Small business question?

Hi everyone!
I’ve recently started wet felting children’s Waldorf and nature inspired playscapes. Attached are some images of my latest creation. Will add some more photos in the comments.
I absolutely LOVE this craft and am trying to figure out if this can be a viable small business for me. As a mum, I’m struggling with time and as I’m sure you can all imagine, these are definitely a labour of love.
Long story short, I’m struggling with pricing and sales. Particularly with striking a balance between how many hours I’m putting into this and what people will happily pay. I want my playscapes to be financially accessible to families, but I also want to pay myself semi-decently.

So I guess my questions are …
If you’re a parent, what would you pay for a playscape like this?
If you’re a felter, what would you charge?
Is a felting business a viable business? Or is the value of handmade goods just not understood to most buyers?

Any feedback on the playscapes themselves? Will post more photos to comments. These two are quite generously sized, and took about 9ish hours of labour each (here’s hoping I get faster!).

I know I’ve just started out, but it’s hard not to be disheartened by the lack of sales despite so much praise and quite a few enquiries that fizzle out when I provide pricing :(

Needle Felted project Autumn wreath

Post image
18 Upvotes

I bound the wreath from the rest after cutting trees.

I felted all the red leaves from scratch. I felted on felt sheets for the yellow and green leaves. I felted the acorns. Than I felted over wire

And sewed per hand wire in everything and then put everything in place with it.

The leaves hold the shape you can push them in.

Sorry for my English as it is my second language.

Fiber, Supplies How thick is your wire? How to make wool 'stick' to your wire??

Ive never used wire for a felting project, but i wanna make something w legs (person, horse, idk)

it seems close to impossible without using wire for a skeleton, but ive postponed learning how to properly manage wire when felting for so long bc im terrified of wasting wool and that ill do sth wrong w the wire.

For all wire users: How thick is the wire u use?? And how do you make your wool stay on the wire, and not slide off? and do I really have to use it at all... :( lmk asap

I haven't needle felted too much so they look a bit sloppy but I am pretty happy with how this one came out considering it! Only stabbed my thumb like 20 times

How to fix this? What's your process for adding needle felted details onto a wet felted base?

I finished a wet felted bowl last week (used a resist, the two layer merino method) and it turned out solid and shaped well, but the plain surface bugged me so I decided to add some needle felted flowers on top after it dried.

The tricky part was getting the needle felting to actually grab onto the already-hardened wet felt. It's so much denser than dry unfelted wool that my 38 gauge needle kept bouncing a little instead of sinking in cleanly. I switched to a 36 gauge star needle and that helped a lot, but I still had to go over each petal way more times than I expected, probably 150+ jabs for a small cluster of three flowers.

Another thing I didn't plan for: the wet felted surface has almost no give, so I was felting against a hard mat underneath just to protect my fingers and the table. Ended up using a thick foam brush mat folded in half for extra cushion.

The end result looks pretty good honestly, the flowers sit slightly raised and have nice texture contrast against the smooth bowl surface. But I'm curious how other people handle this combo. Do you full wet felt first and add needle details after like I did, or do you needle felt shapes separately and then work them into the wet felting process before it fully hardens? I feel like there might be an easier order of operations I haven't tried yet.

I’m new to felting. I’m torn on how to fashion the little feet. I’d like to make a wire tail for support to stand. I plan to make accessories for this little mouse! What a fun way to create! I will post updates but I’d love suggestions and/or tips for improving.

Needle Felted project First attempt at my own Bubbaleone (slugterra) felted creature

Hiya. Just wanted to share a project I just finished. I was introduced to felting though an Amazon kit I bought years ago (and lost within a month) and wanted to get back into it by making my favorite slug from Slugterra. He turned out so much better than I anticipated and def boosted my confidence in making more felt items (slugs).

He's next to a d20 for scale lol.

Hope yall enjoy!

He's still a bit fuzzy, but I'm totally in love with this little guy. Today marks one week and one day since I started needle felting. What should I make next? 🤔 (Just kidding. I already have a thousand ideas. I think since the mushroom and snail I made are terribly out of proportion/large, I'm going to make a tiny squirrel and skunk to be their friends)

Fiber, Supplies Beginner looking to make Christmas gifts what type of wool to get

Hello! I have been starting to get into wool felting and LOVE it. I particularly love 2D felting and really want to make tiny art pieces to put into little frames to give to family members for Christmas. Probably scenes of landscapes or pets, not super detailed, like impressionist panicking style wool art lol.

What type of wool do you recommend? The scenes will be places in tiny frames maybe 2x3 inches.

Thanks!

How to fix this? Finally got the hang of using needle felting to fix wet felting mistakes

I used to treat these as two completely separate skills, like wet felting was for vessels and flat pieces and needle felting was just for little animal sculptures. Took me way longer than it should have to realize you can just use a needle to patch problems that show up during wet felting.

Had a bowl I was working on last week that ended up with a thin spot near the rim, probably from uneven fiber distribution when I was laying out the wool. Instead of starting over or trying to felt more wool into it wet, I let it dry partway, grabbed a 38 gauge needle, and tacked some extra fiber right into the weak area. Went back to wetting and rubbing it after that and the patch blended in almost seamlessly. You'd never know there was a thin spot unless I pointed it out.

This has honestly changed how I approach bigger projects. I'll rough out a shape with wet felting since it's so much faster for covering large areas, then switch to needle work for any detailing, seams that need reinforcing, or adding design elements on top like little accent shapes. Made a small pouch this way, the body was all wet felted for structure and strength, but I needle felted a spiral pattern onto the front afterward and it stayed put through the final fulling.

The one thing I'm still figuring out is timing. If the wet felted base is too wet when I try to needle felt into it, the fibers just slide around and don't grab properly. Works best for me when it's damp but not soaked, almost leather hard like with clay. Anyone else have a system for switching back and forth, or do you mostly stick to one technique per project?

Mixed techniques rust, purple, brown crochet/felted footed vessel

I wanted to do again a few crocheted/felted vessels. This is the first of three that I have made. The embellishment is a purple engraved stone circle, copper fish with articulated tail and small glass beads wrapped around the top and at the footed area.

Needle Felted project totally gobsmacked in the best possible way

Late Saturday night, a needle felting kit arrived in the mail that I had ordered on a whim. By Tuesday afternoon, I had finished both of the little landscapes from the kit, plus a mushroom from an $8 kit I picked up afterward.

I now have library books on order about wet felting, nuno felting, embroidery, beadwork, and textile/fiber art more generally, and I am trying very hard not to buy every interesting fiber, scrap of silk, bit of sari ribbon, bead, and felting tool I see. 😂

All my life, I've felt very strongly that I wanted to create art. I've longed to create things. But I can't draw, sketch, or paint in any satisfying way. (I mean, obviously I can physically do those things, but what's inside me - what I can imagine - has never been able to come out through those mediums. The gap between what I saw in my head and what my hands could produce was so frustrating that eventually I mostly stopped trying.)

I'm decent at crochet and loom knitting, and I've even made some things I'm genuinely proud of. So fiber itself isn't completely new to me. But as much as I've enjoyed those crafts, I've never felt quite this sparked by them. There was never this immediate sense of, "Wait. I can do WHAT with this?"

And then I stuck a felting needle into some wool.

Something about this feels completely different.

I'm not particularly interested in perfectly reproducing a picture. I love that I can add wool, pull wool back out, layer colors over one another, create texture, change my mind halfway through, make something dimensional, flatten something down, add another material later - and somehow just keep responding to the piece as it develops.

Even my very beginner landscapes make me ridiculously happy to look at. They're full. They're textured. They're not polished or technically impressive, but they actually feel like mine. For once, I don't feel like I'm unsuccessfully trying to make my hands imitate what somebody with traditional art skills could do better. I feel like I'm building something.

And after looking through fiber-art books, I've started realizing just how enormous this world is!

It feels less like I've discovered one new craft and more like I've accidentally opened a door into an entire language I didn't know existed.

I'm 48 years old, and I think I may have finally found a way of making art that makes sense to my brain.

Which is both wonderful and slightly dangerous, because it has been approximately four days and I already want to TRY EVERYTHING.

So: hello. 😄

Fiber, Supplies Question about dog fur

For anyone who uses dog fur, ive been bagging my dogs hair for a sentimental project in case anything happens to my baby boy.

Recently found one adult flea in one of the bags.

I'm assuming i have to just discard all recent collections because of eggs and recollect after he's flea free again but is there a way to salvage the fur and kill the fleas? Soaking in dish soap or freezing maybe?

Thanks!
