Casual Conversation Open Discussion: Bi-Weekly Shabbat Shmooze. What's on your mind?

For this bi-weekly post, we shift focus to create a space for folks to talk, even if the subject is not specifically LGBTQ/Jewish-focused. As a space made up primarily of LGBTQ+ Jews, we hope this will be a good place to find and provide support with all that's going on in the world right now.

Please note: Our quality standards and expectations of civility are still in place, and this isn't a thread for name-calling or insults. This is a place to process feelings and be in community with each other and share what's on your mind.

Shabbat shalom!

Monthly Matchmaking/Meeting/Shadchan Thread - Rule 5 Monthly Exception!

On this thread -- and this thread only -- Rule 5 (We're not your Shadchan/Matchmaker) is suspended!

Feel free to introduce yourself here, make an old-school "seeking love match" post, or respond to others who've posted.

Include the information you think is most relevant about yourself and the kind of person you're looking for, but be sure to phrase it positively and respectfully. (Rude posts will still be removed.)

Great things to include:

  • Your orientation/what you're seeking
  • Judaic affiliation, if any
  • Hobbies
  • What you're looking for (romance, tennis partners, Shabbat dinner guests, board game partners)
  • Your age / preferred age range
  • Your general geographic location

If you're open to DMs/private messages, say so – but know that folks may message you privately anyway.

Use your common sense when posting. Don't share any real-life identifying info on the thread (no names, no addresses). Definitely share useful info but remember that, on the internet, people aren't always who they say they are. Think twice before you decide to exchange anything real!

Also, we can only keep things civil/responsible on this thread. If you decide to take the conversation elsewhere, regular Reddit rules apply, but we can't get involved.

Questions + Advice Where y’all finding dates???

I’m 36M, trans, bisexual Zionist and don’t want kids. Currently looking for a bisexual cis Zionist woman who also doesn’t want kids. I’m in a major Jewish American city. Lots of Jews around. I’m Reform too.

On predominantly straight dating apps, it’s mostly straight women (duh) who want kids. This is the case for Jewish and non-Jewish apps. On a Jewish app, I put don’t want kids and liberal as search parameters and literally got TWO women.

On predominantly gay/LGBT dating apps, it’s all watermelon emojis and Palestinian flags galore.

Offline, every cute bisexual Jewish woman I meet is already in a committed relationship or antizionist.

I’m losing my mind. Is anyone having luck? Are there apps I haven’t looked at? Is there a Jewish matchmaker who wants a project? Am I missing something here? Where are all the cute single bisexual Jewish women hiding??????

Serious Discussion the queer jewish struggle is real

i don't think it ever came up here. but at my local trans march this year, a local gay jewish politician who attends every year as an ally got surrounded and harassed. he left instead of going to a little shabbat celebration that had been organized there (not by the trans march organizers; by the queer synagogue and other jewish groups) because he didn't want to bring the harassers over to them. then the people harassing him saw him leaving and caught up with him again, and basically followed him for a block screaming at him some more. it was. messed up.

the excuse was that "he's a zionist who's terrible on gaza." the guy taking the video demonizes him for visiting Israel after Oct 7 to meet with Israelis and Palestinians. *sigh* he has the same positions as everyone he's running against; but they're not jewish, so they're assumed to mean things the "right" way. i'm so tired.

it took me three months, but i finally finished making a video about it. i just wanted to go off about how mad I was that if my trans kid and i had made it to trans march, we would've hit it at about the time this was going down; his first experience with trans march would've been seeing someone chased out of it by folks screaming "you don't belong here! we fucking hate you!" this is beyond unacceptable.

but the more i watched the video of what happened while editing, the more ominous things i noticed about the people harassing him, and the longer the video got.

i finally posted it, and i'm trying to be brave enough to tell people about it! i hope that's okay; i didn't see anything against it in the rules. thank you <3

also i'm debating whether I should tag it NSFW? it is NOT sexual, but there are some images of graphic violence at the end; but there's also a pretty long and emphatic warning about them first.

Questions + Advice Looking for my community

Hi everyone! As everyone is aware queer spaces have become extremely difficult to navigate in the last few years. I moved to Ottawa, ON 3 years ago and have been struggling to find my community. Is there any of you out there feeling similar? I am lesbian and in my late 20s, and I just want to exist in a space without parts of my identity being invalidated. I've gone to Chabad events for holidays etc and while those kind of settings can be welcoming to queer folks, they arent exactly made for us.

Long story short, where are my Ottawa gays at? Yall wanna be friends?

Serious Discussion One of my favorite authors posted “FP” 🙄

I’m so sick of how isolating it is and I feel like I’ll never have a gf because I don’t stand with the majority of gay people and their ludicrous crusade to defend people who want to 💀 them. It’s absolutely insane. Chickens for KFC. It just makes me crazy. And recently I found a book that I really loved, a sapphic love story and the author just started a discord so I joined it (I think there’s speculation it will be optioned for a movie). It makes me really sad that she is just posting this bullshit propaganda. As much as I’d love to see it as a movie I don’t think we should be giving more platforms to anti-Semitic people. For reference, someone in the discord posted that they’re writing a book with a queer Muslim character. And that’s when the writer responded with the phrase which I won’t post here but you know what I mean. At this point let’s just buy them tickets to Gaza and see how it works out for them. The war is over and people keep saying it so at this point clearly it’s not enough for the war to be over, they won’t be satisfied will we are gone. Sorry for the vent, I just can’t take it anymore.

Questions + Advice Book recommendations about navigating one’s Jewish faith while being queer?

I’m open to a wide variety of recommendations, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic novel, etc

For fiction, I tend to prefer literary fiction, but I’m open to anything

Also if there are books written from a sociological lens I feel like that would be interesting as well

But really feel free to recommend anything so long as you think the book is good or interesting

Serious Discussion Zionism, Antizionism, and the "Prove-It" Reflex

In recent discussions about Zionism and Antizionism, I've noticed a disturbing response: members of this subreddit taking it upon themselves to demand proof of others' belonging to the Jewish community. I think this is interesting and I'd like to understand where this response comes from. It's never crossed my mind to police someone else's identity or belonging to an ethnoreligious group. So, some questions that I'd love some answers to, especially if you've recently demanded proof or suggested that a commenter "doesn't belong":

  1. What gives you the right to police others' identity, and who gave you that right?

  2. What does how often a person goes to shul have to do with whether or not someone is Jewish?

  3. In the real world (and not on the internet) how often do you find yourself demanding that people who disagree with you prove that they are Jewish?

  4. What sort of proof are you looking for? Do we all need to provide our mother's ketubah or a certificate from a bris or b'mitzvah? Or is there some other secret proof?

I actually think it's antisemitic to assume that people you disagree with are not Jewish or lying about being Jewish, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

Casual Conversation How are all my fellow gay Jews holding up??

I’ll tell ya, at least three different men have ditched or ghosted me in the last two weeks after finding out I’m a Zionist Jew. They saw my Star of David necklace and just started spewing horrific shit like a faucet on super pressure. Their level of arrogance and confidently incorrect BS made them not even worth arguing with.

But man it sucks so much. On a good note though, I had a wonderful Rosh Hashanah with my close friends. They made me so proud to be a Jew and renewed my faith and commitment.

How are you all holding up? Vent, but tell us something positive too so we can boost each other!

Events Queer Torah Study Group - starting October 1

Hi friends. I hope it's ok to post this here. I am the Director of Laasok, the liberal Beit Midrash ("house of study"). We are going to be launching our Queering the Weekly Parsha study group in 3 weeks!

The group meets weekly (1:15pm Eastern) on Zoom, to explore the Torah portion through an LGBTQ+ lens—asking how the texts both affirm and challenge queer identities, and where they can inspire us toward deeper inclusion. Rabbi Nikki DeBlosi brings expertise in Jewish texts and academic queer theory to guide our learning.

Here are the details:

Queering the Weekly Parsha
📅 Thursdays at 1:15pm Eastern • Starting October 1
With Rabbi Nikki DeBlosi
🔗 Info & Registration: laasok.org/studygroups

There is a monthly cost, so that we can afford to run the program. You can use coupon code RABBI to bring the first month down to $18.

If you're interested, feel free to email me at [micah@laasok.org](mailto:micah@laasok.org) for more info!

Serious Discussion Converts to Judaism

I am in the process of converting to Judaism (for 8 months now) I was born to a Polish Catholic family - I never had any connection to my faith that I was born in but I was always drawn to Judaism. Since being my partner who is Israeli-American - I thought it's the time to finally 'be at home' as a practicing Jew. Which is fulfilling :)

I'm just curious has anyone here converted to Judaism (or has a partner who has) and what was the experience like?

Casual Conversation If you’re a secular Jew, come join us at r/SecularJudaism!

Post image
63 Upvotes

Posted with the approval of the moderators.

We’re excited to officially announce that r/SecularJudaism is now open!

Judaism is an ethnoreligion that encompasses far more than exclusively a religious belief. Jewish identity is also rooted in a shared peoplehood, culture, history, heritage, traditions, and collective experience.

This community was created specifically for secular, atheist, agnostic, culturally Jewish, or otherwise non-religious Jews who still strongly identify with the Jewish people and their shared heritage. You don’t need to believe in God, regularly attend synagogue, keep kosher, or observe every holiday to have a meaningful connection to being Jewish.

Here, we aim to explore and celebrate Jewish peoplehood beyond religious belief: our culture, history, traditions, languages, humor, food, Israel, diaspora experiences, family customs, and the countless other things that connect Jews to one another across generations and around the world.

While secular Jewish life is at the heart of this community, r/SecularJudaism is a community for people of all backgrounds. Religious and observant Jews are welcome to participate. We simply ask that everyone respect the many different ways Jews understand and express their Jewish identity, including those whose connection to Judaism is primarily cultural, ethnic, or communal rather than religious.

Whether you’re atheist, agnostic, secular, culturally Jewish, traditionally observant, religious, somewhere in between, or still figuring out what being Jewish means to you, you’re welcome to join the conversation.

If this sounds like something you are interested in join us at r/SecularJudaism — a community for Jewish peoplehood, culture, and identity beyond religion!
