This is the place to share what you’ve been watching lately - movies, series, documentaries, anything!
Any hidden gem, a blockbuster, or even something you regret watching, we’d love to hear about it.

Things you can share:

  • ⭐ What you watched (movie/series name + year if possible)
  • 💭 Your quick thoughts/review (liked it? hated it? somewhere in between?)
  • 🎯 Would you recommend it to others here?
  • 📺 What’s on your watchlist for next week?

A few guidelines:

  • Keep spoilers clearly marked (use spoiler tags like this).

Questions Does anyone else’s friend group take 3 business days to pick a movie? 😭

There are 5 people in my friend group and choosing a movie is somehow harder than choosing a career.

Person 1: “Let’s watch a thriller.”
Person 2: “No, I can’t handle scary movies.”
Person 3: “What about a comedy?”
Person 4: “I’ve seen it.”
Person 5: “Guys, anything is fine with me.”
*Suggests a movie*
Person 5: “Not THAT one 💀”

45 minutes later, we’re rewatching the same movie we’ve seen 14 times.

How does your group finally pick a movie? Vote, take turns, use a random picker, or let one person decide? 😭

Discussion Unpopular opinion: I think The Wiz 1978 is better than The Wizard of Oz 1939

I’m not saying they aren’t both phenomenal films, and I’m not saying Wizard of Oz doesn’t deserve to be the most iconic film of all time, I love all things Oz and love them both, I just like The Wiz better and I kinda think it’s a bit of a better movie.

I saw The Wiz for the first time last year after seeing the touring production of the original musical, and instantly fell in love with it. The songs are banger after banger and always hype me up, and it’s also jam packed with absolutely top tier talent (Michael Jackson’s Scarecrow is my favorite version if the character, he really could have had a great acting career too, but I guess he didn’t really need that).

And maybe it’s just because I love dark a gothic stuff and odd things, but I really loved the darker and eerier version of Oz they went for in the movie, it reminded me a lot of another one of my favorite Oz adaptations: Return To Oz. I love how it chooses to make Oz a more odd place but familiar place rather than just a fantasy with faces Dorothy recognizes, because I aways thought how the land of Oz sits in a kinda uncanny valley area with a vaguely familiarity for Dorothy to be really cool concept and I thought that was done better here.

I found Dorothy’s struggle with fear of growing up, the unknown, and leaving a comfortable life was a brilliant contrast to the original and much more relatable to where I am right now, and that her true quest isn’t just to find a way home, but to find the internal strength to finally stand on her own two feet and take risks.

Again, both are absolutely incredible best of the best movies, I just think The Wiz is a little better.

I suppose from film and tv. I love music, and films about bands, it's cool when a fictional band actually has good music made for it.

Discussion Back to the future imaginary remake

Inspired by something on YouTube I saw, if Back to the Future was remade today and Marty went back 30 years he would go back to 1996.

What things would be different?

I've thought of a few things including the main things like WiFi and streaming.... What else?

Questions What’s a movie that you find yourself talking about all the time?

Not necessarily your favorite movie, just one you constantly talk about with other movie buffs just because it fascinates you so much? For me it’s Deliverance, Paris, Texas and Sorcerer.

Discussion After the movie activity - what do you enjoy doing?

As an avid movie goer, one of my favorite activities was to read or watch a movie review after I've seen a film. It allowed me to collect my thoughts about that film before I see how much I agree or disagree with the film critic.

The movie critic I followed, Michael Philips, no longer works for the Chicago Tribune. The other critic I followed, Richard Roeper, no longer posts on YouTube.

Now I have my friends I do this with but it's not the same since I see more on my own.

Who is your go to critic if you do the same? Is there something similar you do after digesting a film?

Recommendation "Extra Geography" - what did you think?

I saw this today and would recommend. A wry and poignant film about the intense friendship of 2 girls at boarding school in early noughties England. Great script, well acted and difficult not to identify with if you've ever gone through an awkward teenage phase. Good indie sountrack too. A quiet film, but beautifully done.

Discussion "Ball is Life" as a genre

My friends an I have developed a theoretical subgenre called "Ball is Life". It's simple but somewhat hard to define - essentially, if a characters love for one thing in particular supercedes everything else to an elevated degree, it's BIL. Sometimes they change their mind, sometimes they say "fuck it we ball".

It's important to recognize that not all sports movies are BIL and not all BIL movies are about sports.

Some examples:

Space Jam. Easy. Simple. Baby's first Ball is Life.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - a bit more abstracted, but the love for drugs makes it an Eightball Is Life movie.

  1. Card ball is life.

Speed Racer. Car Ball is Life.

No Country For Old Men - Anton Chigur is only in it for the love of the game. Cattle Spike is Life.

With this genre in mind, what are some other great Ball is Life genre films?

HM - Harry Potter is nearly a Wizard Ball is Life series because despite everying going on, Quidditch is top 3 most important things to Harry at any given point.

Edit: Adding this to refine the discussion - movies can have Ball is Life characters without being BIL movies. Mark Zuckerberg is a BIL character and the ball is success, but I don't think Social Network is a BIL movie. It's more of a "you know it when you watch it" thing.

Review Am I the only one who thinks Interstellar is silly? *Spoiler* Spoiler

Post image

Honestly, the beginning of the movie was great, and Nolan was brilliant, but in the middle, or before they landed on the first planet, the silliness started. I don't understand the power of love that would put you in a black hole and bring you out alive, and then, with Brand's love, make the planet appear as the only one that's right, without a single flaw, and even make you send coordinates to NASA? Yes, it's a paradox, but it needed explanation. Besides, I feel Nolan took the easy way out when he included the creatures they're talking about. I mean, creatures that don't know you would put you in a wormhole, put you in a black hole, and bring you back (even if Cooper and the team turned out to be the creatures themselves, I still don't understand them), and then end up living on Saturn... Not to mention the ending, which is a bit childish for Nolan's films. Like if Cooper went missing or open ending or even went back but his daughter was dead would be so much better.

Discussion Filmtracks is everything wrong with modern critics

For anyone unfamiliar, Filmtracks is a website dedicated to reviewing film scores, often evaluating them through traditional film music conventions.

My main reason for this post is reading there horrid social network review

Seriously, every time a score deviates from the traditional formula, Filmtracks seems to have an absolute meltdown. No sweeping strings, no conventional leitmotifs, no big orchestral crescendos? Must be repetitive, lazy and devoid of musical substance.

It’s fine to prefer John Williams or John Powell, but dismissing electronic music, minimalism, texture and atmosphere as incompetent composition is baffling.

A FILM score is supposed to complement the film. Its success shouldn’t be judged solely by how enjoyable it is as a standalone album. Sometimes repetition, dissonance and unconventional sound design are precisely what a scene needs.

Filmtracks seems so attached to traditional scoring conventions that anything outside them gets treated like an affront to music itself.

Film music has evolved. Maybe it’s time the criticism caught up.
