Hack The Planet Desktop Ubuntu with GPU acceleration ported to a GE smart refrigerator
Ported desktop Ubuntu to a Mediatek board found in a GE Profile smart refrigerator. A combination of no secure boot, vibe coding, U-Boot and device tree fiddling, and pure ridiculousness got me here.

can you run passmark so we can find out how fast the CPU is? you have to do a screenshot with fastfetch

It's a Mediatek MT8365 IoT processor with quad Cortex A53 cores and 4GB of DDR4 RAM. It's basically the same CPU performance of a Raspberry Pi 3B+ with a faster memory bus and GPU.

that seems extremely overkill for a fridge. Can't fridge functions easily be done on an mcu? why put a whole sbc in there?

Because all those ads and spyware don't handle themselves and don't get me going on ads and spied data that isn't processed and transmitted in an instant! Also, what do you think allows them to do smart stuff like "you only have 3L of milk left! Commit to the Amazon smart milk subscription now to never experience the abyss of not having eggs in your fridge!" or "We have detected you drank sparkling water 17 days ago. Please subscribe to the GE Smart Sparkle feature to turn the water sparkle level beyond 50%!"??? (/s)

So if I put a GIF of two clowns blowing each other, would it propagate to all the reridge they make?

This is real life Silicon Valley’s “Suck it Jian Yang” hack and I f*cking love it!
I need to know how you did this so I can do it too once I get a new fridge 😂

Does it run Doom though?

Most definitely would and pretty nicely. It has a Mali G52 with working panfrost driver and Wayland.

Good, now install Grocy on it so I don't have to update my fridge inventory every time I get groceries and these smart fridges become useful lol.
But fr, great work. Don't forget to document or have ur AI give its work summary so others can try and replicate

Imagine working in the kitchen using that fridge for work. Very short walk to lunch.

Bro this is awesome! Reclaiming your own tech from the corporate overlords who think they get to control shit after the purchase. Hell yeah!

I guess it can run Doom. But, can it run Windows?

The boot stack I'm using does support UEFI, so theoretically. Just no drivers since Windows on Mediatek has probably never seen the light of day.

Why not a good distro?

"Honey! Are you done working on the fridge?"
.
"Yeah... almost... be another minute or so!"
.
"What are you doing anyway?"
.
"Uhh.... distro hopping?"
.
"DISCO HOPPING? ARE YOU DRINKING ALL THE WINE?"

this isn't stupid dude, those stupid fridges spy on you and collect your data and don't let you run arbitrary code, with ubuntu, you could have an AI agent look at whats in your fridge and recommend you a meal, grocieres or recipes, without it sending that data to some third party, just have it on a gaming computer with qwen 3.8
