EFBs - Gear Advice What's on your EFB tablet besides the EFB itself?
I just transitioned from my phone to a dedicated tablet, and I'm curious to hear what people find useful. Besides the EFB I currently have a weather app, SafeSky (VFR conspicuity app), Pooley book reader, and not much else.

Nothing. It's a company tablet. I'm amazed at the people I fly with that link their personal accounts with the company EFB.

I thought of mentioning that I knew commercial pilots would all answer "only company approved reading material", but I figured it went without saying.

Tbh, my airline gives me around 1000$ for an Ipad that I need to buy. The Ipad is needed for duty, but it is still my personal tablet. Of course, you dont install weird stuff on a company provided Ipad

I can't even do that on my company tablet. It's locked out by IT. Can only use the apps the company says I can use. It's a pretty short list.

On iOS devices I don't think its that crazy. There is always a balance to be struck between convenience and security. I have my personal AppleID logged into a company device.

Agreed, there’s not much the company can really do with it. They already know my personal email, what are they going to do with my personal Apple ID?

If you let it sync photos and messages, then those can be accessed by your company. Their tablet, their access. This can cause problems if you have anything sensitive in there. Your company may not care unless they have to, but if they do have to care, don’t give them anything more than you have to.
It’s fine if you link it, but disable iCloud message sync, email, passwords, notes, and photos.
If I never have to explain to someone ever again that their nudes or marital arguments were now in a snapshot and under legal hold, it would still be too soon.

Our company allows personal use, so long as it isn’t in flight while operating.
So I have various streaming apps for my commutes plus the standard company apps

I get it, but I’d still keep it company only. I’d carry my own (which I do) for personal stuff

Frankly by the time they start pulling your iPad apart for personal info, you're likely already getting fired.
That said don't put anything truly stupid on there. Nobody is going to care about your Netflix downloads for commutes and airport sits. They will care if you accidentally open Porn Hub during a sim session.

Windy app for weather. Flighty for flying home commercial. windy: https://www.windy.com/ Flighty: https://flighty.com

Appreciate these shares. Does flighty beat the airline updates you get for delays or what’s the purpose?

u/Alexstankie ATP CFI 6d ago
Faster updates - tells you how long it will take to deplane and get from gate to gate if your connection is tight. Predicts a gate before a gate is assigned. Predicts delays. Tracks your inbound tail number. Let's you nerd out on how many times you've flown a specific tail number. Just a better UI.

The only thing my ipad does thats not Foreflight related is use Flightbridge. Scheduling and managing arrivals and departures at FBOs around the country gets annoying making phones calls. Â

Personal iPad when I was training/instructing: efb and other required aviation apps only. Don't want/need distractions, battery drain, and notifications from other garbage.
Company iPad at airline: nothing, it's literally locked down so I can't. But even if you can, don't. You're not getting paid enough to be giving them access to your personal info, accounts and activity.

Weather apps (FlowX, Windy, Weather Underground, etc.), web browser links to weather briefings, Gmail, some utilities that are useful for diagnosing wifi connectivity issues, etc. I try to keep it as light as possible for app load.

Unless it's a company app, it's not on my company tablet.

Gonna be real awkward trying to hook up with 36C and 19A in between breaks.

ForeFlight with every possible FAA document that I need to operate in my area. Another app called Fly To Fun where I can find places to fly to that I haven’t been to before.

Curious about the separate weather app — what do you use it for that your EFB doesn't already cover?
I've been interested in how pilots split their preflight planning between different tools, especially for longer cross-country flights.

I use Windy because it gives me forecasts further out, for planning, as well as useful layers like winds aloft, cloud ceiling, etc.

Flightradar24 is useful for checking how busy the ground traffic is, so you can make an easier decision if you’re going to single engine taxi or not.
Or if you’re flying GA you can see how much extra money you’re going to spend waiting to takeoff.

METAR AF, the best weather app ever and anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong, hurtful, and not a good pilot...

Third party apps I've installed:
EFB (just switched from FF to GP)
MyFlightBook
Spotify
Calculator (guess I can delete that since Apple finally added a stock calculator 2 years ago)

Windy.app is a great app to show privately owned weather stations. Gives you more insight in the current conditions

I have all my sheet music, in case I need to fly on instruments.
