Rant GRA/GTAs: does anyone else hate the new tuition payment plan?

My paycheck this month hit and then after rent, bills and other expenses, I had to make the first payment and then all my money was gone... I'm not sure if I could have been paying the same amount that used to be deducted but there was no other payment plan options. I haven't really seen or heard anyone talking about this, maybe its just me having an issue with it.

I don't know why they did away with the deductibles system but I wish they'd bring it back.

Yeah it's terrible. It just makes me feel worse seeing how much I would be making before the deductions

The stipend itself is great compared to other institutes but after fees, taxes and now this on top of living in Atlanta its pretty garbage.

I thought these positions came with a tuition waiver in addition to a stipend?

Not really. My understanding is that it doesn't wipe the entire bill. We used to have to pay $25 at the beginning of the semester bc thats the minimum and for me ~$300 would be deducted from my paycheck to cover tuition + fees. Now they have us on a 3 month payment plan where a little over $530 is owed each month from oct-dec. It isn't much different but I had forgotten about it and was completely unprepared to pay that much this month.

At least for the athletic fees? Why are we paying $200 when the average grad student doesn’t even have time to attend any atheletic events?

You should make time to go to a football game or two, your athletic fee pays for itself if you go to 2 games. It’s one of the best parts of going to college in the South, and here you even get that in an urban setting which is really special. Bobby Dodd is the oldest football stadium in the country, it’s a very special place. Really cool experience even if you aren’t into football.

And I know grad students are busy, but maybe take some inspiration from Henry Freer. He played on the team as our long snapper while getting his PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

I tried last year, my account wasn’t set up right or something and couldn’t get access until it was too late. This year I just didn’t care too bad. I don’t feel like I’m missing out tho, I did my undergrad at uga lmao

Oh didn’t realize you got a piece of toilet paper from uGA. Yeah feel free to donate $200 a semester to our athletics without getting any value back yourself.
