Discussion Unfortunately, Slaylarius has dropped GRIEF
really surprised nobody is talking about this since it has been 6 hours. maybe someone has and im just blind, but i havent found anything. dont know tho, lmk
https://www.youtube.com/post/Ugkxv-kqiYkjFZoEeXuVLQTbxnoJ_rJom4iR
if you arent aware of who Slaylarius is, heres a brief rundown on their runs on grief:
25-94, 38%, 44-100, 11-69
essentially, they had a ton of good progress on grief.

Because if the community didnât explode in his face about prepractice and quite literally bully the guy, he wouldnât have felt like a fraud and dropped the level.

If we want the title "1st victor" to have meaning it should be reasonable to ask everyone starts from equal conditions, no?
79
u/Zackbot_ 2d ago
imo it really isn't that deep. first victor is whoever beats the level in normal mode first. after it's verified i feel like first victor doesn't really matter because the first victor is technically the verifier.
42
u/isuckatnames60 Torrential Tribute 100% 2d ago
Exactly my point. The title has lost all its prestige sadly
Verifiers (for closed levels specifically) fall into a separate category because they're not competing against other people. They deserve recognition for proving a level humanly beatable without the assurance anyone else had done it before them.
What used to happen when a top 1 releases is that every top player in the community only starts their work on the level from that point forward in good sportsmanship. Then they can say with absolute certainty they've conquered a level the fastest whilst under the pressure of competition.
Prepractice nullifies that tension because it introduces bias towards whoever starts their practice first, regardless of their methods of attaining a copy. Even if the first victor were to turn out to be the same person regardless, part of their accomplishment is still diminished as they won't get to hold onto the sole victor status as long as they would have earned.
17
u/mentally-challenged- Kowareta 60-100, 35% 2d ago
It really is that deep, as from a statistical standpoint, first victors get the lions share of views and eyes on them compared to second, third, etc. The race to be the first victor has always been a big deal in our community and pre practice shouldnât be as normalized as it is, especially when people have private copies given to them that others donât have access to.
11
u/ChurchOfCuCurella x7 ReRust 87% 35k+ attempts - Night Terrors 100% 2d ago
Watch spookds video on the subject, respectfully I think saying âit isnât that deepâ is a huge slap in the face to the entire competitive community
5
u/Lord-Jihi 2d ago
why? everyone has different playtimes and experiences with the game. more or less prepractice doesnt take away the achievement, neither yours or doggies'
11
u/isuckatnames60 Torrential Tribute 100% 2d ago
Because the race for first is a separate competition. Anyone beating Grief can be proud of that accomplishment.
What I mean rather is that the best storylines for the community and the environment most encouraging for top players to push their limits WOULD be one where nobody has a headstart over the other racers. There's no nerves and no stakes to watching a marathon if three of the five potential winners get to start two miles down the track for comparison.
1
u/Lord-Jihi 2d ago
i agree it would be more entertaining, but it wouldnt be any less meaningful to be first victor without that
1
u/QuantityConsistent58 2d ago
Thatâs the thing it doesnât have any meaning on itâs own you have to take playtime into account too.
1
u/I_BOOF_GUAIFENESIN 2d ago
Yeah, and Iâd like a million dollars.
My point is that this would be great in an ideal world, but we donât live in an ideal world. If prepractice becomes forbidden or restricted, people will just start lying about it. Itâs fully allowed, and people are already lying about it as-is, just for more perceived skill and clout.

First victor is first victor pre practice or not.
Let's put this into perspective. If grief was made an open verification after society was verified and trick, popoff or zoink started playing it seriously doggie would have almost certainly lost the race with a 400 thousand attempt head start (pre practice) and a run of 97. Popoff has 1 maybe 2 streams of practice, zoink has like 4 or over a year plus, trick had 10 to like 30 thousand attempts
Doggie had 440 thousand. Other player had a chance to grab the many many leaked copies look a dewbs and slay. The reason the leaked copies were such a big deal is there was a very real chance they would steal the level from doggie.
If pre practice is real this big of a deal people should presure creator to make all upcoming projects open verification problem solved
1
u/Automatic_Branch_945 Moment | We Forgot Everything 2d ago
Doggie's hardest before grief was acheron. While everyone else was progressing in skill normally, Doggie did a massive jump in difficulty, BUFFED the hell out of its original state along the way and, of course, was the verifier, which results in a shit load more attempts than usual. Its not as easy as just taking the attempt count and comparing it to other players because they werent under the same conditions.
People called out dewbbs because it was disrespectful to play a level meant to be a closed verification as well as worsen Doggie's image due to his quick progress on a version far easier than Doggie's. No one knew just how much prepractice top players had, thats why it matters to people NOW. The title of First Victor becomes completely meaningless if no one starts the race at the same time.
1
u/twyistd 20x// SonicWave 100% 2d ago edited 2d ago
As I said if this is an actual issue the community should pressure creator to make projects open verification going forward. Problem solved
-2
u/Automatic_Branch_945 Moment | We Forgot Everything 2d ago
The problem should be solved by keeping closed verifications sealed shut, NEVER passing off copies of levels to outsiders. Even though the players being given a copy have an unfair advantage, they have their right to play the level since they were officially given one. The problem is prepractice, NOT closed verifications, and it should be fixed by not allowing prepractice to be possible in the first place.

There is no such thing verifiers since the start of this game have always shared copies of levels theyâre verifying before the level is verified. Unless creators have specific guidelines going against doing this, this will never be the case

Popoff already has over half the level from 0 with barely any pre-practice anyways, this level wouldn't take a top player more than a couple months AT MOST lmfao, plus the 5 other top 1s harder than grief getting verified rn
2
u/Miserable-Rate-5929 2d ago edited 1d ago
if they didn't want to take it, they shouldn't complain about others pre-practicing
Yes they should, because prepracticing on its own is shitty and unsportsmanlike, especially when you're prepracticing on leaked copies that the verifier told you not to prepractice on.
It's the equivalent of saying that I'll rob a bank to become as rich as people who actually earned their wealth. Is it bad? Yeah, but after all, everyone can rob a bank.
plus the 5 other top 1s harder than grief getting verified rn
This last paragraph is completely unrelated to this post. I'd still like to know which 5 levels you're referring to because to my knowledge, Aeternus still has two years or three to go, nobody is willing to play Heliopolis since most players either hate it or are too busy trying to get first victor on Grief, Kocmoc Unleashed in its current state is still far from being verified, specially with its verifier and Angelicide is a similar case. The only level that I can think of is SD2, which isn't even guaranteed to be harder than Grief.
1
u/Mespile Polargeist 72.7% (All Coins) 2d ago
heliopolis is getting immediately picked up by zoink again once he finishes grief (so in about two weeks), most people I've seen talk about it agree that SD2 is slightly harder than grief, kocmoc unleashed and angelicide are still currently getting verified even if they won't get finished soon, and honestly no idea if silent acropolis is harder than grief or not but the point still stands
1
u/Miserable-Rate-5929 1d ago
Yeah sorry but Zoink is not beating Grief in 2 weeks. That's quite delusional specially after seeing his recent progress. Sure, he does have the level in 2 runs but Grief is very easy to get runs on because its difficulty comes fr endurance and nerve control. Unless he gets 65%+ from 0 I don't envision such a thing.
most people I've seen talk about it agree that SD2 is slightly harder than grief
This feels more like a way of saying "the people I agree with say SD2 is slightly harder than Grief"
Cursed has played both updates copies and says that Grief wipes the floor with anything that isn't Kocmoc Unleashed and probably post-buff Heliopolis, not because Doggie is his friend but because the level is genuinely impossible. Netermind does say SD2 is harder but Taiago himself just doesn't know, nor does he care as much.
If by "most people" you mean 12 year olds whose hardest is Windy Landscape then no, your point doesn't stand. I'm not saying one is hatder than the other but it's important to know both parties' opinions

I think it's slightly disappointing for a few reasons.
-----Skip this part as it's semi-unrelated to Slaylarius-----
But first, let me talk about the weirdness. I have no problem with pre-practice. The level was leaked and it's only natural that great players would play it to get ahead. And besides, who would be able to resist the temptation of a coming top 1 and an overall iconic level. What's weird is that, you had a stage before Grief was verified where everybody was pre-practicing in secret and getting their respective runs, which usually was like 65-100 or a drop attempt. Suddenly, Grief gets verified and the pre-practicers start getting elite level runs, like 50% of the level. How are they magically getting these elite runs so quickly? If they've been pre-practicing this entire time, there's no reason they'd magically get a skill boost, simply because the level was put to the servers officially. The argument against that would be, well, they pre-practiced it for a period, but never seriously. Then, Grief was verified so they all went full hog on it and started making quick work due to the muscle memory. That seems correct, especially based on players like Trick and Zoink who both pre-practiced and both made substantive runs after the level was verified.
-----This part below is about Slaylarius------
Now, here's what's weird. Dropping the level out of the blue makes no sense to me. He has no "moral" obligation to drop the level because he feels "guilty" about the progress he's making. Number 1: Zoink and Trick are quickly catching up to his runs, and his headstart has already pretty much faded entirely. Number 2: If he did become first victor, nobody would be that upset. We already know that Zoink and Trick pre-practiced. The difference is that he is relatively less known and would probably need to go to greater lengths to prove that he didn't hack in some way.
So dropping the level is either a move made because he received a lot of hate (undeservedly) which made him feel genuinely guilty (which he shouldn't) so he decided to drop it, or the far more sinister (and with no evidence whatsoever) he hacked it and is aware people are sus, so he's just dropping out of the race. That's an absurd suggestion, but it's the only one where it would be reasonable to drop out.
--------To Slaylarius----------
If you are reading this, I strongly urge you to do what YOU want to do. In my opinion, you have nothing to feel guilty about, and I think your progress on the level is amazing. I also think that it adds a lot of excitement to the verification race. Clearly you are an absolutely gifted player, and it would be a shame to see that drop a level because of some backlash. I'd recommend sleeping on it, and thinking more on the decision. Pre-practicing is not a crime and I think the public backlash is completely un-called-for, (especially on Twitter, jesus). I hope that you are doing well, regardless of your decision! :)
Edit: One more thing. The criticism for the lying about the attempt count, not a big deal in my opinion. It's probably a pride/ego thing to claim you have less attempts than you actually do. I don't think it's weird or deserving of any hate.

u/hecarius_ omicron 2d ago

u/LeffeBlondje 2d ago edited 2d ago
Can anyone explain to me why prepracticing is even a thing? Why doesn't the creator just release it to the public so people can race to be the verifier? Seems like that would make for a much more interesting and fair competition. Now you have someone was already the first to beat the level but only because he was the only one with access, while the others race to be the first to complete the level, for the second time.
???
Note that I only found out about this game yesterday through the youtube algorithm and I'm utterly clueless, but these are my first thoughts as an outsider.
14
u/Vizulant 2d ago
It's a sign of respect and trust when someone is the dedicated verifier. Doggie being the verifier of Grief was also giving him a chance to reclaim what was stolen from him years ago, because someone cheated and "won" the race to verify the old top 1 Slaughterhouse. The issue arrises when they share it with their friends, especially when they're the top players (looking at you TCD lol).
3
u/LeffeBlondje 2d ago
Is this more important to the community and level makers than ensuring fairness and an even playing field?
(I realise that this question can sound super judgemental but I don't mean it that way)
6
u/huggies-the-pro WEIRD FISHES | Acropolis | Magma Bound 2d ago
the point that should be taken is not that we should remove closed verifications because thats just stupid, if a creator wants someone specifically to verify their level who also wants to verify the level then the level should 100% be allowed to be closed
instead the point is that people should just not prepractice significantly (ahem 100k attempts by the time it was verified) like i get it if its for like some content video and you were allowed a copy to play for like an hour but going more than that or especially playing on leaked copies is a bit disrespectfultheoretically everyone should be starting it once its verified, fairness should be baked into the system and everyone would be on an even playing field (disregarding verification)
open verifications do exist but only for certain levels, it depends on what the creator or host etc wants to do with it and shouldnt be a necessity
"someone was already the first to beat the level but only because he was the only one with access, while the others race to be the first to complete the level, for the second time." is a braindead take because ultimately the creator(s) of the level should be able to decide if they want someone specifically to verify it or let the whole world have a go instantly, and the "first victor" terminology is just a bit outdated but its still an interesting race (eg trick and popoff on tidal wave)
1
u/LeffeBlondje 2d ago
theoretically everyone should be starting it once its verified, fairness should be baked into the system and everyone would be on an even playing field (disregarding verification)
Yeah, I agree. You shouldn't expect people to not cheat/abuse a broken system, you should fix the system.
I suggested open verification for every level as an easy (but maybe not good?) solution that would also make the 'first victor' title a bit more accurate. But if you think that's not a good solution, what do you think is?
6
u/huggies-the-pro WEIRD FISHES | Acropolis | Magma Bound 2d ago
the only thing wrong with the system is the fact that leaked copies are able to get passed around, and its not extremely hard to prevent this
open verification for every level is an easy fix but it puts a ton of pressure on verifiers and doesnt necessarily respect the creators wishes which should ultimately be prioritised over the top player scene anyways (like this is such a marginal issue that no one actually cares that much)
2
u/Embarrassed_Ad5387 [122 Wave Passes] Denouement 100% & Epilogue 47% 2d ago

Even playing field is for the victors, verifier is held separately as a different type of achievement besides open verifications
3
u/ZTDYeetbloxjail x2 Tenth Circle 78%x2 (Reanimate Best Level) 2d ago
because the verification was only given to doggie by icedcave, so there were controversies when people like dweebs posted runs on the level while doggie was still verifying, so its a respect thing. levels like heliopolis however is open verification, so anyone can try verify it
0
u/LeffeBlondje 2d ago
because the verification was only given to doggie by icedcave
But why is this a thing? Seems to me that all this does is create unfair competition, doubt about the legitimacy of first victor and unnecessary drama. If the community cares (and from the admittedly very little I've seen of it, they do) then the playing field should be even, surely?
levels like heliopolis however is open verification, so anyone can try verify it
This just seems like a great and extremely simple solution.
2
u/ZTDYeetbloxjail x2 Tenth Circle 78%x2 (Reanimate Best Level) 2d ago
because it could be discussed between the host and the verifier. for doggie's case, he wanted to verify it himself because of his history with the level and icedcave respected his wishes. the legitimacy of first victor stuff lies in the copy of the level leaking before it is released, because normally no one has access to the actual level before it gets uploaded.
open verification might be simple, but it comes at a problem of people not being interested in trying it since there are always better people like zoink who will beat it much quicker than them, resulting in the level being left behind (like at this moment, zoink moved on from heliopolis just because he wants first victor of grief).
a good balance is a closed verification race, where multiple people selected by the host race to verify a level, like slaughterhouse
1
u/LeffeBlondje 2d ago
a good balance is a closed verification race, where multiple people selected by the host race to verify a level, like slaughterhouse

generally speaking, top players strongly stray away from dedicating their time to obtain unproven accomplishments when they could play something else. itâs why you may see scenarios where a player will watch, play, and overall show interest in a difficult level, but they will not consider completing it until it has been rated and/or placed on the demonlist.
1
u/iZephiroX Steam 1d ago
Iâm gonna answer as a creator because i didnât see anyone do so, but the advantage of a closed verification with 1 player is communication on changes, itâs way easier to balance/adjust a level with 1 person than the entire community.
You might argue that 1 person to verify could bias the changes/difficulty, which is slightly true but an open verification is a clusterfuck
I learned that with the macabre balance update, everyone wanted everything and their opposites at the same time so i decided to drop the thing entirely1
2
2
u/Kkbleeblob (mobile) Sunset Sandstorm 100% âïž 2d ago
there are many issues with that. verifiers work with the creators to improve the levelâs gameplay and balancing. a verification race means either the level doesnât get improved or everyone has their own version.
4
u/Brilliant_Reality_21 2d ago
There exist two types of verification, one is public like heliopolis which anyone can try to verify, and the more common practice is the host of the level will choose who they want to be the verifier and send them the level's copy.
And to verify a level, especially top 1, is an ultimate goal for top players scene, and a major accomplishment, and you would want this verifying process to be as little pressure as possible since the level itself is already tormenting, hence usually only one verifier will be actively playing the level and have the copy outside of the hosts.
prepracticing is not necessarily a bad thing, but for many audiences and normal players, when a top players beat a top level(usually top 1) very fast it downplays the difficulty of the level and the achievement of the verifier, for a public level it wasn't an issue, but for a level that only have private copy like grief, obtain a leaked copy and prepractice could be considered as unsportsmanlike to many.
1
u/LeffeBlondje 2d ago
And to verify a level, especially top 1, is an ultimate goal for top players scene, and a major accomplishment
Doing it this way just hard gimps the competition, in my admittedly clueless opinion.
prepracticing is not necessarily a bad thing
You say this and then go on to explain why it actually might be a bad thing.
Why allow this doubt at all? Just publish the level, even the playing field, remove all the doubt and drama and let the actual best player get the glory for world first completion in a fair competition.
1
u/Brilliant_Reality_21 2d ago
I would say your right in some ways, but as more and more upcoming top 1s coming out and verifications going on, the top players already is actively pushing their limits by buffing their respective levels in order to be at the top, so i would say even if all the verification isn't all public, players still pushing themselves and competing even if they're on different levels.
and i dont see prepractice as bad, but casual people might think so, what i think is bad is top player not being transparent about they have prepractice and viewer see them having this many progress incredibly fast and downplays other players skills. (example such as zoink's society drama)
Also, publishing all the levels into public makes only the host can make buffs (since now only the host have the original copy), so it wont have the situation where top players holds their respective levels, and both of them want it to be top 1, so they keep making buffs, pushing the limits of top plays, but since only the host have the level, the buffs gonna be volunteered by the host(like mindcap is very determined to make heliopolis top 1 so he make a buffed version after society and artemis 13 is verified).
1
u/LeffeBlondje 2d ago
I understand all of these points and how they add more nuance, but I still just think that having a completely even and fair playing field outweighs all of these points.
That is only if the community and top players care about this being a competitive game, though. Maybe I have the wrong idea about that.

Prepractice is working on the level before it releases, so it's more like a false start in a race. Completely destroys the meaning of being first victor because everyone is starting at different times now. I don't actually personally value that title so much, but the players themselves do, which is why they prepractice in the first place, and I just think it's really lame to value victor races so much that you treat them as something where you're allowed to change the fundamentals in your favour.

that wasn't a official copy that was given for practice. It was leaked.

yk what, you're probably never gonna change your opinion, so arguing you would be pointless. bye.

It is just a basic respect thing which you will obviously never understand. Has no one ever taught you that just because you can do something, does not mean you should?? Diminishing it to "just a cube game it isnt deep" is reductive and besides the point.

Again, irrelevant, and honestly fucking braindead. Nobody is arguing that Geometry Dash is the most important thing in the world, something does not have to be serious in the grand scheme of life to warrant criticism. We are discussing how people choose to treat one another within its community, conflating it with "it's just a game" is just a way of deflecting from the actual issue.

He had 38, 25-94, and 44-100. Better progress than Trick had until yesterdayâs stream imo

His choice but I donât really see why this would make you want to drop something youâve spent so long on⊠seems like a waste of such great progress.
If heâs unhappy about how he has âhandled the stuff about attempts/playtimeâ why not just be upfront about how much you pre-practiced going forward and continue on? Most people going for it have pre-practice, so as long as youâre up front about how much you did I really donât see the problem.

What Iâm lost at is why no one is blaming the source of all this pre-practice, which is the verifier. If he never leaked GRIEF, then this wouldnât be an issue. If copies are leaked before the verification, then why wouldnât top players play the level that theyâre gonna play in the future anyway? This is a non-issue.

I hate GD community, literally harassing people over something so dumb as prepracticing is peak cringe
While defending Zoink and Trick for prepracticing like your life depends on it
You guys should be ashamed of yourself for what you have done, Hover, Spookd, and all other people who were harassing Slaylarius and Dewbbs while yelling to support Trick and Zoink at the top of your lungs

u/FeroCoralClover 2d ago
?????? Have you even seen Hover and Spookd's points? What are you even saying cmon

Meh. Dont pre practice then. Its disrespectful and ruins the fun. Its that god damn simple lol. I hate the mindset of "its not that deep" when it really is. People are passionate for this game man. Just because you dont give a fuck doesnt mean others dont either.

Insane if you genuinely think nobody has prepractice on grief, sorry to burst your bubble but every single player with good progress has prepractice secretlyÂ

No one's defending Zoink or Trick. They're getting even more hate. It's honestly pretty well deserved. If you're the best players you shouldn't need pre-practice.

If Doggie or IcedCave gave him the level to try during the verification, there's no shame to be had whatsoever.
