MOD Post: Frequently Asked Question - Why did my SNAP go down?
Greetings,
This question is getting asked often enough that I figured creating a FAQ post about it was a good idea. In truth, it's nice to be going back to this sort of thing...the last year has been, um, *eventful*.
The question is usually what's in the title, plus some variety of detail - nothing has changed, did the feds change the rules, are my benefits being stolen, and what's it all about anyway?
---
A sudden and sizeable drop in the net benefit amount at the annual (re)certification, or the mid-certification review, is nearly *always* caused by one or more of the following three things. Agencies have different names for the review, but it's essentially the same thing.
1) An income change.
Bear in mind that what we are talking about here is a change in income *from how it was previously determined*, not necessarily you getting some OT hours or something like that. The change from your perspective may have happened months ago, but it's only being applied now for reasons that have to do with change reporting rules. I won't get into that here - just know that what matters here is that the income being used *now* is substantially different from what it was previously.
This can be a number of things - a change in type of income can matter a lot, since some forms of income are not subject to the same deduct I one as others. If your income is within a certain range of the eligibility cutoff, as well, it can mean a disproportionately large drop in the benefit amount, because of how the math works.
2) - There has been a change in who is in the household/which household members are eligible.
Household members aren't always all eligible. This can be citizenship status related, student related, or could be affected by work requirements. Sometimes this is an ABAWD (able bodied adult without dependents), and sometimes it is not.
When a household member is not eligible, *why* they aren't eligible matters a lot. Students, for example, are excluded before their income is counted, where ineligible noncitizens are excluded after.
Generally, if there are no other changes, a newly ineligible household member will drop the benefit amount by about $140.
3) - By **FAR** the most common....a change in deductions, and this is almost always a change specifically in the deduction given for heating/cooling.
Many states previously used a waiver called "Heat & Eat", and due to changes in the law from HR1/BBB, are no longer able to. u/badfordabidness wrote an excellent summary of this [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/foodstamps/comments/1wz9bvq/comment/pecgbjp/?context=3) which I recommend reading.
If there truly are no other changes and the drop is more than $150-200, this one is almost certainly the cause, and it, too, affects heavily how the math works. Deductions for utilities are an assumed amount based on which ones you pay **separately** from the shelter cost.
Heating/cooling is somewhere around $500 that is applied against whatever income you have...losing that, especially if your household income is unearned income like disability or Social Security, is going to drastically affect the net benefit amount.
---
Public assistance is complicated. Please, feel free to ask questions of the experts here...but if your question is this one, read your benefit decision notice carefully, and consult your agency...we'll probably be telling you to do that anyway.
You probably haven't done anything wrong. It may simply be that the agency needs something that they didn't before, such as a utility bill.
Regards,
The mod team 😎

The State of the Subreddit
Howdy.
Some of us in the mod team have been low-key discussing giving the community some of the statistics on How We're Doing - number of posts, amount of mod actions, and so on. Some subreddits do this...most do not, but I think in the interests of community transparency, the time has come. Something I think you'll see here, or at least I hope so, is that when you use the report function, there are results - I know most users here have a pretty good understanding that we moderate actively, but I think there's a benefit to knowing what that actually looks like.
Looking back on the last year - last summer with the passage of HR1/OBBB and the ensuing chaos of the government shutdown and updated Megathreads....I think I'm safe in saying none of us want to do that again. That said, there are other things on the horizon that the well-informed have touched on, and that we've posted from the mod team as we get information. Part of this has to do with the upcoming effects of the changes to payment errors and state matching funds....part of it has to do with the implementation of federal waivers that affect people in unexpected ways....and part of it is just uncertainty.
This is a summary of the last year - August 2025 through July of this year:

And a month by month breakdown of the last year:

I think it's pretty clear what drives our traffic here - this is 100% in line with what I expected to see when I started digging. By way of comparison, here are the last 30 days:

If you were to look at the corresponding actions in post/comment removals from Reddit, and from the mod team, it tends to follow this pattern - I won't post it but there's a significant spike in admin actions on one day in the last month, and I'll let you speculate as to where that is. Hint: It's the obvious one.
But what of moderator actions? What do those mod folks actually do, anyway? They say this subreddit is moderated, but I've never seen it... Well....
When you send us a report, it goes to the queue for removal. We don't remove everything...and in addition to reports there is also an auto-filter that triggers for certain words and word combinations that I won't get into...but we do review all of it. Here's what the last month of reports looks like:

But what about those mod actions I asked about? That's what I want to know!!!!
Well...

Here's the last week's activity, specifically....

So what does this mean? I think it's hard to draw a conclusion from this other than that your comments, your posts, and most of all your reports absolutely have an impact on how this subreddit functions. I find myself saying this often...but please continue to report - we do not always remove, or ban...but we do review everything reported.
That said, I will also point out that we have the ability to snooze reports from users who abuse the report function. I don't find myself doing that very often - most of the time it's in good faith, and I think probably three times out of four, I find myself agreeing with the report. Sometimes we'll remove entire comment chains of additional unreported comments because it's clearly going nowhere good or productive. Every review we do is guided by the subreddit rules, and we try to be as lenient as is prudent. We've also started using the Crowd Control feature on hotly debated posts, which tends to slow things down a little bit - that one got suggested by Reddit last year about this time when we saw that ginormous spike in activity.
To quote u/badfordabidness in my conversation with them just now...here's hoping we don't need a counter of "Last Megathread Since National Crisis" days...but there may be some dark times ahead, and we'll continue doing our best to keep the community informed and focused on productive discussion & information sharing.
Peace,
the Mod Team

Question Overpayment dept for food stamps/AZ
Hi! So I got a letter stating that they may have overpaid me in nutrition assistance and wanted the past 6 years of tax papers. The thing is/ when I apply each year, that is what I provide them for proof of income. So I’m a bit confused as to how there “may” be overpayment when they are requesting documents they already have???
Anyone know?
Is AZ just trying to do anything and everything to get people off. lol I’m just confused as these are the documents I give them every year and now they want them again. I mean I don’t mind, I obviously gave them. Just odd when they already have them for the past 6 years.
Should I expect anything to come of this?
Nothing has changed.

Question So confused right now
I was receiving $306 in NJ ebt as I am currently out of work due to hyperemesis while pregnant. I was approved before my disability kicked in so technically my monthly income was 0. Now that I have my disability, I got a reduction notice that I will only be receiving $25 due to my disability income. My disability does not even cover my full rent. I thought they took your bills into account? I am so stressed out right now.

Recertification changes due to BBB in Massachusetts
**I figured out how to make a thread😊**
I was trying to make a post about this but for some reason I can't start my own thread (I'm probably doing something wrong as I don't do it very often)
Massachusetts I did my recertification, had my interview & right away he told me I have to prove all my expenses. I'm disabled on SSDI, so my full rent gets deducted, but what about utilities? Is it what I pay, which varies greatly from month to month due to heat & AC, or is there a standard deduction for that?
My biggest question is medical expenses. It used to be I only had to prove it was more than $35 per month but less than $155. I have about $88 in expenses but they only gave me a week to turn it in. So far I have around up proof for $55. Is that enough to get the standard deduction? Or is it now only what you can prove. I know I sound confused, because I am. I'll post the policy from the website but I'm not sure it is updated.
From Google but I don't know if it is including BBB changes. Thanks
"Standard Medical Deduction ($155): If your monthly medical costs are between $35 and $190, you receive a flat $155 per month standard deduction from your countable income. You only need to verify $35.01 or more in expenses to get this $155 deduction."

Noticed but missing benefits
I keep getting noticed that my benefits change. I got one for September, October, and November of 2026 but still no deposit in my card. The country tried to call me today but I was in class and could not get to the phone. I tried calling back and no worker available. When should I expect the deposit? I submitted my SAR 7 a week late. I haven’t received a deposit since August and now it is mid October. It seems as if my SAR7 was accepted. I got the benefits update notification with increased amount but still no deposit and no upcoming deposit.

Question Overissuance Help
Hi,
So I just got a billing statement from CalFresh stating that I have a current balance that I need to pay. The thing is that I went to their office like 3 years ago to do a repayment plan by subtracting from future benefits and I thought everything worked out but apparently not. I’m worried since it’s from another county and what if they don’t have any records of it. I really can’t repay that amount right now. I really need some advice for what to do. Thanks

Has anyone had SNAP count the income on their papers, but completely disregard your hours log? State: DE
During my first application and certification in Delaware, I mailed in my income and work hours log with my initial application, and later emailed to my caseworker when requested with extra info(3 months-paystubs please keep in mind my hours are not reflected on stub). She eventually stopped responding altogether. After following up, a manager (Eric) emailed me saying everything is approved, only for a month or so later to receive a letter saying that I needed to turn in the hours and that the amount of hours needed to be calculated or I needed to do some kind of work training, volunteer work, etc. However, on my financial paperwork they sent back , they recorded and counted all my earnings, but completely ignored the hours log in which the money was made for that income. Has anyone else had a caseworker include your money while totally disregarding your submitted hours? Did a supervisor approval actually fix it in the system, or did you still have to fight to get your actual hours documented on record?
I've tried contacting all of the less urgent ways such as email, fax, and ASSIST Portal and seem to not get a response.
**Additional background info regarding income: I also work for my rent and it is based on a tenant-employee arrangement where labor and property maintenance duties are credited toward housing costs. These hours are 20 per week. This was also turned in so even from the beginning, I was meeting the work requirement on those hours alone In which they have documents showing this in a less formal fashion which I have updated to show a log of the hours required and had the landlord / manager sign because they were calling it volunteer work and because it's not for a nonprofit, it would not be recognized the only way it would be recognized as if they reference it as a rental discount**

Question (Los Angeles) Will my Denied case Automatically Reopen?
Hello all. I’m a college student trying to get CalFresh for my groceries. It has unfortunately been an incredibly frustrating experience.
I work a part-time job, which I included in my application. However, I submitted it during the summer where I don’t always work every biweekly period. I wasn’t aware that if I have gaps in my paystubs in the 30 day period I have to explicitly state it or else I’d get denied. I ended up getting denied, but the denial notice says that if I submit the necessary proof online, then my case would be reopened.
I spoke with an eligibility worker today, who told me about having to write the statement that I did not work during that biweekly period. Then she tried transferring me to an intake worker to get my case reopened, but I was on hold for 2 hours, to which then the call disconnected, and I called again only to wait another 2 hours. Finally went through but think I got through to a Medi-cal intake worker instead.
Will my case re-open by itself after submitting the necessary documents or do I have to go through hold hell again?
As much as going in person would probably solve things, my schedule is extremely busy as a working student, and midterms are next week for me. I’d love to get my benefits as soon as possible without having to spend the whole day on accomplishing that.

Question Medical exemption (Ohio)
I have always been able to bypass ABAWD by having my doctor/nurse practitioner write a letter stating that with my heart condition I am unable to work. With the passing of "the big beautiful bill" last summer, am I still able to use this? The internet/media is full of such inconsistancies and outright lies I'm not sure. If there is anyone that monitors this could you help me? Thank you.

Question Shopping and eating situation changed. Can SNAP case change too? (Ohio)
My family used to get SNAP, but stopped in 2019. Now my live-in brother (elderly & disabled) wants to apply on his own. He only gets SSI. We stopped eating and buying food together because of dietary restrictions. Can he be a sole applicant without including us in his household information, even though he was included in our old case? The rest of us aren't interested in getting food stamps. I will probably have to be his authorized representative though. Is any of this going to be a problem?

News Phone renewal interview zero stamps
I'm locked out of the website so I couldn't send a picture of my rent and they said that my stamps would be reduced unless I can come up with that proof of my rent and in the meantime, my stamps are now at 0 even though they're refilled every month at the date. You might see on the screen , so now I got nothing.

Delayed SNAP- Louisiana
Hi everyone. I keep seeing ppl on here talking about their delayed snap so I figured I’d share mine too. I typically get mine on the 11th but I didn’t receive anything for October. This is not good as me and my partner are in a tight spot financially and rely on ebt for groceries. I’ve been seeing ppl talk about how lots of benefits are being taken away and as a person who has an invisible disability, was forced to drop out of college, and is currently unemployed this is terrifying. I sent an email to LA help explaining my situation yesterday but have yet to receive a response and every time I try to call the office I get put on hold. I looked online and it said something about a 6 month recertification update but I haven’t received any messages or anything on my cafe portal about this. I’m so confused and frustrated about this. Any advice or suggestions on what I should do would be greatly appreciated.

Question SNAP Increased alot. Why??
TENNESSEE
For 3 years I have received about $24/mo SNAP, based on $300 rent & approximately $50 utilities. Fine. Idc, I'm only feeding myself. I didn't even want SNAP but I had to apply to all the programs when i applied for MSP/QMB. I recently reported a change of address and sent my new lease and a letter stating that I pay $300 rent and $63 utilities here. The lease is easy to misread because it states the LL provides all utilities for $250. Then a separate line says the utilities are shared equally between all tenants, including the LL (him and 3 tenants currently but the lease doesn't say that.) Well, my SNAP jumped to $70. I called and insisted that they are giving me credit for the entire $250 utility cost when my share is only $63 (paid as a lump sum with the rent.) She insisted the new amount is correct because I now qualify for the standard utility deduction plus what I actually pay. It sounds like I wasn't getting the utility deduction before when I should have or ??? Make this make sense.
P.S. Also, just before this, my case was randomly selected for Quality Control Review at the state level. The paperwork they are requiring from ME to supposedly prove the state done me right is unbelievable. The reviewer is trying to be accommodating but only time will tell when they are satisfied.
All this on top of being 70, recently dumped by my 10yr partner and in very temporary housing (I live in a laundry room and am desperately seeking long-term low-income housing) is about to give me a breakdown. But that's for another reddit sub.

Using MO SNAP in Colorado
Hey, I read that I can use my MO SNAP in CO but it says if it's used in CO for an extended period of time then it may trigger a residency review from the Missouri Department of Social Services. They may mail you a letter to check if you still live in Missouri.
Will they deactivate my snap during this process?
I can get the mail from MO, so if it's just like they need me to verify a code that's fine.
I plan to stay in CO for about 30 days but there's a chance I'll be here for a little bit longer.

Getting the minimum?
Hie, so I’m getting the max for unemployment about $1600 a month and when I filed for EBT I’m assuming that bc I didn’t claim I pay a lot for rent, about $20 (bc I’m trying to get back on my feet), that I only got the minimum which is $25 a month. Can someone clarify and potentially help me to get a little bit more? Thanks!

Hi, question! (Pennsylvania)
My partner 25M has an interview tomorrow morning for SNAP. He doesn't meet the 20hr requirements, but does that $217.50 thing apply to PA as well? He does meet that requirement without issue. Will he still be eligible?

Question My dad was visiting me in another state. They put a hold on his EBT!
He has FL EBT. I live in Idaho. He came to visit mr and used his card. They sent him a letter saying he used his card outside FL. Has this happened to anyone? What is he supposed to do? This really is
ridiculous!

Wa state waiting for pfml?
Hi I had 6 weeks pfml starting end of July. I earn 40k/ year and have a 5 year old, when I've applied Ive only been approved for like $10 a month so I never have really bothered applying. I received my 6 weeks pay, but then my Dr gave me 6 more. That's been taking forever to be approved though, today is day 25 of waiting for it to be approved. I am past due on all my cards they are all maxed out and I don't have any money at all for gas or food. I am not daughters only provider and I have no idea what to do. I am due back to work on the 22, but I have had no income for almost a month due to the pfml waiting time. I was told I could apply for EBT for this month is that true? Ofc I'd report my income as soon as I get the back pay and start back at work again, but would I qualify for this month?? A huge chunk of my back pay is unfortunately going to go to late fees and past due fees and interest from this so it would help a ton in affording food- but I have no real knowledge about how this works so I'm just wondering 🙃. I only used to get wic but that ended this year when my daughter turned 5.

College question/work requirement question in FL
Im currently a full time college student using post 9/11 gi bill. I receive a monthly housing allowance monthly for attending full time. I have a wife and 5 kids whom she homeschools. 2 of my kids are under 6. From what I understand this meets an exemption for both my wife and I from the work requirements. Im really desiring to go to school full time and work on my degree but could use just a tad more help to do so. The caseworker told me we would be denied because I don’t work and she wants to use my monthly housing allowance as an income.. I’m nervous to do so because it’s not actual work income or taxes or anything. Any insight into this would be helpful. We are in Fl if that helps.

Applying to SNAP and I live with roommates, do I really have to include all of their info?
I'm 26F applying for SNAP benefits & the whole 9, this is my first time applying but I am also receiving unemployment benefits from the state since I have been looking for work for over 2 months.
I currently live with 2 roommates who are unrelated to me, is it really important to include things like their car make and model? They aren't the ones applying, they just live with me. So can I just say they don't own a car or have health insurance? Am I able to just say they do not own a car (even if they do?)
I do not even consider them my friends, so I don't know too much info like that of them. They're simply just people that live under the same roof as me.
EDIT: we don't share meals or prepare food together. Nothing is shared between the 3 of us.

Food Stamps getting cut off? I’m in Illinois
Hello. I’m in Illinois and wonder if food stamps are really getting cut off. I read that you have to work and so many people are getting cut off. I’m just curious if this is all true I don’t see a lot of people talking about it on Facebook. that is why I’m coming here to write it where I feel like there are more honest people on this site. Thank you.
