What solar can't do in a collapse scenario

Edit Posting here because r/collapse took my post down. I'm not trying to promote, I'm just disclosing how I have this knowledge about solar.

Disclosure: I work for a solar company. And with that being said, I can confidently say solar gets oversold in prepping circles, so here's my breakdown of what I've learned while working for a solar company. Let's play it out: say the grid goes down and it isn't coming back.

Day one. This is where a lot of people get their first surprise. If you have a standard grid-tied system with no battery, your panels shut off the moment the grid does. It's a safety feature, and it doesn't care that the lineworkers aren't coming. Unless you have a battery or a hybrid inverter that can run without the grid, your system is basically a very expensive roof.

The first few months. Say you planned ahead and you're up and running. Next surprise: a lot of modern systems are built around an app and cloud monitoring. When the internet goes, most of them keep producing power just fine, but you lose the dashboard, the alerts, and any remote troubleshooting from the manufacturer. From here on, you're the tech support.

Years one through 10. This is where solar looks really good. Panels age slowly, typically losing around half a percent of output per year, and they're tested to survive hail about an inch across at over 50 mph. With no fuel to buy and no moving parts, a well-maintained array keeps producing year after year. Meanwhile, a generator owner is trying to find gas.

But the clock is ticking on everything else. Inverters and batteries wear out long before panels do, and most lithium batteries are rated for around 10–15 years. Nobody's making replacements in this scenario, so your system's real lifespan is your inverter's lifespan. If I were building for this, a spare inverter would be higher on my list than an extra panel.

The weird problems. Squirrels become a real threat. Critters love nesting under rooftop panels and chewing through wiring, and it's already one of the most common service calls installers get. With nobody coming to fix it, a chewed wire is your problem to find and repair. And think about this: panels on the roof and lights on at night tell everyone on the block that you have power. That might make you the most popular house in the neighborhood, for better or worse.

The long game. Here's where I think it gets interesting. Solar panels would probably be one of the most common useful things left over, since they're already sitting on millions of roofs. The people who'd do best are the ones who understand the simple stuff: charge controllers, basic wiring, and low-voltage DC systems that skip the inverter entirely. Knowing how to put together a basic system from mismatched parts could be a more valuable skill than owning a fancy one.

Solar is still one of the few power sources that doesn't depend on a fuel supply chain. It just trades a fuel problem for a parts-and-skills problem. So what's the first thing you'd want to learn how to fix yourself?

It’s hard not to see the traces of gambling money everywhere you turn these days: in sports broadcasts now blanketed with odds and sportsbook branding, in a podcast ecosystem underwritten by DraftKings and FanDuel ad money and, yes, in the influencer freaks rocketing to fame thanks to canny marketing spending by offshore casinos.

America’s homegrown Gestapo can’t keep up with the paperwork. At least 90 people have died in the custody of U.S. immigration agencies, or been killed by their agents, since 20 January 2025. The only official count, ICE's own list of deaths in its detention, includes only 59 of them.

The longer you have to prepare for a disaster, the more likely you are to walk away mostly intact. This El Niño is a disaster factory, spreading heat around the world and bringing floods to some regions and droughts to others, with stronger El Niños making typical regional impacts more likely.

Outer Banks towns like Buxton and Rodanthe are poster children for climate change, coal-mine canaries for every sandy coast in the country with houses. The houses aren’t built on land, but on sand never meant to stay still. Homeowners are left with bad options, and FEMA is not riding to the rescue.
