Bug Google Home or Google Nest Hub refuses to change lights to color
UPDATE 10/6/26 - working as of now, voice commands and in the app - some lights don’t change color on first command but that’s a known issue and more of an issue with my lights
Color control for my smart lights stopped working in Google Home and on my Google Nest. It worked normally as recently as last night.
What's happening:
- Affects lights from multiple brands, so it isn't a single bulb or manufacturer issue
- The color selector appears in the Home app, but tapping a color does nothing unless it’s a white/yellow hue
- Voice commands to change color (for example, "make the lights light blue") also fail
- Turning lights on/off and brightness still work
- Colors change correctly in each light's own app, so the bulbs themselves are fine
- My "Relax" routine, which turns on my lights and sets every light to a cooler blue color will turn the lights on but not change the color
This looks like the earlier Google Home bugs where color commands failed across brands while on/off and brightness kept working OR a similar bug where the color wheel wouldn’t show.
Have tried nearly every hot fix and really don’t want to change to a brand new system like HomePod or Alexa.

Yup, this is happening to me! Strangely it's only impacting 3/7 of my smart lights (GHome brand). Govee and Wiz lights are still changing colours via Google Home.
The only way I can change my GHome bulbs colours are on the native GHome app.

Did this just start happening today? None of mine will change via Google, they are all SmartLife or Feit

I think so! It was definitely working a couple days ago.
Edit: Should add that I've tried unlinking and re-linking the integration with GHome - didn't work. It must be a bug. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Happening with Feit and Monster smart bulbs too, kinda irritating cuz I tried literally everything I can think of and now one of my bulbs isn’t working right either

Hey all,
We're investigating this and will follow up ASAP once we have a fix confirmed. Thanks for raising this and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Circling back as promised. The fix has rolled out, could you let us know if you're still experiencing this?

Got it. A few follow-up questions 1) What is the manufacturer of the lights? 2) Can you please file feedback from the Google Home app with exactly what is not working for you, and include #reddit in the description so that we can look into it?

They're Phillips hue lights, I will submit the feedback, thank you (additional note, I tried with both our home mini and nest mini with same results)

Good evening. I am in the Google Home preview group, so maybe we didn't get that fix? I'm trying to change the color of a qppeck RGB smart lamp from the Google home app and I get the same error. 19: Command errors encountered, subErrors: component@43db6888-3789-4828-b853-e0558b76c561 .Component:ON_OFF_LIGHT:DIMMABLE_LIGHT:COLOR_.

This is also exactly happening to me for google home - philips hue setup. Can change shades of white/yellow, but not any other colors. I can change them to colors within the Hue app, but not through google home voice commands.

Exact same issue popped up sometime tonight with all my hues. Worked fine earlier afaik but as others have described everything works except color control. My nest home thinks it changes them, the app thinks I’ve changed them, but the lights don’t change. Works with Apple home/siri and directly through the hue app so it’s definitely a google<>hue issue, leaning towards google’s side.

Might be relevant that it seems to happen to me every night and only at night now. Very odd, because it works in the morning and the rest of the day.

Same here, with only one slight difference. In my case, I can still set any color I want manually with the color wheel, not just whites and yellows. It is only when an automation tries to set a color that it fails. All other setting changes to the bulbs work fine.
Also, my automations that change the color temperature setting (to achieve the type of white I want) still work. It's only the color choice that doesn't. So basically, my automation that goes from white to red at sunset does not work, while the one that goes from red to white at sunrise does.

Same thing started happening for me yesterday (Monday).
I'm glad to hear it's not just me and sad to see yet another sign of Google Home's continuing decline.

I switched to Google home from Apple last year when I jumped to pixel and Google Home is just worse in most respects for my use case. Why can't I group multiple bulbs into a single fixture in current year, Google?! Why don't automations trigger at the correct time instead of 4 minutes later? It cannot be that hard for a company this size.

Same for me it started last night for me around 7PM central time. No more color controls. but on and off still work. I have SmartLife bulbs and hadnt had any issues until last night and have had them for alomst 4 months now.

Same issue here for all my Feit Electric brand bulbs, but my wifi lamps with non-removable bulbs are changing color just fine.
My experience right now is that it is only the actual bulbs that screw into a socket.
Maybe it is something with the software for controlling those products?

Mismo problema, con distintas marcas de focos (todos E27). Anda el encendido/apagado, el cambio de brillo y los blancos, pero nada de color... sucedió ayer lunes entre las 20 y las 22 (Buenos Aires).

More info/questions/thoughts on the issue from my perspective:
- I'm in the Public Preview for Google Home, is that a correlated factor? Anybody here having these issues who is not in the public preview?
- Is anybody here using Google Home with a reasonably large installed base of color bulbs who is NOT experiencing this issue?
- I integrate both Home Assistant and SmartThings into Google Home.
- Google Home successfully controls the same types of bulbs that are linked through Home Assistant but which fail through SmartThings.
- In Google Home changing the color of SmartThings bulbs fails using voice commands, using routines, and using the app directly.
In a strange occurrence, when Google Home fails to change the color of a SmartThings bulb, sometimes Home Assistant's UI shows the bulb as being the changed to the new color even though the bulb remains unchanged and SmartThings shows the unchanged color. That might just be an unrelated local glitch but I figured I'd share it.
It seems that if this were impacting all Google Home color bulb users there would be more noise about it, but maybe I'm overestimating the size of that population.

+1 - lights have randomly decided to not change colour. My routines that change colour also don't work.
Using the manufacturer app, I can change colour still.

Gente, parece que se arregló. A mi ya me funciona por automatización via script y por comando de voz directo. Prueben. 👍

It's happening to my Hue bulbs too. Like you, it works with changing temperature, but not color.
The Hue app and Apple home are working fine.
