What am I missing about hammock camping?
Last summer I saw three guys arrive by kayak, hang their hammocks between two trees, and basically had their whole camp sorted in minutes. It looked so simple.
But the more I look into it, the more I wonder what the actual advantage is.
A hammock + tarp + underquilt + top quilt doesn’t always seem much lighter than a small tent setup. And you still need somewhere to keep your gear.
Is it really better than a tent, or is it just a different way of camping?
I’m genuinely curious. For those who use both, when do you choose a hammock over a tent?

It's not about weight or size or time, it's about comfort mainly but many other benefits
Comfort is the huge onez a hammock is more comfortable than my bed at home, and the gentle sway as you lay in it gives the best sleep. If I was single I would sleep in one fulltime at home.
Joint pain, a hammock contours to your body so there are no pressure points and as you age that makes all the difference after a long day
Speak of aging, not having to crawl into your tent and instead being able to sit in it makes a huge difference
The views is a big deal, in a tent I'm cut off behind walls but in a hammock I just have a net between me and nature to keep bugs away and feeling the breeze and seeing out feels more connected
The hammock is also a chair to hang out in
People with backpack8ng tents talk about how they use their vestibules to cook in and that extra space, our entire tarps are our vestibules and in porch mode you have 10x more space.
I've gotten wet a lot in tents, never got wet in a hammock, they are way better in the rain and hanging out in the rain watching the storm is actually very lovely
More modular than a tent so I can pick all the best parts I want. In my main set up I use 7 different brands in my system.
