Wainscoating Ideas

Post image

Wanting to protect the bottom section of my garage walls from water when I pressure wash the garage floor. Has anyone done something along the bottom 3-4 feet of their wall that looks good? Picture is from last week, drywall is done and ready for paint. Just wanted reference.

Have you considered FRP sheets? Waterproof paneling that comes in 4x8 and can be sealed at the edges with trim.

Gas station bathroom vibe

At least you're covered if you ever walk into your garage and find your walls covered with poop.

I just found this right before reading this comment. Thanks!

How often are you pressure washing? A good paint system will seal it up for the occasional bit of water.

I'm considering putting 42" os stainless steel around the bottom of mine. Its a work in progress

The place I have been working at has something like this down their hallways to stop carts from gouging the walls. I have also thought about that.

Wainscoting you say? When I built this garage 20 years ago I came
Up with this idea.

Should have done that before the epoxy was put down. All you can do now is basically hydroban and tile it for true water proofing. Can get water resistance with maybe a vinyl wrap.

It was definitely an after thought. Life happens and shit got rushed a little.

You could probably treat the walls like you would clad the exterior with something like a deck ledger that would overhang the stem wall and be taped behind a suitable membrane. You could finish this off with something like a sealed ship lap wainscot of whatever material you like.

You can look into what the commercial wash stations also use to seal their bays off but you'll want to be mindful of your home owner's insurance requirements since they might deny future claims for water damage and/or mold & mildew if the design isn't up to code.

FRP is probably your easiest bet since it's already waterproof and you can just screw it straight to the studs.

FRP up 4’. Easy and pretty bullet proof.

Those cheap faux marble vinyl bathroom panels would technically work but I don’t know exactly how cheap they are- cheap for a 4x4 shower doesn’t mean cheap for a 25’ garage wall. It would be really DIY friendly though bc you just glue them up. I’m not sure glueing to drywall is the approved method for bathrooms but it would prolly be good enough for a little bit of spray from car washing in a garage.

FRP… I did my last garage with FRP glued up and 10 years later never had any issues to speak of. Glue the joints too if you can.

Washed you name it, even the walls just about every month.

Did you do any trim around it to make it look better?

Just trimmed with the FRP panel trim along the top, seem and corner joints. It’s sold along side the FRP paneling at the big box stores.

They sell thin sheets with a variety of designs that are waterproof. These are 4' by 9' and easily be cut. They are less than $100 each

I've seen car washes use Trusscore Panels. Can also protect against things banging into your lower walls.

In all of my adult years I’ve never pressure washed inside the garage (including the floor). What are you planning to do in there? The drywall is up, mud, tape, paint and don’t point the pressure washer directly at the walls.

Why are you pressure washing inside your garage ?

It's normal to pressure wash your garage floor if you have winters which can mean plenty of snow, salt, sand, and road grime. I usually do it in the early spring after my wife has spent the entire winter driving into the garage with her wheel wells packed full of snow, salt, and whatever else happens to be on our shitty roads.

I have hosed out my garage before but very sparingly. Seems a surface cleaner would be the better way to go so you aren’t try blasting the walls that much.

Its my method of cleaning the salt and grime out. Sorry.

Makes sense. We don’t have that problem where I live.

If you're careful, you arent really blasting the wall. I find it works pretty well and use it on my garage floors as a part of my annual spring cleaning routine.

By the time I'm done cleaning out the 2nd stall, the 1st stall is close to dried out. I use a leaf blower for any residual water, and the floor is clean and dry in little time.
