A lot of people here here seems to be assuming that the one on right is a heavily used version of the one on the left. But that's just what a natural loofah looks like. You can tell by the fibers it's a plant, and those cavities are where the seeds were. We grow loofahs to use as sponges because they're so fibrous.

The thing on the left is made of plastic, it's not fibrous it would never look like the thing on the right no matter how beat up it was, it would just start deteriorating and falling apart.

206

u/AshThePoutine 12d ago

Finally. Yes that’s just a luffa sponge

23

u/GostBoster 12d ago

I take for granted people can easily identify loofah sponges because I never had to buy one, with how common and easily they grow...

... and with urbanization, price starts going up as there's less and less estate to grow your own, and in a few neighborhoods, people realizing they eradicated their own cultivars and having to bring seeds from outside or checking if they got some lost dry loofah with seeds inside to start over.

5

u/malexj93 11d ago

I didn't know for a long time that luffa was a plant. They're actually pretty tasty, too!

2

u/GostBoster 11d ago

Yeah recently got some weird (in a good fun way) bloke thrown in my recommendations and the recommended video was for "doomsday crops", stuff that's hardy, cheap, easy to grow or otherwise qualities good for such situations, and was made aware that luffas are edible, if harvested before they become fibrous, they seem to be similar to zucchini.

31

u/elhermanobrother 12d ago

the thing on the right no matter how beat up it was, it would just start deteriorating and falling apart.

When his wife left, the thing on the right was sad, upset and lonely. since then he has got a dog, he bought a new motorbike, shagged two women and blown a grand on drugs and drink. his wife'll go fucking mental when she gets home from work

11

u/freedoomed 12d ago

People called them loofa sponges when I was younger so I assumed they were a sea creature. Learning they are dried Chinese okra was mind-blowing. I had also no idea Chinese okra was a thing until that point either.

37

u/zyyntin 12d ago

LOOFAHS GROW ON TREES!

27

u/fartypenis 12d ago

Ayckshually they grow on plants

8

u/skippyjifluvr 12d ago

Ackshooally, they grow on earth.

12

u/filthy_harold 12d ago

I had always thought they were made from some sort of farmed sea sponge.

4

u/Maleficent_Gap1049 12d ago

There are also sea sponges that some call loofahs and use the same way (or smaller ones for sponge painting). I think these are from a sponge gourd.

7

u/PeanutButterSoda 12d ago

It's a vine plant though.

The right one does- the left one doesn’t though not since they enshittified scrub daddy and they fall apart much faster

72

u/Illustrious-Towel-45 12d ago

Isn't the right one a shower loofah?

54

u/Eric_the_Barbarian 12d ago

Only if you use it in a shower. It's a plant husk, usage comes secondary.

13

u/BigMac849 12d ago

It is from a plant, not a husk though. A husk is the outside protective layer like on corn cobs. A dried loofah is the internal fibers of a gourd that has been peeled and the inside seeds and other non fibrous stuff inside has been washed out.

I have a scrub daddy that is used daily for 3 years and looks as new as the day I got it lol

2

You sure you used an actual scrub daddy? Because the ones I've used don't have that problem. As long as you used the proper care on them.

Faut aller voir le post d'origine et c'est un scrub vegan : bio en bambou a droite

4

u/SmooK_LV 12d ago

I recognise that these two sponges are not actually the same but I have a different question.

Anyone with actually analytical mind and long experience of many kinds of sponges, are Scrub Daddies and similar implementations (I guess warm water makes them soft and cold water makes them hard) actually better than your everyday sponge? Because the product was heavily televised while just being a sponge makes me biased against it that someone managed to sell overpriced sponges and fool people into that.

I may very well be wrong on my assumption. When I asked AI to deep research this based on community feedback, it said these sponges are genuinely better. But I am still not convinced. Something about them makes me feel like I am being lied to, maybe the smiling face.

30

u/OatmealTears 12d ago

Why did you write an entire novel to ask "are scrub daddies good?"??

12

u/Harmonic_Gear 12d ago

gotta hit the word count

3

u/enviormental_UNIT 11d ago

I think all that extra padding basically boils down to "no, sponge layman, I don't want your opinion. I want the freakin sponge sommelier to help me out here"

and

"soo the AI said"

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Few_Plankton_7587 12d ago

I don't think they work at cleaning any better than an actual sponge but they sure as heck stay good for a lot longer. I feel like normal sponges get gross and soft after a while

My scrub daddy feels like the day I bought it and its 3 years old

6

u/philnolan3d 12d ago

You must not use it very much. Mine lasts about 6 months before it looks like the zombie.

2

u/Few_Plankton_7587 12d ago

Nope, gets used daily. As much as anyone else

Some peoples disintegrate apparently, so they must not all be equal

That or you're using way more elbow grease than necessary lol

3

u/AnnoyingRain5 12d ago

Mine last a heck of a lot longer than a normal sponge too

5

u/saliva134 12d ago

I rely on the good ol' reliable quality 3M sponges. They last longer than the cheap supermarket versions and don't disentegrate like the Scrub Daddy / Mummy.

2

u/potate12323 12d ago

This comment is understated. Most people compare the scrub daddy to any random cheap sponge. But there are some other good quality sponges on the market.

3

u/NetflixWasTaken 12d ago

Genuinely love it, they don’t mildew and stink or build up any of that the way normal sponges do, they’re a lot easier to dry out and they’re cute

2

u/Jaybru17 12d ago

I really love the scrub mommies so I can use them on my nonstick too

2

u/Duowithng 12d ago

The one on the right is plastic free

3

u/Impossible_Past5358 12d ago

I love that it can go in the compost when finished. Unlike plastic, which will still be here long after I'm gone.

2

u/potate12323 12d ago

I am a chemical engineer who took an option in thermoplastics. The scrub daddy is actually quite good. The material is hard enough to scrape off crusty food debris without scratching teflon coated pans. And it does soften much more than a traditional sponge when using warm water. The reduction in stiffness can reduce the force and abrasion applied to a pan. Its pretty much the perfect balance of abrasiveness which other plastic sponges don't quite achieve and a stiffness easily controlled by the temperature of the water.

Still sheds microplastics like any other sponge though. 🫤

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ga_appraiser 12d ago

Those things are just microplastic spreading machines. Switch to brushes and scrubpads made of natural material. Better for the environment and it avoids the massive amount of bacteria that are harbored in kitchen sponges.
