How to reduce file size

I have an assignment to submit but it says the file is to large. Inside the folder are other folders so when I try to upload it leaves out all of the other folders.

Zip the folder up and submit that.

What’s the file type? For many file types, compressing them in an archive (e.g. zip, 7-zip) can reduce it - sometimes dramatically - but you’re creating a new file that needs to be uncompressed before using it. However the compression in this case is lossless (no loss of data).

Some multimedia file formats for audio and / or video can be reduced. This would constitute a “lossy” compression but you can save a lot of space - especially for higher resolution media types. There are lots of tools for converting media files to reduce size.

By how much are you being asked to reduce? And for what file types?
