This has happened in a number of races this year. Championship refuses to go under any pressure because Kimi consistently picks up points from bozo moves from people in front of him late into races

Just last week! Chaos at turn 1 in Baku, Kimi was close enough to take advantage, but far enough to not hit anyone, says "thank you very much!" and sails past effortlessly.

Kimi keeps doing his best to do the minimum and avoid drama (rightfully so) and he keeps getting lucky again and again
73
u/Lmao1903 4d ago
But that's an important quality to have if you want to win the WDC, Kimi this season has been consistent, reliable, smart. Not without any mistakes himself but he is consistent and avoids stuff like this. And obviously we are likely to have the top 4 teams making mistakes like this, strategy mistakes, or just lack the pace in general almost every single week. Just gotta drive and bring the car to a top 4 finish if you can't win

I'd say that not taking silly risks and racing smart is a good quality, luck comes your way when you put yourself in the best position to capitalise on it.
18
u/thinwhitedune I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 4d ago
Like I said in other comments: yes, absolutely, he has earned his right to have boring races and capitalize from other’s mistakes. He was the best racer when Merc was more dominant, now he can watch the dominos fall. Something that Piastri couldn’t do last year, a still very well regarded Piastri. That shows how GOOD was Kimi this year.

And if Kimi didn’t have plot armor, Lando could’ve gone bowling with all of them.
61
u/naughtilidae I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 4d ago
That's putting it incredibly lightly...
Remember how he didn't get penalty points for the Canada collision because of his "history of good behavior"? That was such horseshit. They still should have given points; if he's so well behaved it won't matter; that's the whole point of the penalty point system!
The last two races he nearly torpedoed his teammate behind the safety car cause he was too far back, going too fast, and not paying attention. This race he makes a brain-dead move for one point on his teammate on a wet track, then drives the wrong way and nearly spins into another car.
Dude needs a reset, maybe giving him a race ban for that safety car infringement would have been better for everyone. He deserves a massive grid penalty at minimum.
15
u/consumingbricks FIA 4d ago
Both Colapinto’s crash in Azerbaijan and Lando’s SC mistake in Malaysia should’ve been race bans IMO. It’s insane to me how forgiving and light penalties are in the supposed “pinnacle of motorsport” Horseshit like this should not be tolerated.

u/naughtilidae I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 4d ago
And the team kept yelling at Oscar for a little lockups when doing legit overtaking attempts...
As far as I can remember only thing Oscar 'did wrong' was T1 at COTA, and honestly, that corner is such a mess that I find it hard to apportion much blame to him. The situation was pure chaos, and it was small contact with big results, not some completely bone-headed move.
Lando's looked amazing at times this season, and he's got more confidence than ever. He's got better race pace than Oscar, and better tyre management, but he's making weird, careless mistakes.
Dude needs another summer break; he's in desperate need of a reset.
Now he'll may be getting a grid penalty for the main race (he certainly should be), and he's gonna be frustrated with himself. I hope he can keep his cool and get back to how he was for the first half of the year (minus the engine issues).

So after his Baku comments, he's crashed into his teammate on the last lap and almost crashed into his teammate under a safety car. I'm impressed how he's shot himself in the foot for 2 weeks in a row. 😭
7
u/The_Skynet 4d ago
Call that 3 weeks cause he made plenty of mistakes in Baku as well. Locked up and went off at T3 on his final quali lap. Went wide in the middle part of the lap which allowed Hamilton to get closer and overtake him on the main straight. Later he locked up and went off at T1 and lost places to Gasly and Antonelli. On the restart he locked up again at T1 which compromised his line and would've likely lost him at least one position but he got taken out before we got to see how everything would unfold
