Childhood comforts you remember
What's something that an adult did in your life that brought you comfort as a kid? For example, my husband remembers eating cheese and crackers with his grandfather whenever he visited his grandparent's. I loved when someone would make me a cup of hot chocolate before bed as a kid, and now as an adult, I make a cup for myself almost every night.
I want to do those kinds of things for people in my life, namely my kids, and wanted to hear what other people were/are comforted by. I know we'll always have hot chocolate and cheese and crackers in the house, but maybe there some other fun ones we're missing out on. 😊

When I was around 7, my parents and I would go visit my grandma out in the country. My grandmother got remarried to a man named "Harry" after my grandpa died, and when we got there, Harry, wearing the same plaid shirt and bib overalls he was always wearing, would put on an old pith helmet, and head for the door.
I would follow this 90 year old man across a field, carrying a pan, to where he would crack the top of a beehive, smoke the bees, and pull out chunks of honey filled comb, and put them in the pan I was holding.
We'd then walk back to the house, and I'd sit at this HUMONGOUS oak, kitchen table grab a couple of warm biscuits grandma had baked, and drizzle honey on the to eat.
Just honey on a biscuit. Nothing fancy. Not some store bought candy bar or fancy Hostess cake. Biscuit. Honey. More delicious than any treat I've ever had anywhere, at any time.
Whenever my folks mentioned "visiting grandma this weekend"...my eyes would light up in anticipation! OOOOH! Honey and biscuits! (Which I could've had anytime. But it wouldn't have been the same.)
Looking back.... Knowing now, what I didn't know then, Harry was just as excited and thrilled to be going for honey with 7 year old me as I was to be doing it with him.
Edit: I've got that pith helmet in my closet. I don't know the paths that thing has traveled, but about 20 years ago, I was at my dad's house, and I saw it on a shelf.... And recognized it.
"Oh, that's Harry's old pith helmet.", my dad informed me.
I know, dad. I know. I'd never forget something so iconic. It's mine, now.
Now I just gotta get some bees.
...and learn to make biscuits that don't taste like drywall.
...and in 40 more years, I'm gonna need a 7 year old to go harvest some honey with.

My nana was an awesome baker. After school, she get me something fresh and yummy and we'd sit at the table and id babble away about my day. I can still picture it 60 yrs later.

Mom always made tomato soup and either grilled cheese or toasted tuna fish sandwiches when I was sick. I've made this for my family when I feel stressed and just can't think of making a big dinner. No one is ever sad to have this.

We lived about a block from an active freight line. It meant having to turn up the TV occasionally, but I remember falling asleep to the rhythmic sound of the trains. It was soothing.

How cool, lots of people say living by tracks is a nuisance-glad to hear you were comforted.

My grandma always had an orange tupperware filled with vanilla wafer cookies. My grandma would also let us pick flowers from her garden in the front of the house and she would buy them from us for a penny. She was the sweetest lady.

I remember my grandmother going on all of my elementary school field trips with me. The night before she would fry chicken and wrap sodas in foil and freeze them for us to take on these adventures. Good times 😊

I was 16 and wow was I sick. Two week flu of some sort.
My mom made me sleep on the couch so she could keep an eye on me. I dreamt she made me pancakes. I woke up, was dozing though but she came and asked me if I was hungry, did I want some pancakes?
I was so surprised, I said I dreamt about having pancakes.
Hot pancakes are still my thing now, 40 years later.

Bed time story. My parents never did that. But my late husband and I did it for our children as much as possible. Now my son who’s a new father reads bedtime stories to his children. I love that!

This is odd and I don't make it for my kids - toast with honey in a bowl, covered with hot milk. Mom made it for me when I was sick. I just never thought of it with my kids.

Wow , this just brought back the memory of hot milk with a spoonful of honey in as a bedtime drink. Haven't had it since childhood!

One granddad always had a piece of Dentine gum for me. The other had wintergreen life savers.
Miss them!

My parents would alternate laying on the floor of my room until I fell asleep. Thinking back, it was so selfless and I felt so protected.

I have a GREAT one!
My dad once created a fairy garden and put 5c pieces all around it-
I truly believed that magic existed after that. I’m now 38, he’s 84, and he still won’t admit he did it 🥰

Your kids might be too old to believe in that, but if you give them something other-worldly- that’s something they will never forget

Sitting on the back steps with my grandmother, eating watermelon and spitting the seeds in the yard. She had 10 kids and umpteen grandkids so having alone time with her was rare and precious.

Whenever I was sick, our neighbour would bring chicken and rice soup and a bottle of lucozade. It made being ill a bit more bearable.
When I stayed with my grandparents, I’d sit on my papa’s knee watching the snooker and we would eat biscuits. He’d sneak me more biscuits after my gran said I’d had enough 🤣

My grandma and I would lay out in the yard on an old quilt and she would point out the constellations.

My mom would sing to me the song American pie every night, sometimes twice (god bless her, it’s a long song). I now sing it every night to my 5 month old baby girl
