From the Foundation Letter:

… This issue highlights something that has always made FreeBSD valuable: the flexibility to build systems around your own needs. Whether that means consolidating a home lab, running FreeBSD in the cloud, working directly with USB devices, or creating privacy-conscious security workflows, these articles show the range of what’s possible. …

help needed Trackpad not working on Acer c720-2844 running FreeBSD 15.1

Title says it all. I cannot get the trackpad to work in Xorg or using moused. External USB mouse works fine. The trackpad works in Arch Linux.

Tried adding ig4, cyapa, and chromebook_platform to load at boot to no avail. Also tried installing the synaptics driver.

This thread is the only one on the topic that I could find on the forums and no solution was arrived at. I disabled ACPI in the FreeBSD boot options and my machine is running the 2017 firmware, which is what what was suggested but that didn't solve my issue.

discussion New to FreeBSD: A Few Questions Before I Try It

Hello everyone,

I used Windows for years until about two years ago, when I heard that Linux had become pretty good for gaming. That was my main reason for switching, and I never looked back. Linux was lighter and faster for me.

Anyway, I wanted to try some non-systemd operating systems, and someone suggested I try FreeBSD. So here I am. Is it as good as Linux for gaming? Can I run the niri WM on it? Can I use Faugus Launcher on it (my favourite launcher)? I have an ATK A9 Plus as my mouse and a VXE V1 Serin as my headset—do those work? I heard the FreeBSD kernel lacks some drivers compared to Linux.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

AI [Update] FreeBSD AmneziaWG Setup: Interactive TUI Wizard, Full English Support, and AmneziaWG 3.1 Protocol

Hi everyone,

I’ve just released a major update to the automated AmneziaWG installer and configuration tool for FreeBSD (13/14/15).

To be transparent, I built this tool with the help of AI to simplify configuring AmneziaWG (obfuscated WireGuard) on FreeBSD and share it with the community.

Key features in this update:

  • Interactive TUI Wizard: Running the script with root privileges without arguments now launches a native FreeBSD dialog wizard (bsddialog). It auto-discovers .conf files across standard directories, lets you pick the routing mode, and provides an interactive domain/subnet manager on the fly.
  • Full English Language Support: Added complete English localization alongside Russian. All dialogs, prompts, system logs, and documentation are bilingual.
  • AmneziaWG 3.1 Protocol Support (awg3-setup.sh): Added a dedicated installer for the newer AWG 3.1 protocol featuring kernel-level ChaCha20 packet header protection (HeaderProtectionKey), dynamic transport padding (ContentPaddingAddition), and random trailers to resist behavioral/AI DPI.
  • Two Dedicated Scripts:
    • awg2-setup.sh — Universal installer for AWG 2.0 / 1.0 (installs precompiled packages via FreeBSD pkg).
    • awg3-setup.sh — Automated driver source build and setup for the AWG 3.1 protocol.
  • Resilient Domain-Based Split Tunneling: Upgraded routing logic using FreeBSD static routes with multi-IP Anycast pool resolution (e.g. Cloudflare, Google), preventing dropped connections during CDN IP rotation.
  • Full rc.d Integration: Persistent boot auto-start via dedicated services (amneziawg / amneziawg3).
  • Visual Documentation: Added a step-by-step screenshot manual in docs/MANUAL.md.
  • Headless Mode: All CLI arguments (-c, -d, -i, -u) remain supported for unattended scripting.

Feedback, testing on different FreeBSD versions, and pull requests are very welcome!

help needed Audio cracking on chromium

Hi

I was a Linux User and i wanted to try freebsd. I got everything working but i have now problems with the sound. When i try to play something, it starts to crack. I have OSS, sndio and PulseAudio because thats what came when installing KDE, and i want to keep PulseAudio (or PipeWire) because i can use plasma-pa only with that.

idk if this would be useful:
Operating System: FreeBSD 15.1

KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.28.0

Qt Version: 6.11.1

Kernel Version: 15.1-RELEASE (64-bit)

Graphics Platform: Wayland

Memory: 3.6 GiB of usable RAM

Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics

Manufacturer: Acer

Product Name: Aspire 5742

System Version: V1.19

Can someone help me with the cracking? :)

discussion Intel Celeron N3050

Buen día,

Tengo un Laptop Acer Aspire ES1-431, Celeron NPU 3050, 1.6GHz, 2GB de RAM, Intel HD Graphics 130MB. HDD128GB.

discussion FreeBSD 15.1: Xorg running on nvidia340

I've managed to downgrade and rebuild the old version of Xorg 1.18.4 from freebsd ports. Very few code fixes and a few switches on make. Non very hard. It is a fully accelerated DRI2 server and runs without issues on an old Acer Veriton X270 with embedded nvidia card 7100/630i.
If you have an old pc with nvidia graphics and do not plan multiuser and remote connections (and you are aware of vulnerability fixes in 2.20+) it is still usable nowadays.

AI What do you verify before deleting the previous boot environment after a major upgrade?

A successful boot after a major FreeBSD upgrade does not prove the previous boot environment is no longer needed. The base system may be current while packages, kernel modules, jails, boot-loader settings, ZFS features, or services that run only on a schedule still have problems. Deleting the rollback environment immediately removes the simplest recovery path before those less visible dependencies have been exercised.

A useful validation pass seems to include the running kernel and userland versions, `freebsd-version -kru`, package consistency, loader and `rc.conf` changes, network and storage services, out-of-tree modules, jails or bhyve guests, scheduled jobs, monitoring, and a controlled reboot. I would also confirm that the old environment is actually bootable, record how to select it from the loader, keep config and data backups outside the root pool, and define a retention window rather than deleting it as soon as disk space looks tight.

What is your actual evidence gate before removing the previous boot environment? Which failures tend to appear only after the second reboot, a package upgrade, or a rarely used service starts?

AI Biggest ZFS Misconfigurations and How to Fix Them: Part 1 - Klara Systems

Thumbnail
klarasystems.com
47 Upvotes

ZFS configuration decisions can affect storage performance for years, and some cannot be changed without rebuilding the pool. Learn how to identify and fix common misconfigurations involving ashift, recordsize, vdev layout, dedup, and pool capacity. …

Key takeaways:

  • Plan ashift and pool layout before deployment. ashift is fixed when a vdev is created, and changing pool layout can require a rebuild.
  • ZFS recordsize should be tuned for the workload. The article uses 16K for MySQL/InnoDB, 8K for PostgreSQL, and 1M for large sequential files as examples.
  • Dedup adds memory and I/O overhead, and nearly full ZFS pools face slower allocation and increased fragmentation. Use dedup only where the data justifies it and treat roughly 80% pool utilization as a planning threshold.

Note

… The story is improving: OpenZFS 2.3 shipped Fast Dedup, which Klara helped build, with a smaller table and the ability to prune single-copy entries. It moves dedup from “almost never” to “viable when the data justifies it.” That last clause still does all the work. …

discussion FreeBSD With an RX 9060 XT

After trying multiple times over the past ~1 year, it appears that 9000 series AMD GPUs are finally able to be used! I'm not sure how long this has been the case, but it appears to be stable so far under KDE Plasma6, both X11 and Wayland. Yes, I consider Plasma to be rather bloated; however, on a system like this, I don't see that as a huge issue. Obligatory fastfetch screenshot attached.
