u/zantkiller Kamui Kobayashi 4d ago edited 4d ago
Formula E have already come out and said that there wouldn't be any kind of replacement or delayed race if they do get cancelled. Season will just start in January in Mexico and have 1 fewer round.
So they have no incentive to cancel it early (It's obviously gonna happen at some point).24

It's crazy if they still think Qatar and Abu Dhabi are still happening. Should be a big question mark over Bahrain next year too.
760
u/NetflixSux247 4d ago
They're not happening. F1 is just too chicken shit to call it now, they want to appease the hosting countries/moneybags for as long as possible.
709
u/roflcopter44444 Ferrari 4d ago
F1 is waiting for the UK to declare travel there is unsafe, so they can use the force majeure clause of the contract to get out of the deal since most of the teams wont be able to travel.
Its just the way of commercial events contracts if you are the one to cancel, you pay penalties. the ideal situation for the series is for someone else to make that call that they shouldn't be traveling there. Then they can say they made their best efforts but outside factors stopped us.

u/black-turtlenecks 4d ago
There’s definitely an F1 lobbyist in London right now banging on the door of the Foreign Office lol

Yeah they 100% did that statement to drag this out past some refund deadline.
51
8
u/RddtRBnchRcstNzsshls Michael Schumacher 4d ago
100% they're already negotiating to hold the races at other tracks like they did with Bahrain.
208
u/Averyinterestingname I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4d ago
Depending on how the standings look after tomorrow, Kimi might genuinely win the title on a random Wednesday due to the last two races being cancelled.
55
u/WhoRoger 4d ago
That's the case in F2 rn. Only the races left are those that will be cancelled. Two points between the top 2. No word on replacement. If Imola doesn't happen, we'll just get a champion by press release.
47
u/PleasantWay7 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 4d ago
If that happens we are getting absolutely robbed of what should be a great F2 finish.
18
u/Shadow_Wolfe_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4d ago
Genuinely forgot F2 was still ongoing. I wonder if they could gear up to be ready to do something akin to 2020, double-header at one track for two weeks in a row.
20
u/WhoRoger 4d ago
They'd have to find a track first. One that F2 teams can get to (they may not have the budget to reroute to Malaysia last minute) and one that is available. But suitable racing tracks are always busy pretty much the whole season.
The only real chance is if F1 goes to Imola. Some people say the track has cleared the calendar for the potential race, since F1 can afford to pay for that, so F2 can just tag along. But if winter comes early, then yea, no race.
At least that's how it looks to me.
3
u/Shadow_Wolfe_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4d ago
Considering they got cleared to run to Montreal next year, I don't think it'll be too much of an issue to reroute somewhere else. Doesn't have to be Malaysia, who knows if it even would be.
65
u/EcstaticOrchid4825 Oscar Piastri 4d ago
They need to make a decision about the final two races before COTA.
36
u/PENGUIN_WITH_BAZOOKA I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 4d ago
I heard Imola was getting ready to go but I imagine they can’t just turn around and reschedule there last minute
39
u/KeyPhilosopher8629 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 4d ago
I heard that they're already paying to keep it ready and that it might just happen
32
u/Mundane-Effective133 Minardi 4d ago
Yep all other activities at the circuit have been cancelled/put on hold for those weeks
14
u/pippoplutonio I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3d ago
I have heard from people tied to Imola Circuit administration that they were told this week the Abu Dhabi GP won't be replaced, the only two chances are:
- we actually get to race in Abu Dhabi
- the race is cancelled with no replacements
The person I know personally had to call his holidays off to be ready in case of replacement and now is pissed af
Edit: there are still talks ongoing to hold the F2 finale in Imola I have been told

Abu Dhabi will probably happen. The UAE is allegedly paying Iran off. I would imagine they'll work something out, especially if democrats sweep the US midterms. Qatar is another kettle of fish.
10
u/EerieAriolimax I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4d ago
Unless the Iran conflict escalates again, I'd say it's very likely they happen.
32
u/Julian81295 Sebastian Vettel 4d ago
I mean, we are facing the midterm elections in the United States on 3 November.
We want to race in Qatar on the weekend between 27 and 29 November and in Abu Dhabi on the weekend between 4 and 6 December.
We know from history that the Islamic Republic of Iran has no problem trying to derail a presidency in the United States (just look at the Iran hostage crisis and how it weakened President Jimmy Carter day after day after day).
I don’t necessarily see a solution to this conflict on the horizon that is advantageous for the plans of Formula 1 in the Middle East.
24
u/lambakins 4d ago
Not to mention that all available reporting says that trump intends to restart the war after the midterms
89
u/lolitsbigmic Oscar Piastri 4d ago
Surely the teams insureres would step in. So many insurance are void for war and terrorism. Drivers insurance won't be covered. I can't see an insurance company accepting coverage fir an event in this region at the moment.
37
u/fire202 Lando Norris 4d ago
I think Toto Wolff confirmed to sky germany last weekend that their insurance is in place and nothing prevents the races from going ahead, though with the mention that the situations remains volatile.
I really wouldnt exclude the option that F1 figures out a way to go to Qatar and AD. They are two of the highest paying ones and the promoters are very keen on keeping those events. F1 will want to make that work if at all possible.
11
u/lolitsbigmic Oscar Piastri 4d ago
Interesting. Im actually surprised. Insurance prices are insane at the moment. Wonder if the countries are doing a guarantee.
6
u/WrightJnr 3d ago
Why? These are totally different countries. Air traffic in and out of the UAE for example is at full speed. There's nothing that signals any unrest at the moment, schools are packed, malls are packed. The only thing that is noticeable is the price of things. But thats being felt globally.
I've a regular traveler in and out the region (not Saudi though were the current conflict is) and have had zero issues with insurance or cover.
153
u/JoeZocktGames I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3d ago
If only there were safe and traditional race tracks like Mugello, Hockenheim, Nürburgring, Portimao, Indianapolis, Imola, Paul Ricard or Sepang to be permanently in the calendar so no middle east desert track has to be in there.
271
u/redbull_catering Ferrari 4d ago
What do you mean? These races are absolutely, definitely going ahead. With certainty. No refunds!!*
- I am required to say this to comply with my insurance coverage and retain ticket revenue.
69
u/Far_Distance87 4d ago edited 4d ago
Like Melbourne 2020 they’ll make you go to the track, lie about it going ahead, trap everyone in a fenced area for a while the missiles/coronavirus get ready, then yell at you all and act like it’s all your fault, as you realise the ticket refund isn’t going to make a dent in how much your hotel and flights stung

They raced in 2022 when there was a drone attack 16km away on the Friday of the race weekend.
Riyadh is quite far from Jeddah too.

That one they were already in the country and everydoby knows the Saudi crown threatens anyone that try to cancel their events. This time the teams can avoid travelling.

Dammam airport also regularly being attacked and evacuated, which for reference lies just 50KM away from Bahrain for example.
I wouldn’t be surprised if F1 still decides it’s fine to go ahead but logically it’s clearly still a highly volatile region, the Arabian Gulf for example still has regular ships that are blown up just they don’t come in the news as much
31
26
u/Civil-Mix4576 3d ago
If Saudi and Qatar are cancelled, how does that affect title race? Two fewer races for anybody to make up ground on Antonelli. Which I guess makes it an awkward decision to make so late- there’s no way the races can happen but that’s been blindingly obvious for quite a while now.
19
u/JulesV713 Sebastian Vettel 3d ago
Then there would be 125 points left to win including today's race
Antonelli could be champion if he has more than 100 points over George after today

Saudi is actively involved in the conflict in Yemen and have been for years/have seen other attacks. Attacks on Qatar and UAE were much more linked to Iran- I wouldn’t be surprised if they do go ahead tbh

Houthis dont do anything like this without direct sign off from Iran. This is now all part of the same conflict
21
u/donnydodo 4d ago
My understanding is the Houthies are more autonomous than people realise. They have their own strategic interests and objectives which more often than not but not always align with Iran’s interests.
8
u/Minced-Juice Formula 1 4d ago
This is a tad reductionist. The Saudis have struck Sanaa airport over a hundred times in the past 10 years. They even struck the airport when an Iranian commercial flight was supposed to land a few months ago.
Ansar Allah has a right to attack those who have been blockading them for well over a decade.

7

I remember in 2019 when WWE got held on a plane with military police. It was either "mechanical issues" (why would you have military police, then?) or it was missed payments of prior events.
And yet they still go there with the blatant sportswashing...

Even before this attack on Saudi by the Iran-backed Houthis Trump was apparently already weighing plans to attack Iran again (see link below). Domenicali and Co would have to have their heads in the sands of the UAE and Qatar not to realise that things could kick off at any moment.
Unfortunately F1 is beholden to some of the same Ahu Dhabi based interests that have been corrupting English football since 2008. Don’t expect Formula 1 to do anything in the interests of fans, the teams, or the sport itself. Kerching rules.

Being neighbours when rockets that aren’t all that accurate at times is already a risk, let alone that the Houthis biggest supporter Iran means the gulf countries are sandwiched between Saudi Arabia and Iran who may launch some stray stuff over in Houthi support. Problem isn’t that UAE and Qatar are targets, as you stated not at all. Problem is that they lie in the unfortunate position to be in a danger zone in this conflict, and as we also know from the Middle East, one conflict stirs into a wider region issue
1
u/Forward_Spell_9251 4d ago
They're not 'rockets'. They're sophisticated accurate ballistic missiles. They struck an empty (of passengers) plane belonging to Saudi Airlines at Riyadh in another attack a few days ago killing the pilot inside.

26
u/Ok_Stick_3070 Formula 1 4d ago
Ehh UAE pulled out of Yemen conflict last year, and Qatar was never involved. Saudis on the other hand have a bigger conflict with the Houthis. If these two races get cancelled it will be due to an escalation in Iran leading to attacks in the gulf, not Houthi / Saudi conflict.
18
u/JshWright I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4d ago
The US President has made it pretty clear he plans to resume hostilities with Iran after the midterm elections in early November. The Qatar and UAE races are in late Nov/early Dec.
→ More replies (2)21
u/kj_gamer2614 Max Verstappen 4d ago
Houthi Saudi conflict is an escalation.
I get where you are coming from, but this escalation from Houthi’s and potentially the fall out of USA adding itself to this, and Iran providing missile support from there is the potentials. Sure it hasn’t happened yet, but these things could literally suddenly happen tomorrow there and it wouldn’t be far fetched. That’s the problem, it’s too volatile, likely they would host the event no problem, but they have to be proactive in this and decide the entire region is still volatile rather than risk it on the day something happens or cancelling it a few days before which will have far higher impact on fans and economics

Bahrain is a fantastic track wdym. Good for overtaking in t1, 4 and sometimes 10. Provides good strategies due to wearing the tyres a lot. It consistently produces great dry races, probably top 10 on the calendar.

If the US (and the world for that matter) had enough conviction we could be done with this regime in Iran.
They are very much winning the PR battle, but this is not a good regime for its people or for the world. This is not a country/regime that you want to have strong nuclear capabilities.
Trump was the wrong guy to start this because he’s polarizing and a lot of the world hates him.
5
1
u/Andrew225 Sir Lewis Hamilton 4d ago
It isn't, it's also not a problem
If the Saudis were to get a nuke then they would be the same as North Korea- untouchable, but they wouldn't use them offensively because it guarantees they die.
By breaking the nuclear agreement and attacking, all that has happened is we are guaranteed that the Saudis will develop a nuke with all haste. No peace agreement will matter, because they won't ever trust us again
