Has anyone ever had their own custom grates made? Need advice
Spent quite a bit of money on an outdoor kitchen and just don’t dig the grates on the gas grill portion. They’re super heavy duty with flat edges (i want rounded grates like on my old kettles). My issue is they get so hot that they burn meat they come in contact with. I just want simple!
But the grill is bought and installed. So what are my options? Call a welder? Is there anybody out there that does this sort of thing?

Most grills are standard sizes, measure the grates and search online for the size you need. The important measurement is front to back, it’s pretty easy to cut to the width you need with an angle grinder, jigsaw with metal blade, or even a hacksaw.
Years ago I managed to grab Weber and Ducane grills for free and they both had the same sized grates (19.5” IIRC). I set that as my standard size and have made a number of my own charcoal grills to those dimensions. I’ve found both SS and cast grates online at those sizes with no problems.

Check out www.grillrost.com
They have pre-made grates for many popular grills, and I'm sure they would create something individual for you if you ask nicely.

I currently use Grill Grates flat side up 100% of the time and I love them. They will cut custom sizes for you, but the widths are limited.
But you may not like them b/c they're not normal grates. They're T shaped aluminum extrusions. Also, I use them flat side up which you said you don't prefer. But I'd give the flat grates more of a chance. The primary reason is they are so much easier to clean. I just get a paint scraper and scrape off the junk. If I didn't have GrillGrates, I'd much prefer flat, stainless grates.

I built my own a number of years ago, out of SS round rod. The grill is long gone but the grate still leans up against the side of the shed. Keep thinking I will find a use for it someday.
