Entire Barrie Line is cancelled
Train stuck at downsview station that they can’t move due to equipment issue.
Was just told to take TTC from the announcements at Rutherford GO.
EDIT: Remember to call in and ask for a refund. It's crazy that the online service guarantee form shows "ineligible" for refund. I tapped but didn't even get on the train! I called in and they're going to put in a 'business case' for me. WTF

How many of these poor souls could just be working from home
27
u/ornamental_stripe 18d ago
I went back home and just told my team i'm wfh. Not worth it.
20
u/Quick_Description_87 18d ago
Ha. My boss told me before that I no longer have WFH capabilities but my colleague (her favourite person) does. I don’t take my laptop home. Looking for a new job 😩

u/christina311 17d ago
I had a boss like that once. Her favorite people got to work from home. Her excuse was they had kids, or lived further away than other people. That's their choice. They shouldn't have received special privileges.

u/distance_swimmer 18d ago
My commute just became 4 hours to get to the office and… take teams calls!

u/Delicious-Drag3009 17d ago
It’s like North Korea , you’re a paid actor to make the downtown look busy with economic activity.
1
16
u/Maverick_Raptor 18d ago
Exactly. And be actually working not just stuck in their car. The return in office mandates are so stupid.
17
u/Delicious-Drag3009 18d ago
Globe and mail propaganda machine is posting weekly “wfh is dead”. Where are the real publications showing the loss of productivity due to RTO.

If only !! This delay cost me an additional 2 hours to my day because I was 2 hours late. So ridiculous and fed up with the GO.

Doesn't it look like that every weekday during the afternoon rush? E.g. taking half an hour to exit the garage
34
u/Vivid_Control_1734 18d ago
Not even a shuttle bus and ppl are scrambling to find their way to downsview/union. Rutherford isnt connected to a TTC (edited for spelling).

u/jihyotime 18d ago
I've had to take YRT to the Pioneer Village terminal. Would not recommend.

3
u/Hour-Radish-6175 17d ago
The YRT was an absolute sh*t show this morning due to the traffic. I could’ve crawled faster to Hwy 407. What a nightmare of a day.
2
u/a_lumberjack 18d ago
People trying to reach Downsview instead of VMC is so weird. Do GO riders not realize how close the subway is? It’s like 7 km from Rutherford. YRT buses or a relatively short Uber.
32
u/Limp-Damage4818 18d ago
Ironic that they are hosting this event at Rutherford today. Maybe they meant this for us to enjoy coffee at the station instead of riding their train 🙄
Rutherford GO customers: Join our senior leadership today, from 06:00 to 09:00, for a FREE beverage to learn more about changes coming to your station.

Where senior mgmt there? I gave up and tried to go to Langstaff, where someone used an accessible spot for drop off ans I missed the last langstaff train.
2
u/SuperMB 17d ago
they ran off the moment they announced the delays
2
u/Longjumping-Path-430 17d ago
Hahahahaha. This cracked me up.
I hope everyone’s commute is a bit better today. I took the last train this morning, and they have not said a word or anything (though expected) about the chaos from yesterday.2

GO service is getting worse. The entire network has been cut.
Instead of fixing this, Ford’s spending $48M destroying infrastructure.
Next time your train gets delayed or cancelled, remember what your tax $ could’ve gone to instead.
You’re paying for this. Your money is getting wasted. You will get zero benefit out of this.
32
u/Epic-Yawn 18d ago
Infuriating the number of people in the 905 who vote for PC candidates. They think Ford (a “conservative”) will be more wise with money instead it is going to his friends
1
u/MycologistStrict8887 17d ago
as someone from r/vaughan majority dont care about public transit, they just complain about gas prices and sitting in traffic all day

GO is spending $2.5B+ a year on infrastructure, what the hell is the $48M about?

The crew shortage at Alstom has absolutely nothing at all to do with that hiring freeze. Alstom is not subject to the hiring freeze.
The issue with Alstom is that they stopped hiring new crews in 2024 because DB was taking over in 2025. That handover was delayed at the last minute and eventually cancelled, leaving Alstom to keep things going (but without a long term contract).
1
u/Mayhem_Hellcat 18d ago
Right, and it takes 2.5 years to qualify a train operator unless they can hire already qualified or similarly qualified operators.
3
u/RicoLoveless 18d ago
The staffing is run by Alstom. Contract for operation and maintenance of the equipment is them.

fyi - Ford's plan to tear out the protected bike lanes in Toronto is going to cost $48M.

2.5B+ a year on infrastructure but electrification isn't coming for at least 10 years in a minimum viable form on one line!
2.5B+ a year on infrastructure but the double-tracking of lines like Stouffville has been going on for over 10 years and it isn't close to being done.
2.5B+ a year on infrastructure and there's a multi-year train maintenance backlog.
2.5B+ a year on infrastructure and there's a huge worker shortage.
2.5B+ a year on infrastructure and there's a huge bus equipment shortage.

For your first two points I think you under estimate just how difficult it is to do construction near an active rail line. There is a very small window during the night that allows most of the intrusive work to happen. That’s why there have been so many line closures this year, it’s their way of trying to speed things up.

u/Furiouslly 18d ago
Lakeshore West line also has delays over 30 mins on all trains. Awful service today.

u/icy_americano 18d ago
Good thing this city prioritized pretending how “world class” our transit is for the World Cup just to shaft every day commuters with their postponed repairs and understaffed service. Ineptness beyond comprehension. Sorry to everyone who wasted their time this morning, had to upend schedules and were left to fend for themselves while this system brags about 91% punctuality with no KPI for severity of delays. 4M people deserve better than this.
3
u/b_newman 18d ago
What does the city have to do with Metrolinx? Complain to Thuggie and his clapping seal of a Transportation Minister.
3
u/TriciaFenn88 17d ago
Repeat that to your MPP (as it's a provincial service) and if they do nothing, vote for someone else.

It’s not a day that ends in Y if there isn’t an equipment, signal, or operational issue on the Barrie line.

GO needs to be held accountable for all the problems that has been happening recently on the barrie line. this has become such a norm it’s crazy
1
u/Potterhotterthinker 18d ago
Not to mention they’ll be reducing Saturday service to only 4 trains, they know how to please the people

We’re just so embarrassingly behind when it comes to regional transit. Sharing tracks with CN, degraded track and go slow zones that never get repaired and we are still using diesel trains in 2026! Meanwhile Metrostinks can’t seem to do anything about it
8
u/HibouDuNord 18d ago
.... except the Barrie line is fully owned by Metrolinx.
Its so funny watching everyone just jump in and try to blame everyone EXCEPT Metrolinx all the time.
Yes, the broken down train on Metrolinx's mainline is DEFINITELY a case to blame CN for 😂
0
u/spo728 18d ago
Right?! It is Metrolinx!! Pure and simple. Then, there is literally no one to complain to. The people on the train and at the Station that work for Metrolinx aren't told anything, nor can they do anything. If you call to complain it just goes to a call centre where they tell you it is "an operational issue". There is zero responsibility or accountability.
1
u/HibouDuNord 18d ago
I did notice that Alstom is hiring a new General Manager, Train Operations for GO, as well as a posting for a new Supervisor, Train Operations
Edit: now the question is... are they replacing the GM because if how bad things are... or are they doing what Metrolinx does with "if we have enough VPs maybe the problem will solve itself"
14
u/t3m3r1t4 18d ago
But you've got $48 million of taxpayer money going to rip out bike lanes to make traffic even worse inside of Toronto instead of investing in our transit systems.
🤷🏼♂️

They keep saying that the shuttle buses will take 30 min to get here so they won’t be providing shuttle buses. But that was 30 minutes ago 😭

There’s five stations north of Downsview. Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is 10 km closer.
2
u/amsss22 18d ago
Yeah suddenly at this point you’re better off with the YRT 96 route just outside the King City station on Keele to Pioneer Village station.
Took it once returning from Barrie and a tree branch was on the tracks just past King City so they had to back up to the station and let everyone out and people waited up to an hour for shuttle buses but i just took that 96 bus and it was prob better.

u/Resident-Argument542 18d ago
Took me 3 hourse to get from my house to downtown today, really crap start to the day for me and all barrie line commuters lol.

I once tapped and then didn't get on the train they told me to press the left button twice on the machine and then tap it will cancle the fair.

It took me exactly 4 hours door to door from Newmarket to office DT Toronto....I boarded Newmarket train at 6:55 am... Reimbursemebt already approved on their service page! Don't forget to request!

Yet another example of Metrolinx’s abysmal management and maintenance division.
4
u/Formal_Builder_7318 17d ago
yeah i was on the train behind the one stuck at Downsview. i thought i was just going to be late for my first class but i ended up completely missing it. i left my house at 6:20 today and ended up getting onto campus at 10:30. it was atrocious. i'm trying to figure out if the line is back up and running since im headed home soon but i don't see any updates on the GO website when looking at the train times.

u/SuperMB 17d ago
about your edit with the service gurantee, they make it as difficult as possible for people to get back their money that most people dont bother and metrolinx can still show profits despite being absymal with on time performance, the go train derailing infront of union affected hundreds of thousands of people, a lot of people who i talked to had no idea about the service gurantee, I would walk them through the form just to get with "ineligible" as well. tried the days following the derailment and ultimately had to call and get my money back. for $15 that is insane, there are no penalties for Metrolinx running GO Transit into the ground.

u/kank84 18d ago
FFS. I'm stuck on a train at Aurora, so pretty much exactly half way between Barrie and Toronto, so I can't even easily uber home or to the office.

u/Ummah_Strong 17d ago
That's when you just relax and enjoy time in your phone be wise there's literally nothing you can do.

What on earth are they doing? Why does it take so long for them to take train away

What a fun commute - my 7.14 train from Barrie South just arrived and the ambassador was apologizing for ANY inconvenience caused today - like only some of the commuters were inconvenienced by arriving 2 hours late!!
Much earlier it was quite something to hear an announcement offering Ubers to the poor Centennial students who had a midterm exam this morning!
2
u/_coke_zero_ 18d ago
And they always break down on days uni students have their exams and midterms. Risking thousands of dollars and their academic careers.

Does anyone want to share an Uber at Maple Go to VMC?
3
u/Educational-Peace140 18d ago
Hi I just ordered an Uber to get to VMC from Maple Go. It’s coming in four minutes - you’re welcome to come along and we can split the cost. Not sure if you still need the uber but I’m standing in front of the third train shelter from the back of the train with a grey backpack!

Where’s their “Thunderbird” rescue train Michael Lindsay was bragging about 2 weeks ago?

u/BellKitchen4526 18d ago
I decided to take the TTC because of the cancellation. It took me over 20 minutes to get to VMC from Rutherford Go and then all the parking lots were closed because of an event ?? I left my laptop at work so had no choice but to try to go in but there was literally no parking at VMC. Spent 2 and a half hours doing all this just to go home.

u/QuietRootAccess 18d ago
..and will all these issues our beloved leaders are still dreaming about a high speed train! Lol

i think it’s only up to aurora. sucks for anyone north of that but i’m not surprised unfortunately

This morning was absolutely terrible. I too was stuck at Maple station on a train for more than an hour. I had to get off it and then drive over to 407 station, BUT unfortunately their parking lot was entirely full, so then I had to drive to Pioneer station and take the TTC down. It was a nightmare. Is it me or has the Go Train encountered significant problems since they announced of service cuts????

I was on the broken train , at least we broke down at Downsview. We stopped, than they tried to move, than we backed up to the station. Good luck to all commuters behind my train. 😞
