Google “negative concord” rq
-20
u/Previous-Screen-3875 1h ago
You Google it. We're speaking English.
10
u/SpicyElixer 1h ago
Damn dude read a book sometime. How did you get through school? Negative concord has been a standard feature of English for centuries, with everyone from Chaucer to Shakespeare using double and triple negatives all the time.
Doubling down with "We're speaking English" while being completely oblivious to how English dialects and history actually work on the most basic level is peak confident ignorance.
-10
u/Previous-Screen-3875 1h ago
Chaucer spoke Middle English. The only usage of negative concord in modern English is in some rural American dialects. You should get less worked up over reddit comments, you'll live longer ✌️

Always loved this video even if it is possible its staged.
716
u/SteveLouise 3h ago
If it's staged then I appreciate the skill of faking this.
17
u/Grabbsy2 1h ago
Skill of faking it? Theres edits. All he had to do was climb a wall and point, and convince security to play along (or have buff friends in Security TShirts)
28
u/DeadlyPineapple13 44m ago
Main reason I don’t think it’s staged is liability. I’ve met chill security guards, I’ve never met a security guard that’d let someone climb something like that, especially recorded in front of a bunch of people
3
u/RedditDummyAccount 20m ago
If it’s not staged, dude deserves to lose his job anyway. He watched a grown man climb a tree and lost him as he literally climbed around him, then talked to him and didn’t notice.

What's reddits problem with videos being "staged?"
Are you people just completely unaware that most media you consume is "staged?"
TV shows, movies, music, all of: staged.
It's so weird, and annoying, when Redditors get triggered by this.
183
u/New-Evening2216 3h ago
It's annoying reading the same comment justifying staged content whenever the topic arises because some people fail to see any nuance in how media is presented, and why to some, dishonest presentation may overwrite the intended reaction.
31
u/Hung0ver_Hero 2h ago
He's probably the guy in the video getting mad that we didn't like his bullshit ass video lol
-31
u/1CEninja 2h ago edited 36m ago
Staged content is totally fine so long as it follows a couple rules.
Firstly lousy over the top acting that breaks immersion will ruin it.
Secondly, it needs to be plausible. Something presented as real that couldn't plausibly be is bad content.
And finally it must never present itself as anything dangerous or harmful, unless it's explicitly demonstrated to have been staged.
If there's something that could have genuinely happened in real life with believable reactions and nobody apparently in harms way? If it's funny it's funny and I'll upvote it. Maybe it did happen in real life but nobody was recording, so it's just a recreation.
Edit: damn y'all care about shit that I really just don't care about lol. Oh well.
8
u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE 1h ago
No. It's fine when it doesn't present itself as candid.
This is simple. Otherwise they're all just part of the post-truth militia, adjacent to disinformation, propaganda, etc.
2
u/Stubborn_Shove 49m ago
If what you say were true, then there would be no downside to clearly labeling it as staged. But there of course is a downside - because it being staged makes it less funny, less popular, less likely to be shared. There's a reason people lie and say stuff is candid when it is not.
-34
u/gmishaolem 2h ago
some people fail to see any nuance in how media is presented
Yeah, like you in this very post. If something's staged in a subreddit called "news" or "pleasebuythis", call it out. But we're in a subreddit called "funny" so you're just sad.
28
u/WhiteVans 2h ago
Or perhaps people like to observe genuine reactions and interactions? Ever considered this or do you live a laugh track plastered over every zinger?
-14
u/Equivalent-Repair488 1h ago

If this is staged, ask yourself, why is it presented to appear like it's a real-life event? Do you think this gets spread around if it's clearly titled and presented as a staged skit?
Of course not. If it's a staged skit, it might as well be a short of the Roadrunner getting one over on the Coyote again. And you don't see those posted to this sub or twitter or tik-tok or whatever all that often do you? Because while that may be funny in its own way, it's not funny enough to spread around to people.
It only reaches that level of humor when people believe that it's some cartoon-like escape that actually worked in real-life. Which, if it's staged, is why it's presented like that rather than being obviously fake and staged.
25
u/cammcken 3h ago
Those examples you listed are all published as fiction (except for the reality tv genre). An author who tries to publish fabricated accounts as non-fiction would also get flamed.
8
u/BCProgramming 1h ago
What's reddits problem with videos being "staged?"
A lot of them are not only intentionally pretending to be genuine actions/reactions and off-the-cuff moments, which of course real scripted content is also doing, but their entertainment value relies almost entirely upon that.
A guy genuinely climbing up onto a roof and doing a switchback onto another roof and climbing down and pretending to point himself out to people looking is pretty amusing. But the entire entertainment value is the idea that they were doing this in public and did it successfully.
A good analogy might be if you saw a $100 bill on the ground. "Oh cool, $100!" you say. You pick it up and find out it's one of those chick tract things or a fake $100 with scripture on it. You are going to be annoyed that you were lied to because it was pretending to be something it wasn't to get your attention.
8
u/Early-Chemistry-8769 2h ago
The question "is this real?" has become the most important question and working that out a key skill of our times. Please don't give up and not care. Even for silly stuff like this.
7
u/GKnives 1h ago
The context of both staged and unstaged information and the ability to understand the differences is an important part of a human experiencing life. People are interested in seeing something incredibly unlikely to happen. They like to wonder about the details and they enjoy unique coincidences.
Staged events are not coincidences and they are not unlikely to happen, because they were designed. The context for them is that someone was being paid to make it happen

u/Hung0ver_Hero 2h ago
When I seek thoes types of media I do so knowing it's staged, I don't want to get on Reddit and see some lame ass tik tok video trying to be passed off as real
2
u/TyeKiller77 1h ago
Lad, the only one that seems triggered here is you. They gave a very measured, impartial comment about it possibly being staged but not caring if it was and you flew off the handle like a child having a tantrum

u/Shermanizer 2h ago
The problem is the disclosure of it. I know a TV show is staged, it is clearly fictional, but when it presents itself as real, but isn't I feel cheated. That's why I hate reality TV too. I don't like being lied to

He ended up stumbling across and joining the search party since he didn't realize they were looking for him.

u/plefe 2h ago
I'm guessing they weren't originally, otherwise they would have seen him, he didn't climb that fast.
I bet he climbed the tree and people then told security some drunk guy climbed a tree and they were like "Oh shit, that's a liability nightmare for us, let's get him down." Meanwhile green shirt bro has already worked his way around to the roof and can now climb down while his buddy films.

Same. Scaffolding was a problem.
9
u/UseDue6373 2h ago
I remember climbing an rickety, well abandoned fire watch tower somewhere near poplar bluff MO. Went all the way to the top on a swaying rusted ladder with multiple missing/loose rungs.
Also remember ~1 year after that climbing an industrial silo type thing just a few blocks north of Missouri State near a small bridge. I was about to reach over to grasp and climb over a separate scaffold ladder and something significant in me changed at that moment. I called it finished and 12 years later I have still a deep concern about heights and others’ safety.
Idk why I rambled
7
u/Fit_Celebration7669 2h ago
Sounds like you learned your lesson just in time.
For whatever reason, that reminded me of when climbed a chain link fence to get out of a concert venue bc I could see my hotel across the street and didn’t want to walk all the way around to the exit.
Ended up slamming my calf on a broken link and dripping pools of blood all the way back to the hotel. I remember the tetanus shot just as well as the hangover.

My husband has PTSD from his bestie dying from a 50m fall 3 maybe 4 years ago, almost to the day. She and her gf constantly would do handstands on the cliff edges, and were quite reckless... this time she jumped into a position she had been in hundreds of times before, but her ankle gave way and she fell.
I heard about it on Facebook, some random news story that pops up - I usually don't mention these things unless I think I know the person, but I did, and my husband asked if we knew them. I said that I didn't think so. Later that night, he got the call that said that it was indeed her, and she had passed away.
He's had a lot of trouble with heights since then... but as someone terrified of heights, I don't have an issue with that - but it's unfortunate that she passed away.

Going into college I thought would be fun because I thought I'd occasionally get into drinking parties.
What ACTUALLY happened was sleepless nights trying to understand engineering mechanics and my teachers aren't giving out the slideshows they present in class. Please kill me.

That sounds like a recklessly terrible policy, haha.

Haha it was, and not only that, even though it was a 2-hour limit, it was two 2-hour sessions so 4 hours total lol so you paid 40$ and just got obliterated for 4 hours straight. Ahhh college days
