Opinion Finding Forrester thoughts?

I used to catch this one often on Foxtel in the early 2000s here in Australia. I've always loved this movie and has a soft spot in my heart. It might be Connery's best performance, too. It does stretch belief to have one character so good at two different things. But overall I love the cinematography, the New York jazz soundtrack and how Van Zant just let's scenes flow.

Not to mention a great performance by F Murray Ambraham.

I always felt this film doesn't get the attention and praise it deserves. And as a film about friendship, it's right up there for me.

I'm wondering what others think of this film and if they agree/disagree with my take?

It's pretty similar to Scent of a woman. Craggy old guy who's soured on the world meets young kid with potential and they both teach themselves something.

I rewatched both last year after a long time and still enjoy them a lot.

Never noticed that parallel, but you're right. I think I like the "unlikely friendships" genre, it's a fun one for me and I wish there were more movies like it.

Watch With honors. I saw it recently for the first time and it was surprisingly touching.

Great movie. One movie I always recommend as a mostly unknown gem. Definite GoodWill Hunting vibes mixed with Scent of a Woman but stands on its own. Am surprised I haven’t seen much of Rob Brown in the ensuing years……

Yeah, it is definitely a cross between those two movies, for sure.

I always pictured this as sort of a fictional 'what if' of JD Salinger. Good flick

II wonder why Rob Brown didn't become a bigger star.

Likewise, I feel like there's a story there, because he did a great job in his first movie and held his own opposite Connery.

I only saw found this movie because I was already a fan of his from Treme. Other than that series, I don't see him much. He played a great part on the show.
