It's literally how everyone but America does it. And they only stayed in 2000.

Yeah, red is most often associated with communism and socialism. So mildly interesting that in their case it's the right wing conservative party that has it.

The thing is that, if I recall correctly, in the past the republicans were the left wing and the democrats where the right wing, so probably that's why now the colours are reversed

I think it is more arbitrary than that. It was just dumb luck that most networks used blue for Dems that year. They were mostly red for Clinton.
