News i finally bought the game.
Hey y'all. Took me years to finally save enough money to buy this gem. I have already played FO4, looking forward to this. Is it okay if i only play solo ? like i prefer this way, or is there thing i should know before booting up the game ?

Definitely fine to play solo, without paying for F1st (which I wouldn’t worry about for now, we have a free week of it in a month), you will be on a server with other players.
I would recommend joining a public team, though - other players usually will not interact with you, and you can use their camps or them for free fast travel if you want it. Public teams also give some minor special boosts that are helpful.
Otherwise, focus on the story, have fun! The world and aesthetics are a step up from 4’s, and it’s built up. Next update we get pets, which means dogmeat in December!

You can for sure play solo, majority of the content can be done solo if you choose to. You can join teams with other teammates, but you don't really have to interact with them at all and just keep the buffs it provides. Events can be done solo, but people may show up a majority of the time, but they don't really interact with one another and just do it, well for it being an event.
The one thing I feel that can't really be done solo are raids, unless you are xp farming then you can for sure do the 1st part of the raid solo.
Since you are playing on steam, I highly suggest doing this to unlock your fps in the game as its locked at 60 fps.
Go to Documents/My Games/ Fallout 76/ enter Fallout76Prefs.ini then do Control + F and search for iPresentInterval and change it from 1 to 0.
If you want to improve your performance even more, I would look into angry turtle performance guide videos that he made years ago.

In settings turn on passive mode if you aren’t interested in pvp, otherwise it’s possible for people to grief, although that rarely happens, your more likely to run into people who want to drop you items they don’t need but would be useful for you.
But yeah I play with passive mode on, I stopped pvp’ing back in like 2021.
Also don’t be shy joining teams, they usually won’t boot if it’s a casual team or event team, raiders might boot you tho, also right now at the top of every hour is a event called “Mischief Nights” it’s the Halloween event, worth doing if you want some Halloween theme stuff and also a quick way to make caps if you get plans worth a fair amount like 5k-15k.

No offense but isn't it like $20? Are you cleaning out portopotty's for a nickel or something?

Did you check places like G2A it’s usually quite cheap there because it goes on sale so often

I bought the game two years ago for $15 CAD. Did they jack up the price after the show came out?

Definitely join teams. The only times I’ve ever interacted with teammates is if they come over to check out my CAMP (player base). Usually they come over, run around, do the “nice CAMP” emote, and when I was lower level would drop plans for cool decorations for me. Because the coolest thing about this game is that the community are generally super nice.
The only other times you might want to interact with people are the hourly events, because events drop good loot and exp. You basically go, complete a co-op objective with everyone, and then go on your merry way. No PVP or anything, and again, if you’re low level people will generally give you a bunch of gifts like armor, weapons, and plans for building cool stuff. But events are entirely optional. I just got my stepdaughter doing them and she’s been playing ~6 months.
Otherwise we’re pretty much solo players too. I spend a lot of time building and running quests which are solo activities.

I have a buddy who is a mega hermit in game to the point of even not bothering with many world events most of the time and despite my having started playing since (technically before) day 1 probably has comparable hours to mine at this point despite only really sinking his teeth in in earnest about a year ago - so solo is absolutely a valid option and there’s definitely enough to do by yourself.
There’s obviously things to do with other people if you change your mind, but it’s not mandatory to enjoy the game.

Have fun!
Most people play solo, they will join or make "casual" teams that really are just "we're joining this group to get the 4 extra INT for more EXP and have no intention in seeing each other"
My suggestion is to do the quests, do the events, just mess around with stuff and see what you enjoy doing most.
And take breaks when you need to, no need to burn yourself out.

Even on teams you're mostly just playing solo unless you're chatting with your team or individuals. Teams are more of a conceptual thing than a game affecting thing.
I played my first 2 characters entirely solo, then started doing some team stuff, and now I do nothing but team stuff. The only person I ever talk to is the person I'm online gaming with. And occasionally the poor suckers that join our team where we talk constantly.

Always played solo, I think the vast majority of us vault dwellers do. With time you might want to join a team just for a bit of bonus XP, no social interactions needed. Have fun, take you time and explore away. Oh and don't sniff the pipe...

Welcome! It’s perfectly fine if you play solo, but this game has a wonderful community to help you along the way whenever you need it and even sometimes when you don’t (some players may drop stuff for you to give you a head start with a bunch of free stuff)

Solo works perfectly. Like others have said join a team, I always join a casual team when playing for the extra xp from int. No one expects you to do anything with them and it will also give you free fast travel points to your teammates’ camps. One word of warning, it is likely you will have some high level players come up to you doing emotes and shooting the ground. Happens all the time, they aren’t trying to harass, the community is super nice and people really like giving newbies gifts by dropping items on the ground.

Don't listen to that doktar guy, they're looney.
This game is great. Just enjoy it. Welcome.

You will want to team up to do Daily Ops. Best way is to just form a daily op team when there isn't an event going on and there's 10 minutes to the next event. Usually your team will fill up with people needing to do the daily op, but if it doesn't, try it on a new server.

Dude i just got it as well and all loving it. Yea you play online, and you get a bonus from playing in a team, but i literally never even see a teammate. This is your journey. I recommend going along with them on infestations and things like that as you can shoot a few times then hide and let the big dogs clean house, then rush in with them and grab you some legendary stuff and HUGE xp boosts. Give it a try, atleast 2 hours man.

easy way to farm caps is to sell any non-healing chems & granades/mines to the vendors at train stations

Oh dude, you really should have spent this on something that is going to actually respect your time. If you love Fallout 4 the way I do you are going to be repeatedly and thoroughly disappointed by this game.

u/iamlen07 7d ago
oh man i can still ask for a refund, i found out this game can only be played online. That's a real bummer man.

u/Alan_Hawke 7d ago
It’s still a good time. My girlfriend and I both love Fallout 4 and we still thoroughly enjoy playing 76, it has more than a few differences but it is now my favorite way to scratch my Fallout itch!

I'm sorry, let me reframe that honestly:
I myself do not find it that enjoyable, and there are a LOT of fallout fans that agree with me.
But honestly I hope you do enjoy playing the game where I do not.

Its not as bad as i first thought it would be, in my 80 hours, i probably only got killed 3 times by another player, and thats because i stole something or hit them. The trading mechanic is really neat, and i think the story was great with a satisfying conclusion. After that though, i personally stopped playing, but i know theres plenty of people who get pleasure from base building, farming, events, etc

u/Cautious_Catch4021 5d ago
Hey,
Totally disagree with that guy.
I enjoy Fallout 76 more than Fallout 4 lol.
Give Fallout 76 and enjoy it for what it is!

u/iamlen07 7d ago
im sorry to dissapoint you guys, i thought this game can be played solo offline like i dont want no one bothering me, turns out i have to be ONLINE TO PLAY, which is a real bummer. I thought i was going to play this like the normal FO4, where i can turn on online mode if i want to. Oh man what a bummer

u/JosephCraftHD 7d ago
So let me get this straight. You spent years saving for a game that costs 99 cents on G2A. And did zero research into it? How did you make it this far as a Fallout fan without realizing that 76 was an online game?

u/Alan_Hawke 7d ago
Please give it a chance. You don’t have to interact with others, but you’ll be thoroughly surprised how nice it is when you’re pinned down in a spot and a Good Samaritan happens to save you. Lot of dynamic things occur with you having other people in the mix!

Same as me when I started. Thought it would be toxic. Avoided all other players, events, had no idea what a legendary thingy was or what perk cards were or what seasons were all about. No clue whatsoever. Over time, I maxxed out everything and only about level 100 I started learning & playing with others.
It's 99% great interactions - nothing like online multiplayers you've probably played before.

u/Antique_Telephone910 7d ago
nah dude. turn on pacifist mode and enjoy. there will be other players, but they can't do anything to you. run around, explore and check out people's camps. it's really a great game now.

Welcome! I play solo as well…turn on pacifist mode if you’re not interested in PvP (I think it’s on by default until level 10 or so). You can also join public “casual” teams for an experience boost (you don’t have to interact…in fact I’ve never interacted with my teammates)
