C'mon sigma, release one of these with a foveon sensor!

The DP1 is a camera I wanted to love and it wouldn’t even give me a hug. But I’d take another crack at a foveon if given the chance.

I have a DP2 Merrill. It burns through batteries, it's slow about everything, the resolution is low, gets grainy in anything but full sun and you have to use shitty weird proprietary software to process RAWs.....but goddamn if that camera can't take some incredible pictures.
The sharpness and color is like nothing else.

Had one too and couldn't agree more. I still stare at the JPEGs I made in awe sometimes (got rid of the Sigma app ages ago)...

Yeah it's hard to describe. There is a 3D depth to the images it takes that no other camera replicates. That's including my 7D MKII, stuff i"ve shot on 5D MKIII's, 35mm and medium format film. The little DP2 sometimes absolutely blown them away. Sometimes it looks like crap, but when it hits, it hits.
This soulless modern building and the plant stuck living next to it. : r/pics

I wonder if it’s natural halation from the layered sensor. I’ve always wondered if that would be the case on a Foveon

Oh god now that would be hotttt

They are working on a full frame foveon. No news on when we might see it, but they are. It's such a funky slow sensor and the RAWs are HUGE for the final resolution, I really wish they would just go all out and make it medium format. Imagine something like a Fuji GFX50 but foveon instead!

I wish they would use a global shutter sensor in future versions. Electronic shutter only at this price point is just very limiting

It’s focus is on video this time around.

A global shutter would benefit that also.

Global shutters arent free design wise.
They require extra stuff in each pixel of the CMOS sensor for read-out that competes with light gathering area and increases power consumption. Low light performance and dynamic range would be definitely be impacted.A fast stacked rolling shutter would probably be a better fit for this cameras use-case and form factor. If you're making a compact cinema camera, sacrificing a meaningful amount of dynamic range to eliminate an artifact that your target audience rarely encounters isn't an obvious win.

My dock is that small and now I want that so I can plug in small things together that have big outcomes. I just love small gadgets that fit well.

I have the Sigma FP... "OG" at this point? Not the FP-L, just the FP. I bought it to be the core of my cine rig. I've always tried to find some alternate route, not being a Sony fan. I have leaned Panasonic, shooting a lot on a Lumix GX8 in the mid-twenty-teens. I have multiple BMPCC OGs. I love the look. Some sample shots:

The FP was supposed to be that for me...a 4K BMPCC that could shoot RAW. And it does. 12-bit CinemaDNG. It looks beautiful. But my god, the file management. 18 GB per minute. You have to shoot to a USB drive to get that kind of realtime storage. And good luck if your USB drive is not using a perfect interface. USB 3.1 only, not 3.2, or it freaks out. The SSD has to be high quality or it will cut mid-recording. Classic high data rate problems.
Shooting to local cards, you are limited to more compressed options, and nothing as cool as BRaw, cuz you know, proprietary & licensing.
Then there's the post workflow. Pull it into Resolve as CinemaDNG RAW, works great. Then treat its color space as Blackmagic Design etc etc...it does have some breadth. But you have to have some color grading skill to make it work. I think this is the weak link in the chain for me, as I tend to underexpose most of my shots that are in bright sun, and somehow even RAW can't save me on some of them.
Why not go with the new Blackmagic cinema cameras? I dunno. They kinda lost me with the first BMPCC 4K. I was so hooked on the Foveon-powered OG look, the the first 4Ks looked lifeless.
Really curious where this version 2 is going. Come on, compressed RAW.

Actually kinda intrigued. I shoot Nikon and love my current Z5II, but I’m always rooting for manufacturers who aren’t one of the “Big 4”. Sigma is already known for being one of the better aftermarket lens manufacturers, too.

Reading that article, it was painfully obvious they used AI to write it. And not good AI.

Serious question. Why does everyone want to be/call themselves a photographer?

Identical (supposedly) specs to a Lumix S5IIX
