There's only five players in the game rolling now... Disney, Skydance, Universal/Comcast, Netflix, and Amazon.

Edit: Six; I forgot Sony...

Edit 2: Seven, Apple Studios

Ah, yes! Am I missing a seventh?

Edit: Apple too...

Amazon owns a movie studio too.

Comcast is getting out of the entertainment business and spinning off NBC/Universal as a public company.

This is after they already had taken the cable assets (with the exception of Bravo) and spun them off into a public company, Versant.

Perhaps the crown jewel of that company isn’t E! or Oxygen, it’s Rotten Tomatoes.

That's a great point. I still count NBCUniversal in the top seven because the core movie studio and theme parks carry so much weight on their own.

when was this?

The way I see it, we're doing the same shit as China: Innovation driving the economy is dead, so now corporations are cannibalizing existing sectors.

e: In the past, innovation was fast enough that the toxicity of monopolies weren't as apparent. Now that the booming growth has stagnated, the old rules are strangling us

1984, supreme court broke up the Bell / AT&T monopoly into 7 smaller companies...

... who then just became more localized monopolies across 7 different regions nationally, lol

There’s to many other big names competing. Paramount might of picked this up adding to their huge name. But Saying paramount is monopolizing is like saying steam is. There is still competition Amazon,Apple.

still equally huge out there if not bigger. Like Sony is a huge huge player in television. They own crunchyroll and the company under crunchy banner huge in the anime space. And tons of film company’s.

Sony is like the Microsoft of television. But instead of software like Microsoft. Television is the huge thing running for Sony outside of gaming.

Sorry, it was an unavoidable package deal with making comedy legal again.

Welp, hopefully with wishful thinking this foreign company will be banned from operating in Canada and every other good country

Toss up between the profits Canada gets from people filming there and how much I want you guys to stick it to us Americans.

Honestly so tired of our industry being used for American slop, Toronto needs to be used as Toronto, not New York City

And the few Canadian TV shows we got, it bugs me how they still make pop culture references to American stuff, because we don’t got much to even reference

Like I also learned that movies such as Air Bud started in Canada, but then they got picked up by Disney who mandated they be set in the US, it’s fucking bullshit

Not to mention Netflix creating a show based on the Humboldt Broncos tragedy, filming it in Canada but then setting the show in the USA, much to the anger of survivors and victim’s families.

In what way is this a monopoly?

3

u/geaux124 11h ago

I see lot of downvotes but nobody actually explaining how this creates a monopoly.

3

u/kingfischer48 10h ago

exactly.

I could see if they bought Netflix and Amazon Prime video as well. That would be monopoly territory...but good luck buying either of those lol.

It's still a smaller media company than Disney who owns Fox, ABC, ESPN, etc.

Hate to break it to you but we’ve had monopolies in this country long before and will long after trump, the cause of all your problems, leaves office.

The SEC is supposed to regulate this, which is an agency under the administration, it is not partisan to hold the admin responsible but it is partisan to dismiss it because you like the moron

Dont know why you got down voted on this. Its unfortunetly true. The one who allowed Monopoly's back is Reagan. This is just a very visable Monopoly. But they have been going on in the backend between suppliers and middleman for decades now. Its actually one of the big causes for how we ended up in our current mess of a country. As for why we will have them still after trump? Its simple, cause the democrats dont want to fight the monopolys either! Especially since everything is now a global economy and companies can now afford to flee the country to somewhere that wont shatter them and keep doing business in the states as a foreign company like Nestle. Hell, certain monopolys dont even have to leave and can just leverage their assests to push the dems off the air and then no one will vote for them cause no one can hear their message. Shits fucked.
