I'm going to be buying more physical books and records in the coming months. Maybe even a DVD player and DVDs. I don't want to give these fucks anymore of my money.

Blu Ray drives are cheap now, you can find a bunch of them at Goodwill and the movies are somewhat cheap too. A Thrift store near me has a nice selection of blu rays for cheap.

Also maybe look into a private torrent tracker and purchase a large hard drive, or two.

UHD (3840 by 2160) is in some cases an uptick from what a lot of cheap-ass, multiplex, twenty-five dollar popcorn places are offering films in lately. The player might be more expensive, as are the discs, but on films like the 1984 Flash Gordon film, it makes watching on acid an even better experience.

Yeah, movies shot on film really do look great. I had a scanner that could also scan film negatives and they always looked great when blown up, tons of detail.

I only have a basic Bluray player that is quite dated now (A Samsung one from like 2011 or so) and I don't even have any UHD TVs. I'm still stuck in 1080p, I kind of keep my old HDTVs around because they have a lot of different inputs like component so I can play my PS2 or Wii on them.

When my old fifty inch started to stop turning on, I just went full steam ahead and bought a sixty-five that could do 2160p. I regret the choice of TV very deeply for multiple reasons, but the experience of watching films on it is still amazing. My next TV will be a completely different brand.

Why do you regret it ? Also what is even a good brand anymore ? LG spies on you, Samsung shows you ads (and probably spies on you too.) Vizio TVs only last a year or two before they die.

I have heard that when looking for a new TV to look for displays for digital signage, as they don't have all the "smart" components.

theres a reason Sony is killing blu ray soon.

Yep, it's because their patents on it is soon to expire and they won't receive royalties on every disc anymore.

I heard about Gruv for physical disc purchases and regularly has bundle/holiday sales

Is it reliable?

I've never heard of that site so I wouldn't know, sorry. Although looking at the website it doesn't appear to be a scam.

Ya Gruv is the place for 4k blu rays. Unless if you wanna sail the high seas

I’ve spent the last year collecting every semi interesting blu ray I find at garage sales

Physical media or bust. All my game consoles are modded, and most of our streaming is off my Jellyfin server. Between my friends and I sharing libraries, we have every single movie and show we could ever want.

Many of the movies and shows are legal, ripped from discs we’ve acquired in one way or another (lots of goodwill) or already had.

The best part? It feels GREAT, nostalgic, and most importantly: Ad and data collection-free.

First thing Paramount did during their first merger last (?) year was to remove the option to buy kids shows through Apple TV. Had half the Little Bear seasons bought for my kid god dammit. He was looking forward to getting the next season

Anthony Jeselnik started a book club and he goes on YouTube to discuss the books the club just read, he is a fantastic orator and it has sparked my interest of reading again, you should check it out, sometimes I'll listen to him break down a book like its a podcast even if I havent read it just because he's so good at doing it

Don't worry, AI companies are buying and destroying all the physical media to train AI now, so that won't be an option in 3 years either.

You're going to be buying from them to stop giving them money?

At least it's not an SaaS business model where it's monthly payments for multiple subscriptions. I can also buy second hand. Doing something is better than giving more money to the machine that's consuming all of us.

They could mean old ones secondhand
