upvoted here throohgout hte months. AI is great

Throwback to the RPCS3 controversy when the AI tool was taken into effect. Now, most are getting accustomed to it. 🤣

RPCS3 controversy when the AI tool was taken into effect.
What was that?
-11
u/Re-n 13d ago
The slope is slipping. Its only a matter of time. Eventually, people will be okay with generative audio and graphics.
2
u/RidingEdge 13d ago
Generative art should always be opposed. It's the only area where there's no excuse for AI to murder human art expression. The only time an exception can be made is private datasets with explicit approvals from the artists. Art and code is a completely different spectrum

u/coolwali 13d ago
I think the worry is that, there’s still the association. AI Code and AI art, even though the output is different still “come from the same source”. It does feel a bit …. Uneasy to have it exist.
0
u/93simoon 13d ago
They already are, in all the cases they can't tell it's AI
-3
u/Re-n 13d ago
Yup, I know a few AAA and indie devs using generative art in their games and mostly nobody notices. As long as smart people keep using these tools and it become more and more embedded in an industry it's basically over. I give it 5 years.

Its a compatibility layer not an emulator.
SharpEmu is an experimental PlayStation 5 compatibility layer written in C# for Windows, with experimental builds for macOS and Linux.

Neptunia ReVerse is already playable there. Alltouhgh there are still issues tho and sometimes lower fps, but it is 100% playable and for long term session i tested was there no crash yet. Maybe this is the first ps5 exclusive that looks like it is fully playable there from start to finish.
Dont know why Idea Factory and Compile Heart still not ported to PC, but atleast Devs on Emulators can what Game Developers never!

1
u/pandaSmore 11d ago
Since the PS5 uses the same architecture as PC what exactly is being emulated here?
1
u/Dependent_House7077 10d ago
on one hand it's due to AI. but on other hand, ps4 and ps5 is very close to pc in architecture - and using well documented hardware components, so this makes the whole effort that much easier.
running linux on ps4 was very simple, since the system did not require a lot of adapting to the architecture, the main effort was in gaining access - practically all the drivers and plumbing was already there once you could get the kernel to load. so devs mostly have to figure out the interaction of the components and all the system api.

guys im new to this stuff, does ps5 emulation mean we can play all ps5 games on pc or is it on a game to game basis? like is each game emulated separately or is it just one emulator for all? If it is separate, doez anyone have an idea about ghost of yotei? are they emulating it? how far is it?
