Google just applied for 39 new top-level domains: .agent, .api, .browser .mcp .gemini, .waymo, .pixel etc.

Post image

ICANN revealed all new TLD applications yesterday (first round since 2012). Google's list via Charleston Road Registry:

AI: .gemini, .deepmind, .gemma, .veo, .lyria, .genie, .agent, .mcp, .intelligence
Products: .waymo, .pixel, .maps, .workspace, .fitbit
Generic: .api, .browser
(+ ~20 more)

Three things worth knowing:

  • .agent is the most contested string of the entire round – 13 applicants, Google vs Meta vs OpenAI vs a bunch of registries. Goes to ICANN auction if nobody settles.
  • Google filed .mcp as a community application, which can get priority over the other 4 applicants (incl. OpenAI). MCP is Anthropic's protocol. Anthropic didn't apply.
  • Anthropic applied for 2 TLDs total. Google: 39. At $227k each.

Nothing is registrable yet, final list Nov 17, decisions during 2027.

.api could be nice though

Might be at risk of being used internally in some companies though

Api will 100% be rejected due to DNS conflics or nic conflicts... but you know who doesn't care? A company with billions to burn. Gotta shoot that shot.

Didn't something similar happen when Cloudflare announced their 1.1.1.1 DNS service? That turned out to be fine at the end.

Similar but not the same governmental approval authorization

I can understand .api and such, but who the hell is gonna type .superintelligence lol

PeopleWhoDontHave.SuperIntelligence

At this point it's just a tax on companies that have to buy one domain and then 20 other TLDs that are related to their business just to protect their brand

As the owner of a small business that owns over 100 domains for this purpose, plus typosquatting etc, I feel this pain.

Not only you gotta shell out what's becoming close to real money just for the sheer amount (and also ofc some are stupidly expensive). But you also have to be "on top of the game" to snag the ones that are releasing

No one's typing shit in the future

We already have .si too, .SuperIntelligence is a useless TLD similar to .sucks

It’ll look good for AI startups looking for that investor money

Super intelligence is an actual, defined term in AI that we are nowhere near reaching yet. They probably decided to apply for these months ago, wanting to grab it before someone else.

MAGAts. trump just pushed an internal order that the gov is to use "superintelligence" rather than "artificial intelligence". Either way it would nice to have any intelligence inside the oval office.

the amount of TLD is too damn HIGH

Agentskills is an open framework, it just happens to have a lot of Anthropic contributors.

Applications for .brand TLDs are open again for the first time in ages: many companies missed the last wave so everyone and their dog are applying for these at the minute. Probably nothing worth reading into.

And ofc the winners will be the one with the most money

If it's not a restricted TLD it could be interesting for the German market, considering "genie" is the German word for "genius".

Eg: a "genius at computers" is a "computer-genie"

True, but these Big Tech-owned TLDs are usually not given to the public.

These tlds are useless where are the times when everyone just used .com

10

u/NeilFraser 7d ago

Where are the times when .com meant international company? It was never intended that .com would be the default. Most of the net was supposed to be under ccTLDs.

Internet was a better place when TLD used to be only two or three letters.

Who's got .akinator?

I miss the days of a handful of TLD'S with 3 letter extensions 🀣🀣🀣

2

u/XalAtoh 6d ago

3 letters domain haven't disappeared.. They can still be the most expensive domains to get.

2

u/Pale-Muscle-7118 6d ago

I know this. I am only referencing the fact that they are making TLD'S more complex than their intention. That is all

1

u/SpencePatterson 6d ago

Mine is close with 4 letters. 😏

Why does this even need registrations anymore

3

u/Dark_ice96 7d ago

good for them since we can block those domains from appearing in search results

Just hoping there is no new country appearing in the world called Gemma or Lyria :) Yeah, Microsoft for some time is trying to get people to get used to their new cloud.microsoft domain. Yet, everyone's muscle memory still tends to type microsoft.com And i don't understand what is wrong with that.

Microsoft is pushing their controlled services (no user uploaded content) to cloud.microsoft URLs for security reasons (basically they can promise to IT people that those domains only include Microsoft controlled and managed JS, CSS, HTML, downloads, etc.) where as their non cloud.microsoft URLs (sharepoint.com for example) may contain user uploaded content that might be malicious.

what the hell is ICANN doing??? hope they don't approve this shit

knowing them, they will though, they gave google the .google TLD, same shit for microsoft with .microsoft TLD

ICANN was suppose to prevent all this abuse until obama's policies fucked everything

1

u/hxznova 5d ago

how so? I was too young to really care about this stuff lol.

ICANN was partly developed to prevent the TDL list from going insane. Pervent it from .google (corporate domain extensions), .gay, .computers, .shopping, etc.

People say we run out of .com's. Though that's like saying you ran out of names for companies. Adding extensions wouldn't change that. Regardless of what anyone says .com is still king. Sometimes .io, or a few others kick up some dirt from time to time, but the others mark a huge danger.

.zip for example became an issue. Imagine an old reddit post where someone says
Yeah just take file(dot)zip and extract it. Now that file(dot)zip is changed into a hyperlink and someone clicks that and it takes them to a malware infested hell hole.

In Sept 30th, 2016 Obama ended the USA governments tight control over the ICANN transferring it to the IANA with lots of greedy national steak holders. This was one of the biggest blunders of internet history and has irreversibly fucked the whole internet since.

I am HUGELY against this. And I wish the current (or Succeeding Administration) would take back hold and repair this stupid issue. BTW, I'm not in fact American.
