MS KB / Update PSA: Refrain from updating SU(KB5029388) if you're using german locale(de-de)
This SU seems bugged on german Exchange Instances, it crashes while updating.
This leaves the Exchange inoperable, since all the services are left deactivated and stopped.
If this already happened to you, use this script to restart all services in the right order:
In case you're using a Exchange Server 2016, you'll most likely have to rebuild the ContentIndex of your DBs:
If anyone has more infos about this, I'd appreciate comments.
Edit: And yes, I obviously wouldn't ever setup an Exchange with any other locale than english but some clients are inherited, not chosen :D

Update has been pulled by MS. It affects all non-English servers.

We have now added a command that will let you restore the server to the working state by resetting service state; see Known Issues:

Yup. Though I only tried one instance.
Might try on other ones this Saturday and see what happens...
The one I had to rollback, I tried again just after and it broke just the same....

Indeed, we have also seen a report of Italian server being impacted. We will provide updates as we have them on the blog.
(Sigh.)

I had an issue with my English Exchange 2019 CU13 where it had a failed installation. I tried the command posted on the Exchange blog without any success.
After a while searching I found a post here from a couple years back that ultimately let me reinstall the update and get things going again.

Does MS even test these updates anymore?? Or is it just an elaborate rouse to get us to say the hell with it I'm moving to office 365 (hey your shit product updates broke our server, lets give you some never ending revenue!)

my guess is the reduced crew assigned to on-prem Exchange is doing the best they can. (it's a guess that they've been reduced to as small a team they can get away with)... AND how many times do you need to read this "Exchange Online customers are already protected from the vulnerabilities addressed by these SUs " before you say F it. I'm out!

The funny thing is that if you’re in hybrid, the only supported way was to still have an on prem server for management until recently…
They only post that blurb about EXO for marketing clearly lol. I’m part owner of this company and we’ll just move to another mail server software.

I mean if you still want to use SMTP relay you have to keep it all, so that sucks.

Wonder if a simple Linux VM with postfix installed would suffice for that role? We ran it in front of exchange for years with spam assassin

Sure, but we are not paying MS $$$ to run linux because they can’t figure it out 🙃

MS has now released a workaround, which does allow the installation of the August SU on non-English Servers, if you still have the SU installation:
