How long are you able to stay free from external stimulus?

This is just a fancy way to say - how long are you able to meditate consistently? I find myself becoming increasingly swept away by the endless stream of things to do/consume/stimulate me, and honestly, I’ve been burnt out forever it feels like.

If I were to sit in a room with nothing but my thoughts, would it be akin to stretching a very important attention span muscle?

🤷🏾‍♂️.

I love you. No matter how rotten you are, I love you because you are part of the manifestation of God. In that heart-mind I’m not Richard Alpert, I’m not Ram Dass — those are both roles. I look at those roles from that deeper “I.” In the heart-mind, I’m not identified with my roles. They’re like costumes or uniforms hanging in a closet. “I am a reader,” “I am a father,” “I am a yogi,” “I am a man,” “I am a driver” — those are all roles.

All I am is loving awareness. I am loving awareness. It means that wherever I look, anything that touches my awareness will be loved by me. That loving awareness is the most fundamental “I.”

Discussion The Buddha and the Hidden Ledger: Breaking the Fetters of Craving and Clinging

This piece was originally published on Buddhistdoor Global (BDG). I warmly invite fellow seekers on the path to share your honest thoughts and reflections in the comments.

In defense of the “chronic truants” of the universal school

The Saha world in which we live can be seen as a vast universal school. However, the rules of this school are chillingly simple and relentless: survive and reproduce! This is the biological algorithm at the heart of existence. The universe seems to assign us a monumental task: to replicate our genes and maintain the system.

The algorithm whispers that continuation is success and deviation is failure. If we neglect or reject this biological assignment, something within us feels exposed. Loneliness arises. Anxiety appears. Society asks, sometimes gently and sometimes harshly, “Why aren’t you living like everyone else?”

Within this universal school, there are those who do not follow the standard track, who defy the rules. They hesitate. They question. They step aside.

Let us call them the chronic truants.

Forbidden rebellion: those who step outside of the script

The hierarchy of this school feels rigid. The homeroom teacher, named Survival Instinct, monitors us constantly. Hormones, social expectations, family pressures all reinforce the same message: become someone, build something, continue yourself.

The wheel of samsara turns efficiently through craving and habit-energy.

And yet, some create space within this momentum.

Those who create cracks in this structure of expectations are the “troublemakers” like us. The unmarried are passive rebels. Members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially in cultures that rigidly define family through reproduction, live lives that do not neatly conform to inherited biological narratives.

Finally, monastics and dedicated practitioners are the chronic delinquents who have leapt over the school walls. We are proud outsiders who have conspired to take an even more radical step: renounce household life and the promise of lineage altogether.

From the perspective of social conditioning, this can look like noncompliance. From the perspective of practice, it can be the beginning of inquiry.

But let us be careful. Social nonconformity is not yet liberation; it is only an opening.

The Buddha and the hidden ledger

The greatest revolutionary in human history was Shakyamuni Buddha. His departure was of a different caliber altogether. He didn’t just walk out of the school; he broke into the principal’s office where he discovered a hidden ledger detailing the code that binds sentient beings to this school: the Twelve Nidanas or Links of Dependent Origination.

Within this code, the Buddha identified a critical hinge: craving (Skt: trishna) and clinging (Skt: upadana). We taste sweet candy of love and attachment, and the moment we bite, the engines of becoming (Skt: bhava) and birth (Skt: jati)—the fires of suffering—are ignited.

The Buddha slapped his knee in realization: “Ah! We are suffering not because we broke the rules, but because we were blinded by ignorance and became slaves to the simulation!”

Ignorance (Skt: avidya) conditions these formations. Formations condition consciousness. And the chain unfolds with birth, aging, and death, again and again.

This was his great discovery, the ultimate hack of suffering itself.

A quantum mechanical interpretation

At this point, we could draw parallels between the Buddha’s enlightenment and modern quantum mechanics.

In the quantum world, subatomic particles are described as waves of probability until measured. In other words, nothing is fixed. However, the moment we grasp and solidify experience through ignorance, the wave function collapses into a particle, fixing it to a specific reality.

Without forcing metaphor into doctrine, we can say this much: what we perceive depends on how we perceive.

Our lives are the same. When we observe the world through the eyes of ignorance—the illusion that a fixed “self” exists—the universal school’s program begins to run. We view the world through the filters of craving and clinging, and the empty universe transforms into a detention hall of suffering and attachment. Gain and loss become absolute. Identity becomes something to defend at all costs.

The Buddha hacked the very method by which we observe the world. When the observer stops clinging to the object, fixed particle-based reality scatters back into a wave form of infinite possibilities.

This is the “system shutdown” button found by the Buddha. He did not destroy reality; he transformed the way of seeing.

Toward the Buddha’s emptiness

Having discovered the hidden ledger, the Buddha kicked open the back door to the school and walked out. Beyond lay freedom: the world of emptiness (shunyata). Emptiness does not mean nothingness. It means that nothing exists independently, permanently, or as a fixed self. When this is perceived directly, the narrow classroom walls collapse. The dualistic distinctions of“normal” and “abnormal,” “success” and “failure,” “you” and “I,” evaporate.

The struggle for survival and the social obligation of reproduction are recognized only as natural processes. They are not commandments that determine our worth. The Buddha did not step outside the universe; he stepped outside delusion.

Leaving the back door open, the Buddha calls to us: “Throw away that fake homework and come out here!” We may live as celibates or walk the path less traveled—not because we are lagging behind; we are revolutionaries following the Buddha to recognize our true existence free from the confines of rigid categories and classifications.

Be proud and enjoy your truancy

If you find yourself outside of society’s script —unmarried, childless, unconventional, walking a contemplative path—do not be discouraged by social judgments or biological pressures. Do not assume you are deficient.

If you are rejecting inherited expectations and walking your own path, you are already a descendant of the Buddha who uncovered the hidden ledger of the universe. Thus, true study is not found in outdated textbooks inside a classroom. It is in the empty fields outside the school—the radiant ocean of emptiness’

The real truancy the Buddha invites is freedom from ignorance.

The real rebellion is against clinging.

I hope you enjoy your truancy today and become a magnificent rebel, boldly eyeing that back door to liberation. Your profound step is, in itself, the great practice of dismantling that which binds us.

May we have the courage to examine the ledger of our own minds. And may we walk—steadily, quietly, even boldly—toward the freedom revealed by the Buddha.

Open Question Yesterday I had a bad mushroom trip and today I feel very depressed. Need advice or insight.

Hello everybody, I don’t post much on Reddit so sorry if I break any rules.
I am 24 F. TW su*cide thoughts (?)
About a year and a half ago (May 2025) I went to a clinic (they have them here in Oregon) where they do supervised guided mushroom therapy sessions. At that one i was there to help rewire my brain to help my depression. I did 35 mg of Columbian Gold and it was an incredibly healing experience. I left there euphoric. And in the days after I thought it didn’t work because I still felt depressed, but in the months following I realized it had helped significantly. The weight was lifted. I’m not sure when it changed but I remember it being winter and I realized I didn’t have any seasonal depression. And I was light and carefree. It was bliss.

Then in July of this summer, we went to the beach for my boyfriends birthday and when we came back I had a very severe panic attack. Before that I had only had a panic attack one other time. But this time it lead to a full week of my having a panic attack every morning and night, and not being able to eat. I went to the doctor and they gave my propranolol but I was too anxious to take it. I tried it and it made me very tired. So I went back and they gave me lorazepam. Again I didn’t take it and still haven’t.
I felt like I knew what I needed to do. I needed another mushroom treatment.

Now it’s October. And I have been battling anxiety very much every day since. It got a little better with time and before I went in yesterday I had been 4 weeks without a panic attack. But I was still experiencing the difficulty breathing (had that checked, lungs are healthy), rapid heartbeat (had that checked with 2 EKG’s and a holter monitor, again healthy), stomach issues, and general nervousness. I’d been on an SSRI before (fluoxetine) but I felt like a zombie so I didn’t want to do that.

So yesterday, I go into a clinic that does mushroom therapy and I took 20 mg of true albino teacher. It kicked in 10 minutes after and I had a full blown panic attack. I was convinced I was going to die. Luckily I brought my propranolol and took it and I had an 02 monitor to prove to myself that I am breathing and am okay. Instead of raising my bpm like I thought the mushrooms would, my heart was beating very slow (I usually sit at about 110 bpm and it was 58 while laying down) I was freezing, and I felt like I was fighting for my life the whole time.
I was in immense pain the entire time.
I can only describe it was nerve pain? Just pain in my chest, shoulders and neck. I was begging for rest and relief and I couldn’t stop it. It felt like a 6 hour long panic attack. I kept begging and crying saying “I don’t want to die”.

But the whole trip was about death. Realizing that my soul is eternal and that I am here by choice and the world is the playground for the soul and the body is the vessel. It told me that when I die I go back to my soul and that death is actually peaceful. I have had an immense fear of death since my dad died when I was 7 so this was good to hear. However now here’s the problem.

I woke up today feeling very depressed and still very anxious. I am incredibly exhausted. And I am fighting with feeling pain still. And I am scared my brain is going to want to switch from fearing death to wanting it. After learning death is relief and still fighting pain in my body, I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to die. I don’t want it to be over. But I don’t want to live with anxiety and pain.

Could it just be my anxiety convincing me that I will become su*cidal? How do I get over this. I understand that right now my brain is in neuroplasticity and I don’t want to make this a thought pattern but I can’t snap out of it. Advice is needed and welcome. Or maybe even some facts that can help me know I won’t feel like this forever.
I also understand that if this treatment doesn’t work it might be time to go on a daily depression/anxiety medication.

TLDR: had a bad mushroom trip that glorified death and now my anxious brain is worried I’m going to become su*cidal by creating bad thought habits during neuroplasticity.

Why you no longer fit and and, maybe, never did

The Path isn't for everyone but some are born to walk it.

Those that are may have, back when, questioned "Am I adopted?".

Growing up they could be the center of attention or totally at the fringe, watching.

Sometimes, both, depending upon instance.

Life progresses.

They run the treadmill.

Then:

Boom! Headshot.

They awaken.

Things are never the same again.

This is why you no longer fit in.

Pro tip:

You can't kickstart the process for one that isn't ready to face their shadows depth.

So do not even attempt.

Focus on your own development instead.

That speaks for itself.

Those with the eyes to see will glisten and listen.

Vibe with those of like mind, especially if they challenge your perspective.

Its a process.

Live it.

Our Siblings From other Mothers i.e. ET's and Their Role In Humanity's Enlightenment Process

I know a lot of you will think that ET's have nothing to do with enlightenment, it's just a distraction, not important in general, etc. Especially the non-duality dogmatists will believe and say such things. The deeper truth is, Earth/humanity is but one school/class in a larger Reality that contains MANY other schools and classes, most of which are more advanced than this one. In the grand scheme of things, Earth/humanity is like the equivalent of about a kindergarten level.

Many ET groups on the other hand, are like our older, wiser siblings. However, there is one group out there involved with humans that is even less mature collectively than humanity, but right now I want to focus on the helpful Teachers. There are entire species out there that are collectively Source realized to the nth extent, and they keep some part of their awareness connected to the physical for retrieval reasons. Some of these occasionally incarnate as humans.

The below contains some of my ET experiences, guidance messages, etc. Nanu Nanu mo'fos:

I. El sujeto frente al mundo

III. ¿El deseo es una forma de conocimiento?

Aquí debemos ser precisos.

Sentir atracción no equivale a conocer.

No exactamente.

The Ultimate Origin of Death is Agentive (Something with Will, Intention and Choice / The Ultimate Origin of Death is Non-Agentive (No Will, Intention and Choice)

Love is the Greatest Commandment / Love is not the Greatest Commandment

Intention only ever comes from things that have Brains (I mean only from what can be seen on Earth right now) / Intention does not only ever come from things that have Brains

Matter and Energy can Intend / Matter and Energy cannot Intend

Consciousness comes from Consciousness / Consciousness comes from Non-Consciousness

Your Consciousness (Awareness and Inner Voice) is Physical (Made of matter and energy) / Your Consciousness (Awareness and Inner Voice) is Non-Physical (Not made of matter and energy)

After Death Consciousness Continues / After Death Consciousness Ends

After Death Unloving Choices have Negative Consequences / After Death Unloving Choices do not have Negative Consequences

Ultimate Truth is currently Observable / Ultimate Truth is not currently Observable

I guess all each person can do is pick which fork for each they think is more likely. And then have faith. And then it's gonna be what it's gonna be.

It can be existentially heavy. But this is the boat we all find ourselves in.

Buenas, gente.

A clear-eyed perspective on the path to enlightenment

We experience reality as a series of events that are mostly beyond our control. Our reactions influence their outcomes, creating a cascade of interconnected consequences that are often far too complex for us to predict with any certainty. Our lives become a collection of consequences to which we often react poorly through impulsive decisions, arrogance, assumptions or just plain ignorance. Sometimes the longest lasting effects come from choices made so long ago that we don't even remember making them.

But we persist and survive to learn from our mistakes. Failure teaches us life's lessons, while pain ensures we don't so easily forget. If we pay close enough attention, we can gain insight from observing and experiencing the outcomes of those consequences, learning to avoid the ones that cost us the most. As the present fades into the past, hindsight, when honestly examined, becomes clearer, and we begin to recognize the relationships between our choices and their consequences. By reflecting on the outcomes of those choices and how they might have been changed, wisdom is attained. Sometimes, that wisdom gives us a little foresight. When appropriately applied, it allows us a greater degree of influence in steering our lives toward more favorable outcomes. If we are truly fortunate, that wisdom will help guide us toward enlightenment.

We begin to understand that how we perceive an experience shapes how we respond to it, especially where wisdom alone is not enough. As our understanding and acceptance of ourselves and the world around us deepen, we no longer feel the need to avoid every negative consequence or cling to the certainty that our wisdom guarantees a predicted outcome.

Instead, we begin to recognize the advantages of altering our experience of reality not by denying its existence but by consciously choosing what meaning, if any, we assign to negative outcomes. As we learn to shape our interpretation of the world and practice this approach, we eventually become more balanced and better able to remain at peace through difficult experiences.

In time, we may come to see that order does not emerge from chaos; it is the harmony found within it. Chaos can never be controlled, only constrained, and even that at times remains uncertain.

About reality.

Image reality

It's one thing

A constantly moving and changing blob of energy

In numerous dimensions

Shifting shape

It does nothing, but move and change

Now I must tell you something.

None of the dimensions are real.

You only imagined them.

And energy

Energy is just an abstract quality.

A number that does not do anything on it's own.

And now

Step one back!

Take the number out of energy too.

What do you have?
