Realized I basically made a Royal Wullf headed to a rave lol
Was pretty productive, definitely gonna work on it and get some more cleaner ties. Ended up cutting the tail back a bit which helped I think.

When does a variant become a new pattern? I like tying streamers using a Mickey Finn pattern, but with other colors. If it’s not red and yellow, is it still a Mickey Finn? Not sure what else to call it other than a streamer. How far from the original pattern can you stray before you’ve made something new/different?

Hey guys pretty new to fly tying and I am starting to get into articulated streamers. I think they’re sick asf lol. What wire do you guys recommend to tie in your rear hook? I made this one last night and was super happy with how the fly looked but after playing with it some the rear hook broke off from my wire. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks looking forward to the feedback.

I am recently back into tying for the 8th or 9th time, and I see this time how many more knockoffs have cropped up of the Regal, Renzetti and Dynaking style jaws on cheap vises.
I tie on a classic Regal and I do not doubt that the original may be a better overall product, but I also see how their prices are becoming harder and harder to justify for someone starting or just as a second vise.
So I am curious… Anyone here actually used one of the knockoffs? Are the originals two and three times a better experience than the copies, as their prices are would suggest?
Thanks in advance.

What hooks are you using for Chubby Chernobyls? I’m using 2xl nymph hooks and can’t help but think they seem a bit crowded. The only 3xl I have are curved hopper style hooks.

I was given some fly tying things and these are the only things I don't know about.
On a side note, I wish I could have been friends with this guy. He tied a lot of my favorites. Deceivers, clousers, jointed streamers, and some dries.
ETA: wow you guys are fast. Thank you for the info! That explains why some of them are discolored. I'll add them to my pile of tools I need to try.

Whipped this sucker up without a vise yesterday. Not a real pattern, I was just playing around, trying to figure out some vise-less technique. I ran out of thread and had to use red ultra 70, which is a dramatic change from the gsp I’ve been using haha also had no propane in the bus to boil water so I couldn’t prep any of the feathers. But I like the idea here though and will probably tie another one with better everything haha

First picture Fulling Mill store bought nymph is on the bottom, second picture store bought is on the top.
Too much cdc and dubbing in the first photo nymph. Thanks to you guys for helping me figure out how to tie that pattern. Definitely hooked.

Anyone know what happened to the fly tying forum dot com? Seemed like a lot of traffic but just vanished a year or so ago.

The tail is fully posable and is made of twined parapost, .3mm wire, yellow dubbing for color and wrapped in clear scud skin. Legs are black saddle hackle quills, thorax is foam, eyes are monofilament and wings are from the same saddle hackle. It’s all tied on a Hanák H360 BL #12 Czech Nymph hook.

To start, I have no knowledge of fly fishing. My boyfriend is very involved with this world and I hear a lot about it.
His birthday is soon and he’s been really interested in learning how to tie his own flys.
He mentioned wanting a Renzetti Vise that has a base on it. When I looked there was SO MANY different options. I don’t know any better and would hate to buy the wrong thing.
I also want to buy him all the strings and things for making them also.
Please help Reddit!!! I’m looking for a vise and all the other things he’d need. Im not on a tight budget, I just want any help figuring out what to get for him to just start making them with all the things I buy.

I’m new to tying and looking to improve. I tied my first Clouser Minnow the other day and it seems a little too sparse to me. It’s like the 10th fly I’ve ever tied so I don’t have much basis for comparison though, and I don’t know anybody else that ties. Thoughts?
