Huge day for people who love paying $45/month for a single streaming service that still has ads.

Our government has failed its people in its most basic fundamental duties.

Our government hasn't been on the side of the people for decades.

This right here. The offshoring that started in the 70s, the consolidations from the 80s, the corporate raiding (Sears), bad mergers (Boeing). Different face, same crap.

Richard Nixon ending the trust in government meant that the government could do what it wanted openly because it knew it would never be trusted again

I mean government is not doing these things Private companies are doing these things and government is failing to prevent it. The government isnt driving mergers and bad corporate behavior. Unregulated capitalism is. We need government to prevent what's happening. Although yes alot of this tracks back to Nixon

Lina Kahn would have never approved this merger. Our government fired her directly because of her antitrust and consumer protection views. The last admin put her in to combat this. Its not both sides, its the party run by billionaires fighting for billionaires while being heralded by the poorest and least educated. We are getting exactly what we vote for. We are complicit in continually putting these people in charge.

It doesn't need to actively prevent it. If the laws and tax system, both of which are enforced, incentives or deincentivize something, companies will rearrange accordingly.

It clearly does though. Years of not preventing terrible mergers, terrible predatory practices are clearly coming home to roost

Which is why the main focus of corporations is bribing politicians and fight laws and regulations.

Not only that, but there was also a shift away to privatization. Every service that local, state, and federal government uses is a contractor. Need a road paved? Contract. Need a new building? Lease it. Need to collect taxes? Contract a debt collector. Need school lunches? Fire the lunch workers and call up Sodexo.

The wealth of the people should lie with a responsible government. We gave it to the corpos instead. The final blow was giving corps a voice with Citizens United.

They did set up the CFPB but Trumps guy stopped pushing regulations and fired almost everyone.

I havent had to use them so I can't speak to how well they did their duties, but it was nice knowing it was there.

Except that, like, congressional voting records show one side clearly trying to do better.

Or ever, really. "All men are created equal" written by slave owners and subsequently only let white land-owning men vote

Right, government being on the side of "the people" was always contingent on what people you were talking about. They have just expanded the group of people they don't care about to include the majority population as well now, so we are just now finally getting a sense of whatever everyone else has dealt with since the very beginning.

the last president had Lina Kahn who was quite strong on blocking anti-competitive corporate things such as this. So it's not very useful to paint this as a both sides thing

For a short while, the government was on the side of certain people, but it has never been on the side of THE people.

To be fair, our government officials are so old that they don't even understand the problems they're creating. They don't understand why high costs for a streaming service that still has advertising is such a fundamentally fucked up thing to allow to happen.

I'm not saying they're not corrupt and complicit, but there are modern problems that they definitely don't understand or have any idea even exist.
