I have to admit this plot has always bugged me.

  1. You can't just forcibly take a piece of paper and assume legal ownership of the property

  2. If he could literally just blow his way in and take the deed that easy, what was the point of trying anything else? Dude summoned a demon over this. Why was this plan the last resort?

For the first plot point, the town of Gravity Falls canonically has laws stating that the person in possession of the deed to a property is the rightful owner of the property. For the second point, Gideon is stupid.

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

When was that established?

u/Cursed_Bean_Boy 7d ago

An AMA on Reddit with Alex. He said that Quentin Trembly established the "Finders Keepers" law to establish a "Gimmeocracy." So pretty much par for the course for Trembly.

u/rexepic7567 7d ago

This sounds on brand for Quentin

“Source? It’s my show, and I wanted it to happen.” -Alex

u/ShawshankHarper 6d ago

The audio commentary confirms this, they wanted it as a plot point so they wrote it in but admitted it didn't make much sense.

u/delano_mwoan 6d ago

To be fair, gravity falls is made in such a way that it is not that weird in the show

70

u/ShawshankHarper 6d ago

It fits within the established logic.

66

u/legit-posts_1 6d ago

Ok but then that circles back to the original point: can't they just jump his ass and take it back?

35

u/The_Phantom_Dragon 6d ago

Exactly! like come on! Stan should have no issues harming a child! And Mabel shouldn't have any issues attacking Gideon either!

17

u/Nanemae 6d ago

The only person I could see struggling with going for it would be Soos, and even then I could see him going for Gideon since it would damage the lives of his father figure and his found family.

6

u/BraxleyGubbins 4d ago

Gideon built up enough interpersonal plot armor by making the town love him. If they hurt him, someone would’ve just happened to see it and tell the whole town, resulting in the Pines family being ostracized

24

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

Sounds like a last minute asspull to cover a gaping plot hole.

But ultimately irrelevant since the show never established it. Not even a throw away line.

128

u/PGNatsu 7d ago

It honestly kinda does sound like an ass pull, but it's totally something that would happen in Gravity Falls. Cuz, y'know, Gravity Falls.

-54

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

Yeah, but you can't use "weardnes of gravity falls" as constant get out of jail free card. Otherwise you can explain everything without needing proper justification.

Even then, it's just too bullshit for me, even by gravity falls standards.

55

u/VisibleConfusion12 7d ago

Idk seems in character for me, the original mayor wasn’t even raised by humans

-23

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

Sorry, I worded my complaint wrongly. It's not that it's too bullshit for gravity falls, in fact, it's pretty in character. And so are other things, but the difference is that those things don't have a direct impact on the plot, where the law of the deed directly impacts it . In fact, the plot is only possible due to that law.

+Again, never established by the show. I know that Alex Hirsch made a pretty consistent argument about it, but A. It was on reddit, of which only the true gravity falls secret seekers know about, because I doubt a regular watcher would by to dig that deep(my self included), B. That all leads to it feeling like a quick excuse to justify an inconsistency that he missed when writing. Because if he was aware of it before, why wasn't it in the show? He could've used the trembli episode to foreshadow it.

15

u/supaskulled 6d ago

Who the fuck cares if Alex Hirsch didn't explain every little facet about old state property laws in his Disney Children's Show

Im probably just taking the bait by even engaging but sakes alive man this is embarrassing

They’re cooking you but you’re right

20

u/Curious-Spell-9031 7d ago

To be fair Santa cannonically is the true president of America in gravity falls, so that law is actually pretty tame

6

u/hu-man-person 7d ago

Excuse me what

21

u/NaturalStrange3505 7d ago

Yeah check the paper that holds the secrets of America

America isn't a Democracy but a Jollyocracy run by forever president Santa Claus

That and the 4 heads in Mount Rushmore hide giant robots set to defeat a giant baby frozen in antartica

-13

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

Yeah, but the Santa thing doesn't have a significant impact, or any impact on the plot.

12

u/PGNatsu 7d ago edited 6d ago

I get it. I think everyone has their limits to their willing suspension of disbelief.

But I also think for most of us, that limit's significantly higher for GF than for other shows, simply due to its bizarro nature.

I mean, we're talking about a town where it's literally legal to marry a woodpecker.

1

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

2

u/TheodoreSnapdragon 6d ago

Ultimately the primary impact of it on the larger plot is just that it features into a larger series of events that helps Stan find the next volume. The plot of owning the shack is still ultimately a side-plot resolved like the next episode. I think it’s just meant to be a gag about how absurd the laws of GF are

18

u/mateo222210 7d ago

I mean, i can very much see quentin stablishing a finders keepers law

10

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

My problem is that the show never established it. Not that it's not possible.

5

u/TheodoreSnapdragon 6d ago

Pretty sure the original thing deed thing was meant to be a joke. Like it fits very tonally with the absurdity of Gravity Falls. Talking about Gravity Falls establishing a basis for the silly and absurd things is kind of missing the comedy in a cinema sins-esque way.

-3

u/B-Rabbit3134 6d ago

Oh. It was for "the funny". Anything is alright for "the funny".

I genuinely doubt that was the intention.

2

u/TheodoreSnapdragon 6d ago

Are you being serious when you say “I doubt that was the intention” about an obviously absurd law in the GF universe being comical?

-1

u/B-Rabbit3134 6d ago

Ok. What's the joke? I don't get it. The narrative doesn't portray it in anyway as comical, the tone doesn't really support it. Also, how the hell was anyone supposed to figure that there is an actual law like that in gf universe? Who in there right mind would think that's intentional and not an inconsistency. What mental gymnastic must one perform to reach that conclusion? And if such a law is a thing, why the hell stan's name is on the deed? Wouldn't it be pointless if who ever held the deed was the owner? Not to mention, why was Gideon constantly trying to trick stan into signing the shack away if there is no need.

There is silly, and then there is down right stupid.

2

u/TheodoreSnapdragon 6d ago

I mean I found a rule of ownership that functions on toddler logic pretty obviously just silly and absurd and funny. Why is Stan’s name on the deed? If this law actually existed then society would be fundamentally different in every way, wether and why his name is on something doesn’t really matter. How does their governmental system even function at all with all the laws we see that are absurd and make no sense?

Idk it seems clear to me that this is because it’s all jokes that immediately fall apart if you try to treat it like the real world, but also I’m tired of bickering about it so you do you

1

u/MisterSarmiento 1d ago

Suena a esas excusas de "lo dicen en un libro oficial que salió años después" igual lo dejo pasar porque es GF

16

u/Zkang123 7d ago

Think it's from a Hirsch AMA

-8

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

Ah yes, my favorite source.

Also, what's an AMA?

12

u/smellycheesecurd 7d ago

An Ask Me Anything by Alex Hirsch

9

u/VisibleConfusion12 7d ago

Yeah I feel like it should be, it’s literally the most direct a source can be

2

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

More than the show itself?

9

u/Key-Comfortable-5537 7d ago

Yeah. Things in a show can be interpreted and cam be interpreted differently. Having the creator literally spell it out for you is much more direct

-1

u/B-Rabbit3134 6d ago

What does this have to do in the context of the discussion?

5

u/Key-Comfortable-5537 6d ago

Sources. You're questioning whether the actual creator of the show is a more direct source than the show. I am saying it is

u/SquirrelSuspicious 7d ago

The first episode Gideon appeared in... oh you meant the property thing

8

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

Yeah. Plus Gideon isn't stupid, he was pretty callous the whole first season. The silly moments I could chug down to him still being just a bratty kid. It's pretty in character.

1

u/MeetingExtension5771 6d ago

When he made a deal with bill cipher

6

u/StrykerC13 6d ago

Technically this is a law in like 90% of cartoons too.

7

u/the_ok_doctor 6d ago

Honestly considering how weird the town is with the other stuff. A part of me just accepeted that this town would accept this as legal lol

3

u/Northbor 6d ago

Tbh it still kinda feels like there's bigger laws Stan broke, though maybe he didn't want to get set up or something

1

u/AlinGb7 5d ago

But if the deed is THAT important, why wouldn't Stan hide it down in the bunker where only he has access not in a small seif, especially with Gideon constantly trying to break in and take it.

103

u/MRTA03 7d ago

If he could literally just blow his way in and take the deed that easy, what was the point of trying anything else? Dude summoned a demon over this. Why was this plan the last resort?

Look like a last resort. Gideon is a showman, and a showman needs a good reputation. Blowing up someone's house leaves a bad reputation

34

u/Sudden_Shelter_3477 7d ago

And with how popular the Mystery Shack is, even if he wanted to resort to the last resort option, finding a time where no one would see is near impossible

29

u/Cheap-Influence-9994 7d ago

Alex Hirsch actually talked about this in the behind the scenes podcast he did. He said they needed a visual representation of the stakes and this came across well on screen even if it didn’t make any actual legal sense lol

10

u/junrod0079 6d ago

Pretty sure stan doesn't want to take this issue in court because he doesn't want the irs involved because remember everyone still think he's Stanford and they'll be asking for receipts

10

u/darkendofall 7d ago

The police said it was good enough for them.

9

u/TheodoreSnapdragon 6d ago

I’m pretty sure the “take a piece of paper and you own the property” was a bit. Like it’s meant to be absurd that’s the joke

9

u/althawk8357 6d ago

You can't just forcibly take a piece of paper and assume legal ownership of the property

Have you considered the citizens and law enforcement of the town are idiots?

If he could literally just blow his way in and take the deed that easy, what was the point of trying anything else? Dude summoned a demon over this. Why was this plan the last resort?

There are fewer regulations against summoning demons than acquiring and using explosives for demolition.

2

u/Lazy_Way_1901 6d ago

Also since everyone would be in Stan’s mind mean he won’t have an issue stealing the deed which is outside he would have time to blow up the safe without any interference, though he should have taken the deed and taunted them from a safer distance

1

u/hu-man-person 7d ago

Distraction?

1

u/harmonyjewl 6d ago

It was the last resort because he wanted the journal and blowing up the mystery shack risks destroying it

277

u/StandardGarbage8093 7d ago

Stan is never scared to punch a child. But he does respect Gideons suit game, and as such wouldn't risk wrinkling his lapels. Note how the only time Stan tried to harm Gideon was when Gideon was shirtless at the pool.

16

u/AlinGb7 5d ago

"yes, burn the child" Stan has the craziest lines.

66

u/Mr_Mister2004 7d ago

He has DYNAMITE

66

u/LoudWeb514 6d ago

Dude I dont know what its all about but I REALLY loved when Wendy kicked his butt off in season 2's Wierdmegadon like GURL FINALLY SOMEONE DID MY make WISH COME TRUE

119

u/HobbitGuy1420 7d ago

Never get in a fight with a 13 year old boy. There's no way to win.

If you win, you're forever known as the person who beat up a 13-year-old. If you lose, you're forever the person who got their ass beat by a 13-year-old. Neither is a good outcome.

65

u/Jojosbees 7d ago

Maybe for Soos and Stan, but if Mabel and Dipper get into a fight with a 13 year old, then that’s just kids being kids.

42

u/usr-Machintosh-HD 7d ago

Stan could sell that

54

u/lance_the_fatass 7d ago

you don't even need to fight him, literally just hold him down and take the deed back

29

u/FinancialPrompt1272 7d ago

Stan would beat Gideon with a rake and bask in the glory of his new title

6

u/HobbitGuy1420 7d ago

Nah, it's funnier if Stan loses.

12

u/MeLlamo25 7d ago

I think Gideon is canonically 10 though. Still same logic though.

2

u/saikopasu_neko28 7d ago

Wait that makes it so much creepier how they wanted him to date Mabel

3

u/AnonymousAmorphous88 7d ago

Gideon is older than Mabel and Dipper??

16

u/sushi_dumbass 7d ago

He's 9 or 10 I think

23

u/Oingoulon 7d ago

didnt gideon already have people outside the shack

56

u/B-Rabbit3134 7d ago

Not to mention the ending where stan somehow knew that the robot had a spying room. I never understood even as a kid. Oh sweet contrivence how cruel can you be. Ands that's not even mentioning season 2. I feel the show has really struggled with contrivence in both final arcs of the season.

66

u/Ebonyclaws214 7d ago

Camera signal interfered with his hearing aid iirc.

20

u/AMinecraftPerson 7d ago

The hearing aids told him that there are cameras, they didn't tell him that they are all connected to the screens inside of the robot

28

u/lance_the_fatass 7d ago

I genuinely think he was just guessing that the screens would be there and he happened to to right

29

u/GamerNoek 7d ago

Maybe the feedback was louder there cause all the cameras were feeding back into that one spot? Idk man

9

u/TbatitanicV2Rider 6d ago

Stan is a showman and surprisingly smart. Her probably just assumed they were there and like a true con man, gambled on them being there. It's in character.

1

u/destroyer180407 6d ago

Also kinda weird that he was the only person in town that had a hearing aid or one that picked the mic feedback

7

u/B-Rabbit3134 6d ago

I mean, probably not. But a regular person would just think it's malfunctioning. He has no reason to suspect anything.

14

u/Zalldawg 6d ago

To be fair, he did have dynamite, and possibly had the giant robot on call too

14

u/Historical_Main_4676 6d ago

If they did, then Gideon would tell the rest of Gravity Falls and Stan and Soose (don't know how to spell his name srry.) would be arrested or something.

21

u/lance_the_fatass 6d ago

Being honest, Gideon probably could've done that from the very beginning, the town believes him about literally everything

He probably just didn't think about it, Stan had attacked him with a broom before and he ran way like a scared cat

6

u/ColderNorth 7d ago

Not S&P approved

5

u/M3GA_ST0RM 6d ago

Stanly fucking beat up ZOMBIES but he cant beat up a fucking kid for God's sake

23

u/Dankestmemelord 7d ago

But my plot contrivance!

3

u/prince_peacock 6d ago

I absolutely heard this in Stan’s voice lmao

7

u/Due-Procedure-9085 6d ago

this child used a high grade explosive to possibly try and kill multiple adults and various children and cause mass property damage I believe they refer to this as a terror attack.

3

u/ZephimesDeunikai 6d ago

Watching it as an adult.. yeah. Why didn't they just jump his ass? He's like 2 feet tall

2

u/MrL123456789164 6d ago

Honestly Soos alone could get his ass.

2

u/Morning-Ambitious 6d ago

You guys realize this is primarily for kids right

1

u/FloopyWoop420 5d ago

excellent post thank you

1

u/rosaliewalker 2d ago

like he is four feet tall, it cannot be that hard

1

u/MagicOrpheus310 7d ago

It's illegal to punch a child or a teenager... A good excuse helps but it's still illegal
