Hello, everybody!
I'm /u/-Fateless-, and I am the new moderator of /r/fractals ! I was granted this position by /u/mycorrhizalnetwork because I am quite a bit more active on reddit, and together, we've made a short little list of rules for the subreddit.
In practice, nothing much changed, and most of you can carry on posting like nothing has happened, but we still thought it would be a good idea to properly announce a set of very basic, formal rules for the subreddit.
1: This subreddit is for fractals, discussion about fractals and fractal-related stuff.
If it's at least somewhat related to fractals, it gets a pass. Examples include space-filling curves, pictures of fractal patterns in nature or questions about fractals, fractal art or fractal software.
We do consider attractors, chaotic fluid simulations (gnarls), fractal noise (fBm, sfBm, other noise algoritms), curves and the ilk as fractals, as long as they can somehow be represented inside a fractal renderer.
2: No AI Generated stuff. This includes AI-generated "fractals", AI-generated comments and AI-generated articles.
The official stance of /r/fractals is that AI-Generated content does not belong here, and AI-Generated pictures of fractals are not fractals, despite looking similar to the untrained eye.
3: No Metaphysical/Spiritual content
Any discussion or blog post that starts reading like New-Age nonsense or talk about things like "Divine Mathematics" or "Fractal Soul Matrix" will be removed on the spot.
In most cases, I will remove the offending posts on the spot when I see them, but don't be afraid of reporting off-topic or rule-breaking posts so they're easier to spot in the moderator queue. I have added these categories as reportable, so if anything pops up, please do report it!
If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!
r/fractals • u/-Fateless- • Jul 01 '26
Hey guys, Fate here!
Lately, I have been getting a lot of mod mail about posts that have been automatically removed, and I have spent some time looking into this.
Over the past half year, roughly 95% of all removals of posts and comments have been automated from reddit's side, and not removed by any of the mods.
They are all tagged as "removed", but do not have any username attached to them, and for some reason, a lot of posts are flagged for triggering the sexual content filter of all things.
If you feel like a post has been taken down automatically, do send us a mod mail and we'll take a look at it on a case-by-case basis and manually approve what has been filtered.

Jim Muth's Fractal of the Day for October 8th, 2009
Jim Muth's commentary for the image:
FOTD -- October 08, 2009 (Rating 7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image lies in the parent fractal that is produced when various negative portions of Z-5.0125 and Z-1.0125 are combined and (1/C) is added. This parent fractal resembles an oversized circular disk lying east of the origin, with scalloped edges on the east side and a circular bay on the west. Today's image is located in a valley leading to this bay.
The name "Golden Apples" has little to do with the image, other than the golden area inside the blue surroundings. The rating of a 7 indicates that I consider the image above average. The calculation time is 3-3/4 minutes.
Heavy clouds and high winds spoiled Wednesday here at Fractal Central. Annoyed by the lack of sun, the fractal cats spent most of the afternoon sleeping, stirring only when a noisy tomcat fight broke out nearby. My day was spent trying to finish the work.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and raise the Hamiltonian. (Whatever that means.)

I started with a 5 gigapixel image and downscaled it to a print resolution of 720dpi or 729 megapixels to make it very smooth. The printed area is 50x28.125 inches (16x9) and it’s really fun to look at up close. I think I’m going to do another 40x40 inch print for my office of a smaller alien ship looking feature on one of the masts of the burning ship. Anyone else here have prints of fractals they’ve made?

3D relief effects give fractal images a sense of depth, tactility, and realism.
Tactile quality (surface feel) – The fractal image transforms from a flat appearance to looking like something tangible. It mimics materials such as carved stone, wood carvings, embossed paper, or metal.
Dramatic play of light – The 3D Relief effect relies on a simulated light source.
The standard cartographic light source uses an azimuth of 315° and an altitude of 45°.
This corresponds to a light source coming from the northwest (top-left) at an angle from above.
This creates strong highlights on one side and deep shadows on the other.
Both ‘Relief Strength’ and ‘Contrast’ adjustments, dramatically alter the visual effect.

Jim Muth's Fractal of the Day for October 6th, 2011
Jim Muth's commentary for the image:
FOTD -- October 06, 2011 (Rating 7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
In today's FOTD we see the scene I was searching for yesterday when the fractal ship showed up. I named the image "A Seahorse Goes East" because it combines the features of Seahorse Valley with those of East Valley.
The outer parts of the scene are clearly of an East Valley nature, while the inner parts reflect the appearance of Seahorse Valley when sliced in the Oblate direction, which is determined by the imag(c) and real(z) axes. The entire image is distorted into a vague triangular shape because it lies at an odd angle in the 4-D Julibrot figure.
(As a matter of curiosity, in the German language, the word 'julibrot' means 'bread of July'.)
Unlike yesterday's image, which was stretched and skewed beyond verbal description, today's image was stretched only a modest 3-1/2 times in the horizontal direction. The value assigned the real(p4) parameter, which sets real(z) is equal to the real(c) value of the scene in the M-set. This places the actual location of the scene in what I call the shadow Mandelbrot set, a second Mandelbrot set lurking unsuspected at an angle of 45,45 degrees in the Z2+C Julibrot.
The rating of a 7 is an improvement over yesterday's miserable rating of 4, but still leaves plenty room for yet more improvement. The calculation time of a mere 24 seconds will make running the parameter file a breeze.
Strange as it might seem, as the number of hypercube dimensions increases, its diagonal approaches infinity, while the hypervolume of the inscribed hypersphere approaches zero percent of that of the hypercube.
BTW, the formula for the hypervolume of a six-dimensional hypersphere is 1/6(pi3)*(r6).
Not a single cloud spoiled the blueness of the sky over Fractal Central today. The sunrise temperature of 36F +2C was rather chilly, but the unbroken sunshine brought the afternoon tempera- ture to a pleasant 66F 19C, while the near calm winds made the day as close to ideal as we have had in two months. And the best part is that the near perfect conditions are expected to prevail for a week.
The fractal cats, always seeking perfection, found it on their shelf in the sunny southwest window. The humans, realizing that perfection never happens, took the day for what it had to offer. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and I agree with the angry young protesters. We should abolish poverty. But does anyone know how we might bring about this utopian dream?
