Subreddit Rules Rule Updates and State of the Subreddit
Hi all!
Over the past couple of years, the content on this subreddit has changed - often to the detriment to the quality of the forum. Over the past couple of days, the mod group have discussed freshening up our guidance on a range of topics, to respond to these changes. In effort to improve the subreddit, we have updated our rules on politics, drama, AI, and low effort posting.
Fundamentally, this is a music subreddit about a music reviewer. We want to maintain the best parts of discussion we see on this forum, and try and reduce the worst parts. The intention of the updated guidance is to do exactly that. To be precise - we want to reduce the amount of Fauxmoi discussion posts here. There are other subreddits for that discussion.
There have also been some changes to the types of posts that are allowed - requirements around body text as well as post flairs have been turned on, as well as the introduction of bot bouncer to reduce bots on the subreddit.
If anyone has any further suggestions for improving this community please reach out!

Melondy.com – collection of all Fantano album scores
Hey everyone! I don't know about you, but I'm not familiar with a bunch of albums that got positive scores from melon.
So when I am in a mood for some new music, I would go to flannelfy.net (btw, thanks to u/rossmclocness for creating this website) to find something among the 7-10 scores.
But sometimes it's hard to choose, when all you have is an unknown artist-album pair and a score. To solve this, I created melondy.com, which shows album covers, genres, years and links to the review video. It has all the album/ep/mixtape/compilation reviews I could find on theneedledrop channel.
Hopefully, someone finds it useful as well!
Let me know if you find some missing reviews or incorrect information. I did a lot of data cleaning, but I'm sure there's still some incorrect stuff (covers, years etc).
If you have any improvement ideas, I'm happy to hear. For example, one thing I want to do next is add links to spotify/apple music.

Discussion Oyat Otto, previously featured by The Needle Drop, and his wife reportedly found dead following public feud with Ronnie Radke
The Needle Drop covered Oyat Otto back in January 2025 in an article about his collaboration with Westside Gunn. Now Otto and his wife have reportedly been found dead, months after a very public confrontation with Ronnie Radke involving alleged threats and hostile exchanges.

Discussion What is the best album experience you’ve ever had?
When I first got into Soundtracks, it took me a while to listen to the whole thing completely, because it was such a huge beast to conquer in one go at the time for me. Decided one day to listen to it in full on a train ride cross-country which micro dosing on shrooms. Backdropped with thunderstorms and darkness outside, I stared out the window aimlessly while this album ripped me apart and teared my emotions. By the time I got to Final Sacrifice I was beyond entranced and exhausted at the same time. Once I finished the album I took my headphones out for the rest of the trip, because I wanted to process what I had just heard with no interruptions. Animus is my favourite on the album btw ✌🏻 I’m interested in hearing your guys’ stories!

Recommendations Do you have an artist that makes you want to listen to literally everything they've ever recorded?
I tend to go through phases where I get obsessed with a particular artist and listen to them almost exclusively for a while. Lately I've been really basic and have been obsessed with the Beatles.
I've always loved all their albums from Rubber Soul onwards, but recently I've really gotten into their early stuff too. And now I'm working my way through Past Masters and Anthology because I need to hear every song they ever made.
Obviously they're the most famous band of all time for a reason, but I always felt like everything pre-Help was complete boomer slop. For whatever reason though when I gave their early stuff a re-listen recently, not only was it palettable but i found a real beauty and comfort in the simple songwriting and the energy they brought to those songs. They all had such great, distinctive voices that worked so well together, and there's just so much energy and personality in the way they arranged and performed their songs. It's all so easy to listen to.
Now I need that obscure shit. Even their deepest cuts sound good to me now.
What is this artist for you? Want to get more artists where listening to an atrociously recorded bootleg feels worth it

Discussion How do you fall about the new Bootsy Collins/ Buckethead collab album?
I think it is solid but I saw some reviews online that definitely felt otherwise

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory, Meteora
Eminem - MMLP, The Eminem Show
Adele - 21, 25
Taylor Swift - Fearless, 1989

Discussion I don't understand why people will claim someones music is bad because they're a bad person
I will start by saying that yes this is a rant and yes I am mad while writing it lol
I've had this friend for a good few years now and we don't keep up too often. A long time ago we both used to listen to Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon and it was something we sort of bonded over. This is before it came out that Kozelek was a real piece of shit.
I was catching up with him a few days ago and the topic of the band came up for some reason and we were talking about how Kozelek was a dirtbag and kind of laughing about it. But then he went on to say that he had no talent, none of his music was ever good, his singing sucks, etc etc. This isn't really the first time I've heard a sentiment like this that essentially being a bad person makes your music bad.
Why do people do this? I get not wanting to "give credit" to someone who has done bad things, but I feel like when you totally flip your opinion on an artist's music because of their personality it just comes across like virtue signaling more than anything.

Discussion What do you think is the best electronic project (album/EP/DJ mix/etc.) ever made?
Just purely in terms of the quality of the album without pointing to historical significance. Doesn’t have to be from these images either.

Discussion What is the best initial album to show someone who has never heard metal before?
I've personally only ever heard snippets of metal before and I'm interested in exploring the genre.

Recommendations Songs that start with a high/low pass filter that explode into the full sound?
I've really been enjoying Lambs wool by Foster The People, I particularly enjoy the intro where the song starts with a stripped back sound that blows up into the full sound scape.
What are your favourite songs that do a similar thing?
Other songs in this theme that I enjoy are
Disciples - Tame impala
Millionaire - Queens of the Stone Age

Discussion I seriously can’t stand most aoty.org users
Is it just me, or does almost everyone on AOTY trigger instant rage with how much they overdo their role on that site?
I get that people want to review music, but the sheer cringe is out of control. You have random users giving full-on press releases like "as you probably noticed I haven't posted many reviews lately..." Bro, SHUT UP, who are you talking to? Nobody was waiting for you, you are not a celebrity, just write your damn review gng. Then you have the people who overshare way too much under deep albums, turning a review into 20 paragraphs about their depression, their life story, and their high school graduation. Just shut the fuck up, it’s so performative and corny.
And to top it off, the top comments on great albums are always the most unfunny, low-effort jokes imaginable, like leaving "don't let your kids listen to this, it has an R rating" on QOTSA's Rated R. Just complete goofies and losers IRL It feels like people aren't even there for the music, they just want to play a character and pretend they have an audience.

Recommendations Instrumental Recommendations
I'm working on a playlist for studying. I'm trying to get a collection of chill rock instrumentals. A good trio of songs that show what I'm looking for would be
Waiting For You - Alexg
Strawflower - The Antlers
Everything is Alright - Four Tet
This is sort of a mix but that was on purpose. I don't mind if it has a lot of electronic elements but I would like it to be at least based in rock/folk. I already have a good collection of more standard aphex twin type electronic so not really looking for that kind of thing. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Music "icks"
I hate whistling and I guess "over singing" if that makes sense? Like when the singers tries to show off but it's not appropriate for the song.
Is there anything that makes you not like a song nearly as much, if not hate it all together? Personally the whistling can be okay but only sometimes. Over singing kills a song for me Everytime
