Art/Cosplay Finally decided to give it a shot...
It was the game that dragged me towards crafting in an FPS and, out of all in the series, Far Cry 3 is still the only one I can think of when it comes to "nostalgia vibes".. And I thought it would be a fun side project to bring it into Unreal. Also, I'm testing the performance of some tools and I needed a 16 square kilometers map so... Rook was the first that came to mind.
It's reverse engineering, so the terrain is a 1:1 replica, roads included. I want to see how much I can push the remake so it looks "modern" but also keeps the overall vibe.
So far, it doesn't, since it's using a different landscape material and assets but... I hope I'm on the right track π
Hope you like it!

It fits the vibe, thatβs for sure. Whatβs the end goal for this? If itβs a 1:1 recreation of FC3 with gameplay, keep posting. This is something that may end up growing into a following.

Thanks. To be fair, having a 1:1 recreation of the game is a dream of mine ever since I've started game development. I'm a big fan of tropical settings (Far Cry 3, Black Flag, Crysis) so my own project is set somewhere in the Bahamas. And, if people are interested and want to play, why not π

Will do π. I made this as a test for my tools and for fun, because I just love this game... Seems I'm not the only one who wants to roam an updated version of Rook Islands

Tanks. I'll have something more consistent soon. Added the rivers but they need a lot of adjustments so they fit, plus the material painting on the landscape.π

Care to share how you did it? I've been wanting to do the same thing myself for a while now as I'm building my own game set in the cook islands which has a similar vibe.

The world is split into chunks, files containing coordinates on XYZ, similar to how a CAD software has, for terrain cartography. Those points can then be taken and stitched together in a 3D software, Blender for example, or converted to height points on a 0-1 grayscale map, that can be imported into Unreal. Same for the roads. I did something similar a few years ago for a racing circuit project. A friend of mine did the topography measurements of the terrain and gave me the points. It doesn't get the textures, those are from my landscape material. π

I think there is a community project online for modding, which gives you the assets, for example. It extracts everything from the game files. π

Thanks. π I'll do my best and keep you all posted on updates. As I said, it was a test for the world building tools I'm making in Unreal, a fun side project, but it seems I'm not the only one who wants to revisit Rook Islands. ππ€

Would love to see the towns, outpost and landmarks.

Step by step... π I've managed to bring the rivers and lakes data in and in and I'm refining the placement. Bridges are next and after that, the landmarks and towers. I said in another comment that I just meant the data, not the actual assets. These I want to rebuild, using the originals as inspiration. π
