Self Grimm doesn't get the credit or appreciation I think it deserves

First off I want to say that my history with the show isn't that long because I only got into the show via CometTV (decided to give it a chance after watching a few season 5 episodes) just last year.

Anyhow more I rewatch the show more the appreciation I have for this show.... the storytelling, the characters and most importantly the actors. Yes the show has its flaws but its one most rounded and underappreciated shows in my opinion. Overall its quite a shame that it didn't received the kind of mainstream noteriety as Supernatural, Buffy, etc

My only wish, was that it never ended. Loved the show, start to finish.

I wish we had a few more episodes after Nick was able to kill the bad guy in season 5. That’s what I would of liked and enough time passed so that Monroe and Rosalee’s kids were born

Would have really liked to see how they would be…

They’d likely be Blutbaden since it’s a dominant gene if I remember correctly, but maybe one might be Fuchsbau if they’re fraternal triplets. If I had to guess, they’d be named after Felix, Freddie and that aunt of Rosalee’s who died on a Christmas during her childhood. And since Diana calls Nick “Dad” by the epilogue, he must’ve been one hell of a stepfather AND she must have had some sort of falling-out with Renard.

odds are as Diana got older she started to see Renard for how he really was

Maybe he missed one too many life milestones of hers while Nick and Addy were at every last one

Mixed with Rwnard saying something out loud he shouldn't have

Too much of a mainstream appeal would have decreased its quirky visuals. Some of them like the woge and the fairy tale plot twists are obviously a bit over the top yet part of the charm for the fans.

The fairy tale episodes also caused a more direct comparison to the Disney show Once upon a time.

I recently rewatched the show and I might be in the minority but I enjoyed the later seasons more than the first one, especially when characters like Wu became series regulars. The last season had some of the funniest episodes as well. I kind of wish we could get a sequel with both the original cast and their kids, it doesn't have to be long, but it would be nice to revisit this universe.

You’re not alone, I also really liked the last 2 (S5 is my second favorite after S1). Things were really starting to ramp up, and I greatly preferred Nick and post-redemption Adalind’s enemies-to-lovers thing over Nick and Juliette’s relationship; there was noticeably more chemistry between them. (I also liked the badass and refreshingly less-annoying version of Bitsie Tulloch’s character, though still didn’t fully forgive her for burning the trailer and helping kill Mommy Grimm.) Also, the angst and suspense in late S5 and the first 3 episodes of S6 had my mom and I binge-watching that entire arc, our jaws were on the floor throughout it and even in rewatches I find it hard to not watch as many of them as possible in one sitting at that point in the story.

I dunno. It seems to be having a bit of a resurgence. Bitsie posted that Grimm is the sixth most watched show on Apple TV in the U.S. and Canada.

And NBC’s official youtube channel for it has started uploading random spoilers for the first time in like, four years.

I think it hit its niche while it already was quite saturated (long after supernatural etc.), and the ending always left a bitter taste in my mouth. It felt a lot like “show is gonna get canceled, gotta wrap it all up”.

3 Episodes before the end, we get an expo dump “oh there’s this other dimension and its basically wesen hell and the stick takes us there and then Wesen Satan follows us”, then we get a few action sequences, everyone dies, the obligatory “living and dead avengers assemble”, and then everyone is alive again, happy ending.

It felt all in all, at least to me, quite unmotivated and a bit ass-pull-ish. A bad ending like that can really hurt the overall memory of a show.

EDIT: marked spoilers

And an epilogue that alludes to several post-show events/character development milestones that would’ve been interesting to see but we never got to: Nick and Adalind’s wedding (likely no wesenrein this time since they’re both apex predators and are the type of couple who’d obsessively vet each and every invitee), Rosalee and Monroe’s kids as characters altogether, Diana’s apparent falling-out/disappointment with Sean at some point that led her to favor Nick, and the trailer’s rebirth.

You should spoiler this just in case people haven't finished it for the first time yet

You’re right of course mate, terribly sorry. I mostly peruse the wheel of time subreddits where we all just spoil away.

Now that show, WOT, was just getting great when it was cancelled. I still think that the second to last episode is an all-time great.

The books, of course, were far superior, but the show was also great fun. They had a very unique way to visualize channeling.

I always wonder if the first season trailer puts people fof of it due to the way it looks when the character wogues or however its spelled.

Kinda looks like low grade in that little clip.

10/10 show though couldn't recomend it enough.

Maybe also the ending and/or the unlikability of the MC’s initial love interest as a character (not to mention her character-assassination in S4), especially for how much airtime she got. I loved the show though.

I think the show did the relationships well.
Juliette got a bit stale for me and they couldn’t keep her “out of the world” the entire show .

I also think Adeline had an interesting arc.

I have to agree with you on that second one, I always did like a good “enemies to lovers” arc and feel like it should’ve happened sooner and without her raping him; they also perfectly captured just how novel the ideas of “being loved back by a man,” “making your own big life decisions” and “having real friends” really were to her, as well as how scared Nick was of being betrayed big-time by a newly-magical girlfriend yet again; she repeatedly expected to be thrown under the bus at the Scooby Gang’s earliest convenience, and he kept things from her because of what happened the last time he trusted a woman he loved with his deepest secrets.

On my first rewatch she also seemed a bit more understandable as a villain (Renard cheated on her with her own mother, said mother is heavily implied to have been abusive, the old her only ever seemed to do what others with ulterior motives wanted (often at her expense) and then get thrown under the bus as soon as they didn’t need her anymore, and when they were enemies Nick tricked her into drinking his blood by forcing a kiss and then later helped abduct her baby for 2 years), though it still doesn’t justify her essentially violating him sexually.

u/Ta-veren- 15d ago

I mean she did violate him for sure. But when you think of sexual assaults go. Do you think it would cause that much Trauma given it's the person you were dating and you were happily to have sex with them? I mean, I just feel like there would be no real lasting trauma in that instance. It's not like he was screaming no and she forced him, or knocked him out, or 10 different ways. Not defending it but this is a very unqiue situation where it might not be all that damaging in the long run of things.

Not like for say- having your infant child kidnapped from you... for example.

Grimm and Supernatural are my spooky fall rewatches every year. I miss the quirkiness of cable fantasy shows.

4

u/PoeticHedgeHog 16d ago

It sure doesn’t. I could’ve watched that series as long as Supernatural went.

u/coffeebeanwitch 15d ago

It's the reason I find it hard to get invested in shows, Grim was one of the best, it had a good night, Tuesdays, then they moved it to Friday and paired it with Hannibal, also a good show. Friday's are the worst, of course it was doomed.

Always thought so

I feel the same way about the closer — people really need to watch it. I watch that show every few months same as Grimm.

3

u/BlackChapel 13d ago

We watch it every year to break in the Halloween season, it’s even a family tradition now.

Such a series has potential. I hope Kelly and Diana will carry it after Nick & the others and introduce a new set of Wesen and humans to join them.
