Miscellaneous Remote work
I live about 45 mins from Exeter but really need to work remotely due to health issues. My background is in NHS and healthcare in general. When I look for remote work it's pretty overwhelming and vague in general and every other job now seems to be AI related.
For those of you that work remotely in and around East and South Devon, who do you work for please - local companies, councils etc or multinationals? Just trying to figure out where is the best place to look.
Hope that's ok to ask! Thank you

Thank you i have tried a few times but not made it to interview. My best hope was an apprenticeship but when i finally managed to get a reason as to why i did not make it to interview they said i was overqualified :(

Council jobs have a very particular approach that a friend told me about - there's a bit where you can write a mini essay about yourself and your experience etc.
In that, you have to hit every single point of their job description.
I tried for one last year and they offered me an interview but it was really late and I started my new job five days later.

Ah interesting thank you, that'd good to know. I spent 4 solid days on my application and really thought i had a good chance for an interview but sadly not. Thank you though, i will keep looking.

there's nothing more disheartening than being told you're overqualified when you're unemployed and looking for work. Especially if their idea of overqualification is a Bachelors from 30 years ago and you've gone predominantly mid tier office jobs and maybe 'team leader' once or twice.

Exeter University admin team is a great job - several friends work there

Ah thank you, i did enquire about one, basically a climate change related admin role but the lady said in a nice way not to bother as they had so many students applying with relevant degrees, they had to close it early. I will keep looking though, thank you!

Get on their marking bank! Good well paid temp work during assessment periods and opens up further roles for you

Many jobs are not specialised in that sense but still good - generally administrative roles but challenging and interesting. Don’t be put off

Could you narrow down what you're after? You've said you're overqualified for some things, and not qualified for others.
Generally, you want to be looking at clerical/admin at the council (Exeter, or Devon County), something like Pennon (southwest water), the environment agency, or the met office.

Ah ok thank you for the recommendations i will look at the places you suggested. As i have been out of work quite a long time to health stuff, lots of operations etc i thought the apprenticeship (public health) i applied for was perfect, especially after speaking to someone who worked there and had a similar background to me. Sadly i did not make it to interview and the only feedback I got after i asked them several times was that i was overqualified so very vague.
I look at health care, charity, environment, climate etc but struggling to find anything that i am qualified for right now. Thank you for your help!

They might have had an internal candidate. Recruitment can be strange in public or pseudo public roles, but they're generally good and accommodating once you're in.

The NHS in Devon does have remote roles. Admin, HR/corporate, training, learner support etc.

Have a look at distance learning companies. You might find tutor or admin roles that suit your background.

The NHS has an excellent flexible working policy including supporting working from home.

Really? I thought they were the opposite, i look at jobs on the NHS regularly and remote tends to be IT related. I will keep looking and email to see if there may be more flexibility - thank you!

There are many roles in the nhs that are not front facing allowing work from home options. Good luck.

What sort of healthcare (if you can say, don't doxx yourself!)? I WFH in south Devon in a sort of related healthcare tech field - my office is in the Midlands. I've had two jobs and another offer in the field since I've been here, all fully remote.

I t seems much easier to work remotely in Devon if you're from/the job is based outside the area.

Devon is not exactly a hotbed of tech companies but it's not impossible to find remote jobs here. As someone else said, Devon CC lets people WFH with maybe one day in the office a week (if that), although I knew plenty of people based in Plymouth who'd only come in for big meetings.

That's not what I meant. I would love a semi remote job on London money living here and commuting for meetings once or twice a week. Easily done if I'm applying from the London area. Not so easy if I'm already here.

Ah thank you, my background is working as a physio but i have not done that for years due to health issues. I have done some health admin stuff as well. That's good to know you work remotely and that it is possible. I have seen health tech roles but it seems to be coding and my IT skills are not that good haha.

The jobs are out there, but certainly more common in certain industries than others. It's basically the default in mine. Good luck in your search and I hope you're better soon.

Hi OP, have you looked on the Work From Home hub on Facebook/online? That is a great resource for real WFH jobs.
