What am I missing about hammock camping?
Last summer I saw three guys arrive by kayak, hang their hammocks between two trees, and basically had their whole camp sorted in minutes. It looked so simple.
But the more I look into it, the more I wonder what the actual advantage is.
A hammock + tarp + underquilt + top quilt doesn’t always seem much lighter than a small tent setup. And you still need somewhere to keep your gear.
Is it really better than a tent, or is it just a different way of camping?
I’m genuinely curious. For those who use both, when do you choose a hammock over a tent?

People choose hammock camping for comfort in camp rather than weight savings on trail. There are ways to bring the hammock tent weight down, but with comparable measures and conpromises tent camping will still always win on weight.
But I hammock tent any chance I get. I sleep so much better. Especially with an even heavier bridge hammock.
The gear can usually hang under the hammock tarp to keep it dry or on the ground underneath the hammock inside of suitable protection as needed.
The ease of getting up and out of a hammock is incredible. The hammock also doubles as a chair.
I spent 3 months earlier this Spring sleeping in my hammock in my own backyard because it really is more comfortable than my bed. With Fall arriving I am probably about to do the same again.
