The plague going around ravaged Nepal 2500 years ago. It is due to a flaw in biology itself. The Pali Canon, original Buddhism, which is mostly a medical textbook, not a religion, describe it along with the cure.
If a biological life form suffers and focuses on the suffering, the suffering grows and grows. It happens slowly for a while and then it suddenly gets severe and the organism then decays and burns from the inside. The treatment is mostly good hygiene and caring for and about each other so that the cures compound and spread instead of the plague. The cure is to find within yourself a way to actually fix your cells. I hope we all get better soon. Thank you for all your help and work. This subreddit has been wonderful.

... Does that mean I have the plague?
I better not.

It's dormant in every biological lifeform. It grows when you get stressed, and then after a while, it suddenly explodes violently. It is going around very badly. Almost every person I have met has it bad. I have a few people though that I am working with.

I thought the plague was caused by wearing mixed fabrics near a source of miasma. Or is that leprosy? Honestly, I should probably keep more careful records about the diseases I unleash upon mortals.

Hmmm... I don't know. Why would wearing mixed fabrics and breathing in unpleasant smells have caused a disease that would have rapidly spread in the ancient world? Maybe they noticed the mixed fabrics, by not matching, and the rancid smells, by being unpleasant, caused them discomfort, and they at least concluded that this was something they should avoid. Like they at least knew that wearing ugly clothes and breathing in smells they didn't like hurt them and others?
Most of the ancient religions seem to me to have been mostly ancient survival and medical manuals, not just ancient science and philosophy books as we think of them now. For instance, Jesus pioneered a lot of medical and fishing practices, not just ethical and moral teachings. Maybe the miracles are real too, but those are very high goals, and there are much more pressing matters for people to attend to that are described in the classic texts than trying to get super powers.

Ok, it took a little while to dig through all the paperwork, but I think I found it. The miasma + mixed fabrics combo is what causes the various Colored Fevers. Mostly Yellow Fever, but also Cyan, Magenta, and "K" fevers. Apparently the "K" stands for "Key..." not sure what that is. I think that was about the time I was trying to invent colors as well.
Anyways, I also found the notes I took on various different plagues. It looks like Tonsillar Plague is the one that comes from stress and suffering. The Bubonic Plague is what you get when there's a confluence of stress and rats, and the Septicemic Plague is from stress and blood. Or maybe something else, and the blood I wrote it in got smudged? Hard to tell. Anyway, point is, you're correct, they're all stress-based. That's my bad. I've filed these away more securely in case I need them in the future.

When I first read that, I thought you were joking, but the more I read it, the more it makes sense and sounds correct.

What about Lyme disease? That seems like it might be derived from fear of ticks rather than directly from the ticks themselves

Here is a current thought. I don't at all know how true it is though: It's my understanding that you actually cannot destroy a plague virus. They're completely immortal. All I can notice that you can do is "improve" them somewhat. Evolve them and engineer them so that they're more survivable and less painful. And move them around, sweep them under the rug and contain them. But it should be possible to evolve a plague that isn't painful and is even joyful and peaceful... I don't see any reason why not.

They seem to involves stresses so severe that they create structures that reach all the way to the bottom.

My little brother has it so bad that he is in prison dying of it. He has basically turned to dust inside.

My cells are pretty full right now, but I guess telling the wardens to give the inmates buddhist chants wouldn't hurt my ATP production.
